I've got the i5 M60 Touring Ultimate, it's not exactly a head turner. Parked up in the car park it just looks like any other big BMW estate car if i'm honest. I think i can count on 1 hand (that's less than 5, i'm not from the 7 fingered part of Yorkshire...... :D ) the people who have come up to me to ask about the car in the nearly 2 years i've had it. He might want to rethink his choice if status is one of the criteria......
The i5 Touring is his perfect car.. he's an estate man through and through..

He isn't as bothered about image/status outside of work, and outwardly he'd say he doesn't care about image/status in work, but his actions belie his words.. In the same way all the Exec/C-Suite say they don't care about parking and who parks where and say we don't need any rules, but the moment you park in the wrong place you get an earful..

How long do EV batteries last if left unused? Say I left it a month before wanting to drive again?

The main battery will be fine just leave at %80 and all good. The 12v might be flat when you get back using a jump pack to start it might be needed or if you can use a trickle charger whilst away to keep it topped up.

Infrastructure, check your area

Assuming you can charge at home then public charging infrastructure in your area is completely irrelevant. I know there are at least 20 rapids with a couple of miles of me, but unsurprisingly I've never felt the need to spend 80p/kwh to charge on them when it costs me less than 10% of that at home.

The infrastructure in the entire rest of the country is what you need to be concerned with, and there are still some areas with insufficient provision.

Only a problem if you need to rely on public charging to survive, in which case EV ownership isn’t for you yet.

Only to those who haven’t tried living with an EV.

From someone who has been living with an EV for 7 years (barring a year or so during covid), range anxiety and slow charging times are still definitely an inconvenience (which isn't the same as an insurmountable problem).

While the vast majority of the time (for me at least), they're not a consideration, they do become a big one when planning longer journeys outside of the car's range, and if that's something you do regularly, then it can certainly be an additional cognitive overhead you could do without.

I've just come back from a 300 mile weekend, with no real convenient opportunity to destination charge (there are surprisingly few medium speed chargers in Reading), and I could have done without having to sit in the car-park of a golf club for 30 minutes with a bored 6 year old moaning in the back, when all I wanted to do was get home and go to bed after spending the whole weekend ferrying people around/sitting in a hospital.

Yes, the level of inconvenience is well below what many people who haven't driven an EV think.
Yes, the inconvenience is offset by the fact you don't have to go to a petrol station every week.

However, to claim there is no inconvenience at all and dismiss valid concerns instead of being realistic about it doesn't do any favours.

It's all very well telling people to "just buy XYZ car", but maybe their budget wont stretch to that?. A £5k ICE is significantly more capable for mixed use than a £5k EV, where you'll be lucky to have 100 miles range and be able to charge at > 50kwh. Perfect for a second car to pootle around town, not great for taking the kids on a day trip to the beach 100 miles away.

I actually get on with him really well..

The issue is, he's very motivated by image/status and as sad as it is, thinking about it, I really should have spotted this before hand..

I have to manage up equally as much as I manage down.. it's sad, but anyone thinking the basics of status don't exist within Exec teams is either very lucky or delusional.. ! :)
I don't understand why that would talk you out of getting the car you want tbh... unless the response from your boss was.... you ain't having it.... I would just get it and laugh it off with with him and tell him .... " you can say "I told you so" if it all goes wrong" .

Workplace dynamics are a weird and wonderful thing. Sometimes it just isn't worth rocking the boat.

Yep, I could easily force it through, but in this place getting on with the C-Suite and Exec Directors is very important, we are a very flat company and its better to pick your battles.. Its only a car..

Those of you on EDF is there some way that I need to pair the charger to my account like I did with Octopus? If not how does it work out the smart charge times? Is there anything else I need to set up (EV tariff went live today)?

All done though the EDF app, exactly the same sort of onboarding as octopus

I don't think Ohme is compatible for EDF smart control is it (I think only myenergi zappi and hypervolt are)?

You'll need to connect EDF to the car and leave the Ohme to be a dumb box I think if you want to set up smart control

That's the thing though, I can't find anything in the app to do with EV's or chargers. The OHME app still thinks I am with Octopus even though I have selected EDF as my supplier.

don't forget to sign up for flextras too https://www.edfenergy.com/flextras-rewards
Yep, just did that, four hours of free leccy, nice!!

@pastymuncher

once you sign up to smart charging you get a second screen on the app to set up the smart schedule
