EV general discussion

Routing is based on pre set journeys where you have decided to charge based on its recommendation rather than doing it live. Apple maps does that better or even my car as the car knows SoC and it knows I want to recharge at 20%. The data you can get from devices you are near is okay and see comments but it’s too late really then to react to changing your plan. Felt too many layers in the UI.

Do 3rd party apps have anyway to get the cars SOC -
this was one of engineering explained guys critiques of Model 3 in his multi day winter trip, where it wasn't optmising stops for faster lower soc charge,
or (multi-day) recharging when battery warmer at end of day.

yes. As mention APBP, I think it need to link to Tronity, I like the way it logs charging events and miles on ODO. My Ohme charger also uses the Jaguar API to know this, aswell as a 3rd party iOS app called MyPace…

so this just highlights more reason why Zap-Map doesn’t cut the mustard. That said it’s cheap than ABRP premium which is what you need for CarPlay.

So with the Mrs picking up her first EV next weekend we talked about charging when on holiday/extended trips, using zap-maps to find all the charging points.

We weren't sure that if a Pub/Hotel showing multiple chargers are OK to use even if not a customer of the hotel/pub (assuming paid for charging of course)? Or are those really reserved for customers etc?

They'll be public use and you'll pay to use them there.

info tab on Zap-Map should make any restrictions clear.

It's the 'public' use part I think is always not so clear on zap-maps.

Thanks, I find Zap-Maps is a bit vague as a noob.. plenty of chargers filtered as public access but are in hotel carparks and just checking the one up the road from me, it doesn't mention restrictions yet has a sign on the wall saying it's for patrons only..

I keep jumping between but just prefer checkin style of zap map. Plugshare shows ones being built too which is cool, if frustrating when they are near.

So what about 7.4KW home chargers?

I've been going down the path of the most popular/well reviewed units, currently that seems to be the Zappi or Hypervolt..

However, I'm not sure on how 'smart' I need a charger, I think I need
- Load sharing (I have a 45Amp electric shower, 30A induction hob, so with 30A charging, so 105A overall!!)
- Basic monitoring - would be good to see the usage over time etc, just to isolate it's usage from the rest of the house, so some form of connectivity
- Work with any EV - The Mrs' ID.3 initially, but will have other guests occasionally

Other than that, in terms of scheduling and other charging options, is it best left to the car itself, I know the ID.3 can schedule and you can set the charge amount (i.e. Charge to 80% for example), or is that generally unreliable and scheduling is best done by the charger??

Also, I wouldn't mind something smallish and unobtrusive since I can't hide it down the side of a wall it'll be on the main front house wall..

Any recommendations?

Not sure if new OHME home pro has load balancing. The Wallbox unit has the power boost options (which does the exact opposite of its name). Zappi as mentioned is as option.

if you only charge overnight it shouldn’t be a concern.

Thanks! A good shout on the Ohme Home Pro, the blurb mentions "Home Power Balancing", I'll take a further look..

Of course the unit looks nice, but how to neatly store the tethered lead !

Really wrestling with this at the moment. Wife is expecting another baby and the current car she has barely works for our current little one, nevermind another.

Been looking at EVs and really uhming and ahring about the Model 3. Because Tesla but also as we're getting solar panels installed so free charging during day. Apart from the Leaf, I can't really see any other options out there for around the same price point. It seems to take rear facing baby seats well enough.

Anyone with a Tesla Model 3 wants to chime in and speak about the merits of it as a family car? Supermarket runs during the week, kindy drop off and trips to the gym. Maybe a bit longer drives during the weekend.

In my mind it's a weekend YOLO car made to go really fast and parked in the garage for most of the week.

see my post in the Tesla thread - answered you there

Rolec charger here - it is a "smart" one but NEVER used any of the functions or smart features. Plug in, charge car - that's it. Never really understood the whole smart features requirement - just plug in when you need to, don't when you don't.

No issues with everything else in house.

Rolec had a bad name 4/5 years ago but mine's been fine for 2 years now

I totally agree that a higher speed limit for Evs would help achieve faster adoption

Wouldn't it be nice if people adopted EV because it was genuinely better rather than because ICE was made artificially awful through speed restrictions and EV made better through tax breaks.

EV's are apparently the best cars ever, so why do we need to make the alternatives awful to get people to move?
