EV general discussion

Despite going through finance and paying for a deposit on a car, I’ve now been told there isn’t one available.

I’m now in a compromised position having cancelled my payments to Alphabet and having a hard credit search on my account for the Hyundai. Unlikely to be accepted on anything else and not willing to take the risk.

Fuming would be an understatement.
On your complaint, I’d also request that as part of your complaint resolution, that they delete the credit application search from your credit file so your basically in the position before all this happened.

Anyone here have an MG4 X Power? If so how's it being?

I'm planning to buy a crossover EV in few months and starting to consider my options, looking for something around that 200-300kw performance, 400km+ range and AWD or RWD. What other options should I look at? I'm not looking at Teslas as they're too long for my liking, the model Y is around 4.8m or 4.9m in length , I want to stick to under 4.4m as I have a narrow driveway I need to do uturn in every day

What do you need. Fast in straight line or something that’s more of a car that does everything else well. The power is a one trick pony

Coming down the A34, and over the course of a few miles watched lots of system errors pop up; charging, TPMS, SOS calls etc. Driver screen then went blank followed a minute or two later by the HUD and centre screen. With no speed info I headed for the exit to the services. Got to the red light and it turned itself off. Nothing would get any response out of it. Highways came and recovered it into the services 200 yds away (for the princely sum of £192) and Volvo can't recover it until tomorrow.

Got an uber home and realised I'd left my keys in it. Headed back on the motorbike and arrived around 6hrs after it failed. The car is acting like nothing ever happened. No error messages or warnings. Took it for a spin round the block and its fine.

Because I was on the motorbike I couldn't take it home, so wondering if I still have it recovered to the dealer tomorrow or take it myself and see how it goes.

Volvo Assist were terrible btw.

You won't get that range out of one.

What would you recommend?

I do understand that range may be an issue because I'm trying to limit myself to cars at or under 4.4meters in length and that instantly puts a significant limit on battery size, probably I won't be able to find anything over 70kWh but that's ok. Thing would change if solid state battery came to market since they have much higher density but who knows when that will be

None of the ~60kWh - 64kWh EVs will get 400km+ in winter and the more power oriented ones will struggle to get that in summer.

For 400km+ you are going to need to look for something with at least a 70kWh battery. And the AWD or RWD and length, as well as turning circle requirements rule out almost everything but a larger battery MG4 extended range, or MEB platform (77kWh Cupra Born, ID.3)

You will get the usual responses from people claiming “my Tesla/Niro/Kona” gets that easily. The key word there is “my”. What they get means absolutely nothing, zilch, nada, to what “you” will get. Especially if you plan to drive spiritedly.

So what you want is achievable, but you could lower your expectations on range and accept a 15 minute DC top up gets you that extra 100km of range you need in winter.

7X kwh ID3 or Born.

Born has a bit more character, ID3 has a bit more generic car vibes.

Both are ultimately good cars and a car nicer place to spend time than an MG4 but you’ll pay more for them.

Oh man :(

I know exactly how you’ll be feeling.

My suggestion for you - reject the car right now.

Hassle? Yes. You will be avoiding so much pain as once you’re through 30 days it will become a mountain to climb, not a hill.

A car which is going wrong this early on is, in my experience, not going to be a happy car.

That's a real shame.

In case you were not aware (and I only know this as a friend has one), a couple of weeks back Volvo finally launched a massive update for the EX60 & 90 to fix loads of bugs in the software, his dealer contact him already to have is brought in, his failed with same symptoms as yours but luckily it was on the street where he lived.

My wife's 5month old Model 3 has just got the dreaded BMS_a079 error = max charge 50% , 1 of the the cells is faulty so new battery pack  . 13 day wait for service centre hopefully that will reduce due to the actual fault.

Yeah I’ve heard that there should be a fix for some of these issues but I don’t know if my car already has it installed or not. I guess we’ll see next week perhaps.

I feel completely abandoned by Volvo Assist. The car still hasn’t been recovered to the dealership and they won’t authorise a rental car until it has. Meanwhile I’m without a car. I took a taxi home from the roadside which cost £120 and they’re already arguing that, saying they won’t pay it. They also won’t cover the Highways Agency recovery to a safe location fee - £192. The call handlers come across as ambivalent and completely disinterested in helping.

I’ve raised a formal complaint with Volvo UK, who I might also add weren’t able to do anything to assist in the circumstances. Volvo Assist can’t authorise a rental because they need Volvo UK to do so. Volvo UK say they can’t do it, Volvo Assist have to do it internally, and none of them can give me any info on what they next steps are because that’s a local Volvo dealer issue. The fragmentation and lack of ownership for seeing this through to a satisfactory resolution is extremely frustrating.

Even if this gets fixed and I have no further issues, it will leave a long lasting bitter taste for the brand.

I don't think MG4 is too far off 250 miles especially in that sort of climate and speed limits that aren't dissimilar here. Obvs is not mixed mode and measuring at 110kph then it won't.
I had the normal long range and driving a roads last summer in eco mode wouldn't have hit that range and the X power is a fair bit lower on wltp iirc

I don't the it's that far off 250 miles though, even EV database puts it at 225 miles combined as they tend to be conservative on their estimations. I only know one person who owns and X-Power and she drives it around town, so can't really ask her as she'll be getting way over mixed use range.
