EV general discussion

I had to make a deal with the devil (she doesn't read this forum) in order to get my import STI, now I also need a sensible family car :D

Is there anything stand out that's making waves at the moment? the only requirement I personally have is I can get from Manchester to Essex in one go in winter. That's 220 miles ish.

I was thinking of
VW ID4
E 3008
Maybe a Q4 etron?

I guess used 20-25k is fine.

Or is it, is used EV a bad idea? I know nothing about them

We would need more info on your requirement but you clearly listed mostly mid sized SUV style EVs. Is that a red line requirement?

Oh and no, a used EV is not a bad idea. Just be sure to ask for a battery SoH check.

She definitely prefers a larger car yeah her favourite car we've had was the F-Pace, but I don't think it needs to be as massive as that.

The Mach-E also looks like decent value although it's older now I guess

Ahhh I knew they'd get you eventually, you were having way too few problems with that I-Pace! :D

I'd let the Tesla go and keep your cars unless you have no choice but to take the tesla?
the ipace has been (and still is) a joy to be honest and hasn't put a foot wrong. the 90% battery limit is a disgrace with no idea of a resolution but that isn't the cars fault and the truth it is is almost certain to be fine and it's just an over abundance of caution. taking the Tesla is kind of a "too cheap not too" (it's free) and as I am really serious about becoming a private hire driver having a 7 seater is a real advantage.

Free would be hard to turn down! What’s the range on the Tesla these days?

hard to say. my mate reckons around 165 miles in winter... but he has it on performance mode and drives a lot faster than I do. I am confident I will get higher. not gonna lie i will check out ludicrous mode but for the most part it will be on chill mode or what ever they call it.

Yay, more questions.

Firstly, I'm reading the odd report of 12v batteries dying. Is it worth me keeping a jump pack in the car?

Also, what mods / extras / quality of life bits can anyone suggest?

Cheers :)

Just like be the odd one out and I’ve just ordered a VW Tayron R Line Hybrid. Always had ICE so a just dipping my big toe in first. Needed something big with kids and a Golden Retriever on the horizon. Anyone ever had one?

you're buying a model 3 highland, no?
these don't have 12v batteries anymore...they use 16v li-ion batteries for their low voltage circuits.
these batteries are charged from the high-voltage (driving) battery so there is no need for a jump pack

first of all, are you leasing the car or are you buying it outright?

the two biggest quality of life mods that i can recommend are the drivers display and the swivel mechanism for the main screen
these are easily fitted (and also easily removed without damaging the car's interior if you are leasing)
another easy mod is the boot light mod
teslas are pretty easy to mod, but the rest i wouldn't really recommend unless you buy the car outright - such as tinting the rear windscreen and rear passenger windows (unlike most "premium" cars and the model y, the model 3 do not have tinted rears...which is a bit silly, but alas)

driver's display and swivel mount:

boot light "upgrade" mod:

mods i won't bother with, if the car is leased:
My weekly AliBaba mod for my Model 3

Just so my Model 3 looks less like a rep-mobile...

You don’t need a jump pack IMO, massive overkill in any modern car frankly.

The car flags if the 12V is weak before it is a problem.

Modern (from 2022) Tesla’s don’t even have a lead acid 12V battery. It will have a ~16v lithium low voltage battery.

Sure some old Model S and X cars have had issues with not flagging expiring 12V batteries but from what I can see that is generally a thing of the past.

What you don’t have is a spare tyre so make sure you have decent break down cover.

If you don’t want to wait for recovery if you get a puncture, consider a tyre inflator and a plug kit.

Fortunately I've never needed it yet myself but something I'd rather have and not need than need and not have. If a battery is on its last legs or you accidentally leave the car with stuff running (though most modern cars try to prevent that) you might not have a warning - sometimes car batteries will show fine on diagnostics until the first bit of cold weather and then struggle.

I have however used mine to help colleagues out at work several times on a range of old to new cars.

Cheers chaps.

I've got a jump pack that's quite small, I'll just leave it in the car anyway. That said, I think the longest one of our cars has gone without being used is three weeks when we were in Oz.

That drivers screen looks ace, cheers @tamzzy
