EV general discussion

Very slightly, I am fixed at 6.66p per kWh with EDF, I was paying 6.77p per kWh on IOG but that was the variable not the fixed one. The peak rate is a hell of a hike over IOG's current price though. I can't see why I can't smart charge on EDF when I have been doing it for the past couple of years on Tomato and Octopus. Are EDF that much behind everyone else?

Ohme are an oddity because they want to run their own smart control and Octopus had to build a specific API to deal with them, others can't be bothered, is the long and short of it.

That's odd as EDF uses kraken as a backend
Perhaps an overly simplistic way of understanding it but my understanding was that Ohme directly uses Kraken itself to set it's own smart scheduling and tells Octopus what it's doing, rather than receiving instruction from Octopus' Kraken driven scheduling - Octopus were prepared to write a system to permit this to function, companies like EDF can't be bothered - they want to set the schedule and tell the charger what to do - maybe a slim chance of future integration.

The other companies like Ovo who use Kaluza are completely at odds with Ohme and so even less chance.

Still within the cooling off period aren't you? Doesn't that mean you can roll back to exactly where you were with octopus? Or do you need to move to one of their current tariff offerings that isn't as good?

I don't even know if that's like for like because EDF are showing the ex-VAT price now and Octopus still showing with VAT?

The peak rate is crazy on the 12m EDF which is why I haven't bitten the bullet yet. The 18m is more aligned and probably will be lower than Octopus after the Jan price rises happen but still crossing my fingers and hoping the mad orange **** makes peace with Iran soon so prices can go back towards normal instead of locking in at a super high price for 18m

Thanks for the link, unfortunately they don't support my car or my charger so I should have stuck with Octopus. This is turning into the worst switch I have ever done.
What is your goal? The one thing EDF offer is a simple off-peak timed slot that every car/charger should be able to use.. 7 hours off peak is a nice window..
You only 'need' a compatible car/charger if you join their smart charging option, that gives you £5 a month but needs one of them to be kraken compatible..

However, I agree that if you joined their v3 12m Go Electric fixed, its day rate is a bit high, I joined on the V2 Go Electric which will be 29p in October, still high enough, but I'm on solar/batteries so the 6.6p 7 hours off peak is a gold mine.

Just don't join the optional smart charging feature.. the basic Go Electric is just 7 hours overnight time based and they've not even asked me for proof.. ironically both my cars are Kraken compatible, but I haven't joined the smart charging yet, being heavily on solar/battery and predominantly charge at work, I don't have much use for it, but the £5 a month might be worth it..
Surely there's no downside? Free fiver, you still get your 7 hours and if you do happen to get an intelligent slot then extra cheap rate time.

That's more like it. What a gorgeous looking car.
I rather think, even though I agree it is good looking, that picture is an AE artists impression because the only official one I think is the teaser below:

you've got 2 weeks to switch back, but as you're on IOG variable, i would fully expect a rate hike in short order.

^ That's why I shifted, I don't fancy paying 8.40p per kWh for off peak.
have they confirmed the IOG variable price increase already? (8.5p/kwh was my guess)
honestly i would recommend the 18 month fix, the prices are a lot more palatable than the 12m fix

I think mebbe it's time I get serious about this EV malarkey.

Questions (@ICDP you're up :D)

(apologies, I'll be jpauling a bit here, any input / assistance appreciated):

Current car (2018 Mini Cooper):

18k miles p/a
42mpg
£1.75/l (best case scenario atm)

= £3400 p/a in fuel.

Average servicing costs:
£650 p/a

Insurance:
£300 p/a

Tax:
£200p/a

TCO P/A (not factoring in depreciation): £4550 p/a

Tesla model 3 RWD (Highland):

18k miles p/a
4.78 miles/kWh
price per kwh 43p

Servicing
£200

Insurance:
£515

Tax:
£200 p/a (assuming 2024 car)

Questions:
What's the average price we'll pay at a public charger per kwh? (my wife can charge at work, but that's being excluded from this for a worst case scenario)
For those of you that lease, what's included (tax, servicing, etc)?

As above, any assistance appreciated! Cheers chaps :)
