EV general discussion

7 years, how time flies!

I just had a quick gander on autotrader and there is a 19 plate on 50k miles listed for under £14k, that is a lot of car for the money.

Bjorn test menthod is just interogate OBD2 data isnt it? Its just not a credible method for him to do a video on.

The mind boggles. Power discharge is another aging effect, not just energy capacity.

yes would be a pain if the 10yr old battery had little degradation on capacity but charging/discharge rates degraded ... or ? cold weather performance was disproportionately degraded.
Do manufacturers keep a fleet of older vehicles, regularly used, just to see what the +3sigma case is.

... at least with trump shenanigans the price of petrol is low.

As is my S&S ISA (AKA my pension pot).

As I was crawling through 15 minutes of gridlock on the A14 last night due to a dead i-pace in lane 1 I had to chuckle at the bonnet being up. It's pretty meaningless on an ICE vehicle as I'm sure most people look in and go "well... The engine is still there" but I'm not sure it's even that relevant on an EV :p Maybe it was just a symbolic gesture to all the ****** off commuters to say 'not my fault, she died' :D

I did feel for the guy but at least the emergency services were on scene to ensure it didn't get rear ended.

Might have been disconnecting the 12v battery, fixes a multitude of issues. Not sure if they can do that with the bonnet closed yet. ;)
Good thinking, hadn't thought of that.

They seem to have given up whatever they were trying to do and were just awaiting a tow.

Weirdly I saw loads of cars broken down in a live lane during my last trip. The worst was on the M6 which appeared to have every section of variable speed limit set to 50 with "No SOS phones" as the justification. It was interesting watching a growing proportion of drivers think sod this and ignore the limit only slowing down for the cameras. By the end it felt like just me and an old boy in a Sportage towing the line.

The signs then swapped to "Stranded Vehicle" but by that point no one was paying attention... Until they came across the stopped Corsa in lane 1. Very sketchy.

Getting vaguely back on topic I saw my first Renault 5 in the wild. While the Honda-E and Ionic 5 were a massive disappointment when I saw them in the metal I thought the 5 still looked pretty neat.

Love an old Top Gear video and this one popped up in my feed.

Reminds me of all the people who need an 800 mile range before fill-ups or the car just won't work for them. Looking at some of the maths in the video the total is ~800 miles, first leg was 7h 58 mins, so about 50MPH average speed, going slower than lorries and drafting etc. no heating, no other creature comforts, weeing in a bottle rather than stopping, and he still stopped over night! So efficient for a big old car, reasonably so, but very slow when you can do the same thing in a modern EV, and charge from 10-60% in 10-15 minutes while using a proper toilet. Still a good/funny video, and I totally forgot it existed, but really goes to show just how long driving that far takes and not stopping is highly unlikely.

Can you do 40mpg in a V8 diesel?

Yes.

Would you want to?

**** no.

Batteries FTW.

78.9p/L! Those were the days :D

TBH I miss the range of my old Passat TDI with it's 70L tank. It was never about not stopping, more about cost and convenience. Fill up before I set off and all but my longest of trips wouldn't need refueling at all.

My Insignia had a 70l tank - I once got 915 miles out of it.

Have not managed that with my Polestar yet…

When I started driving it was 55p/l back in the mid/late 90’s. Had a Carina E that ran forever on a fivers worth :p. Clattery 306 DT was the best for economy for me. Anyone remember the blockades when fuel hit a quid a litre!

On another note, loving this weather, the VW brick is doing 4.7m/kw locally, still a poor 3.8 on the motorway, but that could be due to the still cold mornings.

with the current 1.30/litre felt like we should be swapping back to gallons - who thinks about m/L or eu L/100km, kw/100km, so that's 50miles range for a pint of beer;
at public ev charging rates it doesn't seem so bad.

Haven't seen a r5 on the road yet (maybe tesla vision should be identifying car brands) but first prius / the yellow (*****) a few days ago -
the aero front profile is distinctive even in bev field , a bit esprit like.

I dont know anyone in this country who talks about consumption other than mpg. What are you on about ?

Swapping back to gallons ? Since when was fuel charged per gallon? Not in my lifetime

How is it working out cost wise for business use?

For as long as HMRC hang a figure of 7ppm on electricity I can't see our finance guy offering anything other than that. I'm sure that is the case in many businesses and that's a big problem :(

Work pay for any public charging if the journey is above 200 miles, i try to be fair with them and seek out cheaper charging where i can, which tends to mainly Tesla charging. Since they introduced the additional payment, the only people taking EV were low mileage people, take up since the change has been huge. After 2026 we wont be able to choose anything other than an EV.

Worst range ive had in winter is 220 miles. No regrets on the move so far.
