Generally no - not without getting the garage to plug into it.

This is something that needs to change IMO, as it would help the second hand market grow. We know the separate warranty details specifically for the battery, but it’s not much use if we can’t see the figure ourselves!
 
I saw a LOT of EV in Hong Kong, a LOT of Tesla, and I mean a LOT.

It turns out that fuel there cost about £2 per litre, and if you buy a car, there is a 100% duty/tax on the value of the car, so a £100k car has a £100k duty on top, but EV is 0% rated. People would still get it even without a charger at their parking spot as many park at the car park in their building and they can't install chargers so they would go to a shopping mall for dinner and park at the charger there for a few hours to get it charged for the week.

Also saw lots of other brands of EV, Chinese EV, they all look more interesting than Tesla IMO.

Depends on if you've already driven it and likely to buy it. You could always say if I do the test and it is below xx% then I get to hand the car back within my cooling off period, or speak to the dealer manager. Problem is people don't like to ask and always assume a negative response, they are going to get asked this more and more often why not be the first?

I just came back as well... so many BYD and Maxus EVs all over the place as well as plenty of Tesla

Think about it.

They said not to talk in EVs. It's not like there isn't voice control and mics and nav in other cars. It's not like it's only Chinese components that can be hacked.

Do we think Chinese hackers can only hack Chinese equipment? Do we think they can only hack EVs.

hard to compare insurance quotes but for interest I got quotes of £602 for the single motor and £660 for the dual motor. wasn't as much of a difference as I expected

need to do product analysis/tear-down, good engineering practice;
but, moreover, ensure you could get a charger installed for less than any home charging cost savings you'd get, or that insurance cost wouldn't be onerous;
Generation X legacy, we are not the now/prime generation, who purchase in haste repent at leisure.

Or any car made in the last 40+ years with an aftermarket stereo... My 2009 Octavia had WiFi, microphones and cameras after I fitted an Xtrons headunit.

How many supposedly "safe" cars have a cheap Chinese webcam fitted?

Surely it's either a potential problem with all cars (unless specifically checked and whitelisted) or it's not?

Can't help but think it's just the usual knee-jerk posturing and lack of joined up thinking we're used to seeing from our great and glorious leadership :rolleyes:

Except it's not generation X is it? I know loads of people from your generation who purchase large items all the time. They do their research, crunch the numbers, and if it fits, they buy it. If generation x were really that bad our economy would grind to a halt as nobody would have bought anything for a couple of decades.

Anyway, musing this morning, MOTs on EVs, how do they compare to ICE MOTs? Obviously there will be no emmissions testing and stuff like lighting / brakes / whatever will be the same, but are there any inspections on the battery packs? I'd have thought that a damaged pack under a car would be a fail, is that the case? Do EVs have special modes for brake testing, given that the majority of their braking is actually regen and doesn't tax the actual braking system at all. Then there's the weight, some of these things weigh as much as a London bus, can the rollers at testing stations take this, or have they had to upgrade? Random thoughts, no idea why :confused:

EDIT: Just looked and a model S plaid weighs less than a G63, so I guess that won't be too much of a factor.
