EV general discussion

I was supposed to be getting my iX3 tomorrow, but received a call at 4 p.m. yesterday telling me there was a safety recall and BMW couldn't legally hand it over.

No idea how long it'll be. BMW chat said:

So an actual hardware issue, but luckily in the Gen 6 cars they made it easier to repair that sort of thing. On an iX, i5 etc (Gen 5) they would have to break the battery seal and sort it that way!

I thought I might be getting a lemon, but it has affected a bunch of cars.
Hope it gets sorted quickly. My i5 had the brake recall back in 2024, arrived in UK July 2024 and was PDI'd and quite literally 2 days from being delivered then BMW UK stopped it, eventually delivered to me Jan 2025......

What's peoples view on purchasing a used EV?

Looking at replacing my current car with an EV and there are some 2022/2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Premium Spec with 20-40k miles from £17-18.5k. They are the revised MY23 models with the 77kWh battery and battery pre conditioning as standard.

If I got a 2023 model, then that's Hyundai warranty until 2028 and 2031 for the battery.

!

I don't really know what do to, as my GV70 was set to go back and I can only keep it a bit longer.

I think BMW should be providing courtesy cars, but I'm dealing with a broker and not the actual BMW dealer.

As with any used car, it completely depends on the individual vehicle. I'd have no concerns after doing the usual due diligence.

Possibly made a big error yesterday and ordered an Abarth 600e Competizione :D

I’ve been sharing cars with family now my daughter is driving and needed something for myself, can’t make my mind up so was just going to buy a used Kona or Niro to pootle about in, perfect really for the bit of city driving I do but 10-15k on a car I don’t really like.

Then I saw the lease deal ~ £5.5k for 2yrs, almost disposable at that price thought why not. Ok a bit cheap inside considering the cost of the car but I don’t mind at this price. :D

Super short range not really a problem for me, our XC60 T8 35-40 mile battery suits me daily with charge left over.

I’m going to be an EV owner … Gulp

If I don’t get on with it I could buy something else and it can just sit on the drive :D

I think it’s a fab fun quirky car for that money

Of course I meant that against the backdrop of what I'd loose in depreciation buying something new that I decide I want to get shot of, but yeah got a lovely belt. :D

£5.5k to drive a car for 2 years is a bargain.

Even back when I had the Polestar 2 from early 2021 it was nearly double that over 2 years, and that seemed like a good deal.

Picked up the EV6 GT today holy hell it’s good. The acceleration is phenomenal, GT mode just wants to rip the tyres off won’t be using that often. Really impressed well apart from the insurance cost but hey ho…

Who says the GT is bad on range. Over 7mkwh (definitely not down hill at full regen. Lol)

Make sure you're aware of the security vulnerabilities (if you aren't already) and consider turning keyless entry off. I watched CCTV footage the other day of one stolen a couple of weeks ago from a public car park using the "Game Boy" attack, the thieves were in it and driving off within about 45 seconds of arriving.

That would be usually up to the dealership to provide. I once had a A3 on order and because it was delayed the dealership provided me with a new Q3 that I couldn't wait to get rid of.
I guess if you are going through a broker that's entirely different.

Keyless entry is off in the settings and always lock with the double push as well as keys in a faraday box/Pouch.

Not much more you can do I’m not sure Kia offers the same update Hyundai have for the older models £49 to update it. Really crap you have to pay to fix a known issue but I doubt Hyundai/Kia really care.

I really like them and looked into getting one myself. What put me off though is just how easy and how often they get stole. Then add on the ICU issues and I decided to pass. I know they have extended the warranty on the ICE issues now but apparently it can take weeks to months to get a replacement fitted. I just can't be without a car for that long should it happen.

Yeah, that’s what’s putting me off as well. I have a disklok that I use for all the cars I’ve owned and has served as a good visual deterrent but I have read about the ICU issues as well.

He means ICCU and they've extended the warranty on that for 15 years in Europe and apparently Hyundai UK are now also honoring that should it occur, and giving loan cars anyhow so no impact. In terms of being stolen, its been fixed with a update and it is easy to mitigate by turning off remote unlock.
