EV general discussion

it's easy enough to test the brakes on an EV.
don't get me wrong I deliberately try to drive such that all my motion is recovered on regen.

but drive it like a17 year old boy (or girl) racer and you can still get the brakes to activate easily enough

I write this from a VW dealership where I was supposed to be collecting my ID.7

Roughly £5,500 of work has been done to the car, in addition to the cost of the loan car (probably £100+ a day for 21 days+)

I get in the car and two of the issues are still immediately present:

Interruption/mid typing edit - parts guy just came over and replaced the wipers with a newly revised part. They had replaced already and that didn’t solve the issue. The new part has a “C” designation after the part number to indicate it had a new compound and they are perfect. No streaks or smears.

Now just one issue I noticed in the first 30s - windows still go down when I try and put them up.

I’ve yet to check:

- Keyless entry (it was an intermittent issue)
- Access to app to pre warm/cool car
- Brakes (they’re too spongy and there’s a sudden transition from regeneration to friction brakes at low speed, resulting in sudden stops at manoeuvring speeds)
- Rattles/buzzes
- CarPlay issues

When I’m next at my laptop I’ll list out all the work done, but there’s a fair bit considering it’s a new car.

Service guy had to pop out so waiting for him to come back to discuss next steps.

I've noticed this on a couple of newer VW Group cars, you drop the window a bit but when you pull the button to put it back up, it drops further instead before eventually coming back up

Yeah it’s a known issue which I asked them to resolve, but they haven’t :(

It's such a baffling thing to get wrong too - they've been making perfectly functional electric windows for decades - who decided something needed to change in the first place and then how on earth has it been allowed to introduce such a basic flaw in the process?

I do wonder about that too. Do brake pads last forever? I suspect they get a lot less use than on an ICE car so will technically last a lot longer. Do they not go brittle / crack / whatever?

Christ I'm starting to sound like jpaul.

Biggest issue is rust. No heat to dry out so disks look crap and caliper seize etc. worth using the brakes properly now at then

Do all EVs completely skip regen and go straight to 100% friction brakes in an 'emergency' stab of the stop pedal?

If so there are plenty of oblivious drivers out there to keep the friction brakes in check every now and then :p

It absolutely is. They’ve not been able to sort it so ordering more parts in and I’ll go back another day

Will give me the chance to test the car for the other issues in the meantime

Anyway, musing this morning, MOTs on EVs, how do they compare to ICE MOTs? Obviously there will be no emmissions testing and stuff like lighting / brakes / whatever will be the same, but are there any inspections on the battery packs? I'd have thought that a damaged pack under a car would be a fail, is that the case? Do EVs have special modes for brake testing, given that the majority of their braking is actually regen and doesn't tax the actual braking system at all. Then there's the weight, some of these things weigh as much as a London bus, can the rollers at testing stations take this, or have they had to upgrade? Random thoughts, no idea why

EDIT: Just looked and a model S plaid weighs less than a G63, so I guess that won't be too much of a factor.
Everything is the same apart from the emissions stuff which is missed.

Some modern cars have to be road tested because they can’t be used on the rollers.

Why would an MOT tester be concerned about the condition of the battery pack any more than the general condition of an ICE car?

They’ll regen and friction brake but regen should be cut completely if traction is lost and the ABS kicks in which is most of the time if you stamp on the anchors.

I’m over in Pakistan at the moment, and surprising there’s quite a few EV’s here, and EV moped things. The surprise is the poor electrical supply, so many power cuts and load shedding! I’ve been driving a ‘86 1.3 Corolla and my god I don’t half miss EV motoring

Audi's on the right track, segment those chinese/hk super-size grill customers and the european ones, chinese must still think bigger is synonymous with wealth.

seems a hiatus in ev designs/platforms ... waiting for CLA/MMA, octavia&AudiA4 /SSP , neue klasse 3er

Who are they styling these vehicles for? literally no one I know wants a vehicle which looks like these modern designs, while quite a few don't care what their car looks like I'd say the broader number are in the kind of 2010 era Mondeo kind of what they want in terms of looks while the rest are split between things like the executive saloon looks of that era, etc. etc.

Why would an MOT tester be concerned about the condition of the battery pack any more than the general condition of an ICE car?

A damaged pack could be a safety issue e.g. if it were to short or allow water ingress, an ICE with a hole in the fuel tank would fail, why should it be different when an EV has a similar fault?

I'm all for pedestrian safety but strapping a mattress to the front/back of a car is going a bit too far.

I don't get it.

What does having the word "AUDI" achieve, rather than just slapping the traditional 4 rings logo on that big front slab (or the leading edge of the bonnet)?

They saw the new JaGuar rebrand heard it was one of the worst rebrands ever and someone shouted "hold my beer!"

Apparently the Chinese market has very different tastes to the western world. Perhaps it ticks their boxes and we just get stuck with it

edit... i just saw JPauls post where he said similar......... Jesus christ should i be worried? :D

(i am teasing!)

edit its not being launched over here so no big deal......
