EV general discussion

Yes thanks for that, when I slowly saw my miles getting better it put me at ease.
So for example from the services I'd got 60 miles to go with 80 on the clock and by the time I got home going slower I'd got 40 remaining.
It's bloody hard to go slow in that car but thank whatever God for cruise control.

Certainly a good lesson as you said, you now have more knowledge than you did this morning about your car and its behaviour. I'm never really in a hurry anywhere I go these days, but I know what you mean about not noticing your speed as much in an EV.

Should get our quote in tomorrow, had the site visit today. Sounds pretty straightforward, going to take it straight out of the meter box via a mini fuse box. Cable will tuck under the lip of the wall of the house, just getting it behind the front hedge will be slightly fiddly. Hypervolt, black, 7.5m will be what we go for :)

Going to be great to have it and not have to plug in as much.

Speeds above 70 really seem to hammer range aswell. On a long run I’ll stick to 65 and yes you really lose hardly any time at all.

Had my first range anxiety today and it wasn't a good feeling.
I was doing an 160 mile round trip to meet a fellow OCUK'er to buy something and had 240 miles on the clock.
I couldn't go the way I wanted which was really straightforward because a section of the M1 was closed so I quickly found an alternative route,
On the way back I had put a stop for a service station (Leicester East) because me and the wife would bound to want a wee.
I ended up going to the stop point first because my route was the wrong way round which put me 30 miles away from my target so I had to ring him up and say I'd be another 25 minutes which he said was OK.
However this now meant it had turned into a 220 mile journey so we stopped at the same services to fill up but non of the chargers were working :(
I took a chance but remembered something somebody said which was to slow down to 60 and cruise and by the time I got home I'd got 40 miles left.
Anyway, lessons learned :(

40 miles?! That's loads :D

Well done on losing your range virginity, the anxiety will reduce hahaha. As someone above said, 40 miles is tons, that's at least half an hour's driving in reserve :D

edit: you did pick the worst possible services to stop at from an EV charging perspective though lol. Have you got zapmap, I'd use that for planning in future. You seem to like to do your research properly!

Pretty sure I said driving a bit slower makes a high difference in a EV on a longer trip but somehow got ridiculed for it.

How fast were you going?

It's definitely a balancing act, but yes, there are probably some journeys where it's actually quicker to drive slower whilst not needing to charge vs driving as fast as possible but needing to stop. So many variables to take into account though!

I thought I had done my homework :)
Problem is I'd put Home > Leicester East > Destination instead of Home > Destination > Leicester East > Home
I'd used both Google Maps and ABRP but you can't account for stupidity.
I hope to never do a distance like that again but I will put ZapMap on.

Around 70 to 73 with an odd burst of 80 now and then to get past something.
I then went down to 60 with 60 miles to go and when I was about 10 miles from home took it up to 65.

Mrs Sexy said I had 30 miles when I got home not 40 but it was still an increase of 10 miles instead of losing miles doing my faster speed.

I’m normally playing 27miles and 17 miles in journey. Using half a 80mile buffer appears to be a massive non issue I have to say.

Navigation to Leicester forest east isn’t the issue, it’s the fact the chargers there are barely fit for purpose as the grid connection hasn’t been upgraded.

In other news I panicked in the kids mini one yesterday. We were on a 10 mile round trip to their work the fuel light came on which is only A GALLON of fuel! OMG

Back home now.

Enterprise have provided an MG5. I got in it today and what a heap of poo.

Don't get me wrong, it was great they got her back on the road, but it is not in anyway shape or form an equivalent product to an ID 7.

In addition, they gave her the car with barely enough to get home - 6% left after driving very sedately. Apparently they don't have electric car chargers on site so can't charge them.

Alphabet started off really helpful, but have now become completely unresponsive.

Local VW garage reckon that they're going to update the software which will fix all the issues :(

Feeling like deja vu here.

I’ve spent a week chasing for updates & resolutions. Heard nothing

Today I made a trip to the dealer who have the car, and they’ve advised me they’ve been unable to repair it. They tried to replace the main computer I think but no good.

They’re now going to review each wiring loom and control unit to ensure they’re functioning properly, but can’t give me any indication as to when they’ll have it working.

In the meantime, I’m still stuck with the MG which doesn’t have the ability to set a charging schedule, and has a number of faults. Going round in circles with VW and Alphabet about getting a proper courtesy car, as I’ve argued that I’m not paying £410 a month for an MG.

Getting nowhere with anybody. Not sure what to do at this stage.

is your local? dealer competent to deal with electric vehicles , or, inexperienced, and they are learning on the job.

Sounds like they don't know what they're doing, and who's to say there won't be further issues when they've replaced all of these electrical systems?!

I'd focus on Alphabet and apply some pressure, it's their car and they are the ones you're paying.

Not really that local, it’s just the closest one to where the car broke down.

They’ve admitted they don’t. Apparently they’re having to do everything on a call with the maintenance head office in Germany or something so they can have someone walk them through what to do. This garage outright told me in December, the first time I tried to book it in for repair, that they didn’t have the capability to look at it.

Because it broke down this time while out and about, they had no choice but to take it in.

I did push Alphabet and they’ve said I can reject the car, but I’ll only receive a small sum as compensation (about 1/3 of what I’ve paid), so I’ll be massively out of pocket + have been made redundant in Dec last year, so won’t be able to take on another lease.

That is frustrating, perhaps try and go directly to VW UK head office (you can probably find the details of the CEO).

Explain that their support for the product is entirely unfit for purpose and they are selling a car that their own dealers are unable to repair!

It’s my biggest gripe.

When the car works it’s really quite nice. But it hasn’t worked more often than it has, and nobody is able to fix it.

Just for perspective, I can’t even get new wiper blades for it. They’ve been on back order with no given time frame!

What's the issue? Did you put down a huge deposit which you'll not be able to amortise basically?

Haha what!!!
