EV general discussion

Got a nailed on date for the iX3 finally.

13th May, 1 month after I was supposed to get it.

Apparently 400 cars were put on a campaign hold or something for software updates and it was taking the Southampton VDC ages to clear them and mine was part of that.

I’ve been very tempted to get one of these, but I must resist until the coupe/saloon is out.

The iX5 has been unveiled to have a 147.8kW battery

That will be the largest in a European built car by some margin

This is where some form of legislation needs to be brought in, where if a battery is over a certain size the vehicle must support V2H or V2G, and the first owner should get a grant towards the compatible charger/discharger.

The next round of anti-EV complaining will be that you can't recharge your 140kWh battery in 6 hours at home for the 500 mile trip you do every single day and so such a big battery is completely pointless anyway, you might as well have a car with an 80kWh battery and stop to charge now and then :p

All the (posh) caravaners will be queuing up for this :p

Potentially 250 miles range with a huge caravan on the back if the efficiency is reasonable.

Edit that’s gross capacity so probably more like 135 usable? Even still that’s ~245 full to empty, it’s basically what my Y gets solo in colder temps.

if you've already need a charger for wifes car, and have 90milel/day £300/pm petrol bill, doesn't a £250pm fuel saving enable you to sit in a better quality ev and offset it's other ownership costs,
like a ford capri @£450pm just beneath super tax, with efficient 550 motor ... just looked over one in red at supmkt.
I don't spend that much on fuel. I do a 90-95 mile round trip when I'm at work but I only work 140ish days per year. So about £160-170 per month on fuel. I will get one eventually as I like the drive, when I find the right one for me. I know the lease route is find the deal not the car but that's not really what I look for in a car that I spend 2/12 hours in per day when I commute.

That fake suede is fantastic for a short period of time if you are keeping the car for a short period of time. It doesn't wear well at all. My wife has Alcantara and I wouldn't ever want it again. I have it on the very edges of my mini seats but not a part you actually sit on so they look like new.

I have heated seats so never have an issue with the cold leather in winter or even thought the seats were hot in the summer. To be fair though I never use the heated seats either but my son turns them on any time he gets in the car :D

My Cupra Born is 3 years old in July and has 26500 miles on it and the Dynamica looks almost as good as new to be fair. Certainly no more wear than a typical leather seat after the same mileage.

A 1000km challenge does not show the efficeincy, its showing the charging speed and the size of the battery - 257.5Wh/km.

From the link:
"The iX3 posts that result through a specific combination: big battery, fast charging, and efficiency that holds up when you’re driving hard on the motorway. Most EVs are good at one or two of those. The iX3 does all three"

Coming to the end of my NHS lease and options aren't amazing:

Q6 Etron Quattro
A6 Avant RWD version
BYD Sealion 7
Q4 Etron
BMW iX1 xdrive
MGS5 (dirt cheap)

The Q4 and iX1 are too small really.

Q6 Etron is the most expensive, A6 I've driven and felt a bit cheap inside, the BYD is almost tempting, need to go have a look at one in the flesh, theyre only 40k nearly new, tempted to just buy one.

An opinion of someone else on an article that is pro BMW doesn't make what I said any less valid - the difference is mainly from the massive battery and faster charging, the efficiency is not class leading but getting there. The old ix3 was 261wh/km in -4c to -10c as an example. See Bjorn's own sheet

Aerodynamics seem to be ignored. This is a massive car, with big wheel and going to have significant drag. You can’t just talk about batteries and motors

Running costs still be tiny in any case

Wouldnt be enough. Home charging is usually at 7kwh, So thats over 20 hours to change from empty to full. Since you only get 6 hours at cheap rate, it's going to expensive to home charge

I think you misunderstood my post - I was making a joke about using a granny charger at only the off peak cheap rate, which would work out (with a 5 hour window) at the best part of 3 weeks empty to full…

To be fair my wife’s iX2 has very good efficiency for a mid sized SUV coupe. It is about 5% more efficient than my smaller Cupra Born. So BMW are doing something right with their EV efficiency numbers.
