EV general discussion

When I said erratic implementation of roads I'm generalising in terms of layout but also how people park, agricultural traffic and so on - some of the villages around here if it is remotely busy you have to do a lot of planning ahead / behind to make use of passing spaces and so on which even with advanced AI would need a ton of computing power to get close to AI coping with let alone coping with safely. Most of the example videos are just 1 or 2 cars in a limited choke point rather than dealing with multiple vehicles of different types with mixed obstacles over the length of a small village, etc.

Sure you can intervene and/or take control through the worst bits if driving but another story for things like driverless taxis, etc.
I suspect you are underestimating how good these systems have gotten. Did you watch the video I posted above from China?

Granted it’s an hour long but some of the situations the cars handled without issue were extremely challenging.

Cyclists everywhere going the right way, wrong way and every way, pedestrians everywhere doing the same, parked cars everywhere, cars pulling over and over obstacles. There were areas where there was hordes of scooters traveling the wrong way down a one way street.

All handled just fine.

who honestly is going to sleep and trust other road uses / technology anyway, even if its legal. Driving modern cars with lane assist and active cruise is so easy now they practically drive themselves.
maybe I am naive but so long as it was legal and reliable enough that the burden of responsibility was on the car for insurance I would trust it.

reaction wise in theory it could be better than any human and won't get distracted.
I don't worry about driverless trains/trams so once it's legal I won't worry about cars either.

possibly going OT a little however it does seem to be EVs which have the tech for better self driving (is Ford blue cruise in any ICE vehicles yet?)

edit I was wrong... some ICE fords do have it so it's not EV at all.

Probably me.

I wouldn’t sleep but if I could do something else, happy days.

Nearly all the crashes these days involving these cars is being rear ended by another driver who isn’t paying any attention. Autonomous or not, you’re still getting rear ended.

No doubt when every car has it, it could unlock some benefits. Like the peloton a the truck industry have been talking about for years.

But in a car I’m quite happy being in control listening the radio. I guess watching something could be useful if it’s ever Legal

Sure there is a lot going on but those are mostly block pattern flat streets in wide open areas and multiple lanes with forward progress just about getting the timing right - not dealing with having to plan spaces ahead which might be partly obscured to sensors, planning around other traffic opening up spaces as they move which you need to utilise to make progress, having to reverse at times to facilitate traffic flow, etc. and making sure traffic the other way or from side roads can clear as necessary to keep everyone moving.

It wasn’t a serious comment but they’d still need a job (oof as the kids said 5 years ago) and off street parking (no chance) to get what their millennial overlords will have.

I guess they could use their millennial parents off street parking which they might inherit 60% of in 2060.

when the first oncoming waymo flashes me to drive through a double-parked street , I'll know they are sentient
otherwise the chinese assisted driving systems are woeful if you had an emergency situation from youtube's posted before. (sudden carriageway partial obstructions)

A massive off topic but I don't get why people continue this generational wealth issue. Well, I do.... the fear of living to 100 and having to pay for care for the last quarter of a century of your existence.

I guess it is easier as we only have one child but we've already stated shifting wealth his way and he hasn't turned 5 yet. I'd rather he have it than spending it on crap I don't need now or it going to fund Motability Jaecoo's on my eventual demise.

Having been on the receiving end of a 6 figure inheritance tax bill its sickening. I was constantly telling my mum to spend and enjoy, she lived like a pauper on her state pension and a small private pension, never even saying she had savings, then when the worst happens the government comes in and takes all her savings and more, would rather she had spent it than trying to pass it on.

These views might be controversial but at the end of the day having a 6 figure IHT bill is a nice problem to have for the person receiving the inheritance.

To generate a £100k bill you generally need at least a £750k+ estate to hand down as there is £500k of nil rate bands to use if passing property to a descendent as a single person. It’s over £1.25m if they had a spouse with an unused band.

Pension pots aren’t in scope currently so it could be much much bigger.

Generally speaking the government would rather they spend it at well. Why?

Because drawing down pension pots and savings generates more tax revenue more quickly. There are wider economic benefits which would filter to working age people.

£100k tax bill on a £1.25m estate is an effective tax rate of only 8%, on the £750k example it’s 13%.

IHT only really gets ‘expensive’ when you have a whacking great big estate to hand down and you didn’t do any planning.

Edit: waaaaaay off topic. Anyone driven a Volvo EX60 yet?
