A 1000km challenge does not show the efficeincy, it’s showing the charging speed and the size of the battery - 257.5Wh/km.
Doesn’t show efficiency then you quote the efficiency number? Wot?

Every single car is run in different temperatures and weather conditions. Rain has a big impact on that spreadsheet is info. But not a comparison at all.

I have no idea why people think those buying a BMW X5 worry about efficiency either.

I loved my old I-Pace and not once have I felt its efficiency was a problem. I keep telling people that people buy EVs for more than just the efficiency. Some of us want a good car that just happens to be electric.

Absolutely nobody is buying a large or largish luxury marquee SUV EV and having efficiency remotely top of their list of “must haves”. Just like the same people buying a Range Rover don’t give a crap about MPG.

To be fair my wife’s iX2 has very good efficiency for a mid sized SUV coupe. It is about 5% more efficient than my smaller Cupra Born. So BMW are doing something right with their EV efficiency numbers.
The point being that it is good not for the efficiency though, its good at the 1000km challenge due to a massive battery and max 3.54C rating for charging the pack, although the average over 10-80% is ~2C, and as Bjorn points out in the video 10-60% is optimal. As I said I am not saying it is not good, I am saying its OK, but nothing new from the efficiency point of view.

None of which matters because the iX3 is aimed at a demographic that does not give a crap about efficiency in their EVs.

No I was referring to my wife’s iX2 being decently efficient for a mid sized SUV as it slightly beats my Born. The point I was making is BMW are doing some decent work in their EV efficiency.

No problems. - I wasn't claiming they would, everyone will buy something for 'reasons' and unless you survey every buy you'll never know why they chose that specific vehicle - I was just saying its brute forced the range with a large pack and fast charging, nothing wrong with that but again it comes down to real world vs numbers in marketing etc. Having a larger pack to charge if you can't find a charger that delivers 400kW might annoy the demographic that buys this, as you end up with something that isn't as you hoped, and efficeincy impacts that to some extent as well.

Are you possibly conflating brute force and exceeding requirements? Brute force implies relying on strength in one area. The iX3 dos not do brute force and basically achieves those numbers by delivering good to great metrics in charging speed, battery size and efficiency. BMW were aiming for a luxury SUV EV that their ICE customers can transition into without any serious compromises. It more than counters the anti EV nonsense of delivering equivalent ICE rivalling range. Good luck with any equivalent performance ICE luxury SUV giving 450 miles on a single tank.

They could have given it a 25% smaller battery of about 80kWh and it would be lighter and a bit more efficient (rivalling Tesla Model Y) and still give around 350 miles of combined driving range. But that was clearly not the design brief.

They weren’t looking for yet another of a long list of “Tesla contenders” for EVangilists to critique the efficiency not being good enough. They were looking for an SUV to sell to their existing ICE customer base.

TBH most people looking at X5s and the like today, seem to be renting them. I’ve haven’t driven an I pace, so can’t say how good they are, but an inefficient electric SUV would have to be outstanding in other ways before I’d consider buying one and for an SUV to be outstanding (at least for me) it would also have to be reasonably lightweight so by extension reasonably efficient.
 
What’s the issue with inefficiency? Range or cost to run? Even 1m/kwh is half the price of fuel

You can’t have lightweight and a big battery either. So what’s the issue with a massive battery if efficiency is down due to the car (not the EV hardware )
