EV general discussion

Any news if they will do an estate version? A section of the market sorely lacking in choice for EVs!

Yup! The MG5 facelift looks like it'll make it a worthy choice (adding things like LED headlights etc), and hopefully it can get true one-pedal driving, but is only coming to the UK later next year - EU gets it this year as far as the rumours say. Everything else is geared towards the crossover/SUV market; can't wait to see some more "ordinary" estates appear.

Japan have admitted they cannot get the EV infrastructure in place.
It will cost too much money, plus only moves the pollution elsewhere.
Your driving a pipe dream folks.

It’s only working because you are the minority.

So you've gone from "EV is partly the solution" to "EV isn't the answer at all and provides 0% solution" I bet your FB rants are class. Tell me, which groups are you in?

EQS looks horrendous.

For sure its no looker but the shape is functional so I can forgive that. I think it looks better in solid colours as well, I dont like the two tone paint at all, will have to see what it looks like for real to gauge how it looks.

edit: the EQS AMG in black actually looks ok and is a slight improvement. It’s still no looker but doesn’t look so bad

At least the dash doesn't look like someone suddenly realised at the last minute they'd forgotten to stick the screen in.

I hadn't appreciated this (De anyway)

For plug-in hybrids, the all-electric minimum range will increase from the current 40km to 60km for vehicle purchases from 1 January 2022. Although eligibility will still apply if a maximum of 50g of CO2 emissions per 100km is achieved, there are vehicles that currently exceed this CO2 emission while still managing the currently valid 40km range.
which explain the new battery size in new Merc C series

so that will be a discontinuity, for used values.
article with some data discussing ev life cycle depreciation(versus just first 3 years) in the face of new model with better range/tech
I hadn't realised e-golf suffered a shock on release of ID3

New, initially, phev Astra deisgn (stellaris platform) looks like the pretty sister of the ioniq 5, similar mouth, integrated wheel arches, ....
nice integrated dash arrangement, manufacturers are managing to plot a beeter course between a spartan tablet and ICE
all-new Opel Astra REVIEW Vauxhall Astra 2022 Ultimate vs GS-Line

thought the latest ix3 advert is rubbish - do they think the banality of an alexa integration should be the focal point of the car,
nissan had been doing similar adverts just pushing the connectedness of their cars

For a lot of people how many usb ports and whether the car has bluetooth are the major factors for them when deciding what car to drive. Elon musk is right. — hes just about 30-50 years too soon. Most people dont wanna drive driving is something they have to do. Sooner or later cars will drive people. Just look at all the idiots about these days that cant put their phone down for any amount of time while driving.

I really enjoy driving, although other drivers are starting to make that statement apply less and less of the time, but there are often times I wish for a car that can just get me where I need to go without me having to actually drive it.

Returning back to the original question of when I'll be going electric... My company keeps its company cars for an annoyingly long time so I was planning to push for an EV when the time comes (2 or 3 years at a guess). Unless there is a big phase shift in charging infrastructure though I think I'll try and get a plug-in hybrid instead next time round.

Every time I think about whether an EV could work for me I come back to the issue of destination charging. The range of current EVs is about where I would need it to be for work use BUT I need to be confident that whatever hotel I end up in has the guarantee that a charger will be available to have the car at 100% for the following day and that feels like a long way off.

I also need to be sure that whatever charging is available doesn't leave me out of pocket in terms of mileage expenses, again this is too varied at the moment. BIK benefits will be phased out so I will need to ensure business miles don't eat into my pay each month.

The only reason our second car won't be going EV anytime soon is purely economic. It does just a few thousand miles a year, cost us nothing (wife's mother gifted her old one to her when she upgraded), I can do the bulk of the servicing on it myself and it has a realistic 7 or so years life in it at least.

One of the issues for me - the range itself is getting there and covers most of my day to day journeys but when I look at some of the longer trips I do time to time charging becomes a bit of a logistics effort and if it doesn't go to plan could be quite a problem.

I am ordering a lease Q4 50 Sportback in Vorsprung trim for July 2022 delivery. I looked at various newer EVs such as ID.4, Enyaq, Mach-E, Ioniq 5 and EV6. In the end I opted for the safer option as far as styling goes because the Q4 was the best from the VAG bunch and in Quattro spec is perfectly fast enough. I personally do not like the Ioniq 5 or Ev6 styling and think the Ioniq 5 is trying far too hard. The Mach-E was a very close contender but the lack of boot space and the fact it was more expensive to lease than a full spec Q4 50 Sportback was a hard choice to justify.

I prefer the Audi styling as they have the "looks modern and stylish" without the over the top trying too hard nonsense some EV makers go for.

EDIT: I know a lot of people are saying the charging curve of the Ioniq 5 and the Ev6 are excellent and they are. The problem for me is the one time a year where I save ~10 minutes charging for a similar added range (Ioniq 5 vs Q4 50) is not going to be even a minor factor in car choice. Though I get that for others it's a big deal.

well the Q4 is in that section of Madame Tussauds too - autogefeul were saying the peugot one had a playstation gene. -
it's all part of the driverless conspiracy - 'Alexa turn right'

Yep, I was upset that you could not specify the normal steering wheel on the Q4 with the regen paddles. You can do it for the rest of Europe, maybe it's the EU bendy banana nonsense?

Though at least it did feel OKish during the test drive, so it was a case of prefer round but it's better than I thought.

yes - I can see you need to drive the car to really comment on wheel

after the discussion in the bm thread about interior colour - I'd swap black for this.
.. if only the new peugot 308 phev was on their electric platform - another cry out for a bev estate
