MOOGLEYS mentioned winter, which I said wasn't the same as the UK.

Then incomes ICDP with a comment about. "Yes, true but it’s also still colder than typical UK summers" which was wrong and I pointed out such.

Which I already agreed with by saying mixed driving show 225 miles on EV database in 23c averages. the very first comment at the top.

No one else felt the need to edit any of their posts to change what was said

What does that even mean? - if you edit a post type EDIT: and show what your changed as otherwise you are obfuscating your original statement that has been replied to and can make the response look incorrect.

The outcome should be what loss does an EV in New Zealand suffer in their winter as it will not be anything like the UK or Ireland, and how does that materially change what the person asked in the first place.

I am sure someone will be along to comment that 10-15c is freezing and it's going to be rubbish etc. etc. I am looking for actual data which no one here will have any real experience, you have the closest with summer experience, perhaps early to mid spring could be extrapolated to their winter conditions.

One of the comments that highlights how different people view EVDB. I have always found that it matched pretty much every EV I owned within a few percent. Yet other EV owners claim it over or underestimates by quite a bit.

For example EVDB has been spot on in percentage terms on the difference in efficiency between all 5 of the EVs I owned.

Realistically all that indicates is how we are all different in how we drive.

The important thing about EVDB is that it is a good source to identify relative percentage differences between EVs for efficiency and charging. It’s for that purpose I find it very useful.

If you dismiss it because it doesn’t exactly match the efficiency you get in “your” EV, you are using it wrong.

Note: This comment is not calling anyone out, just pointing out we are all different. I had a friend who was convinced his Audi E-Tron 50 had a bad battery because he was getting 20% less range than my identical E-Tron 50. No amount of me explaining his average long term speed was 10mph higher than on mine, would placate his perceived anger at Audi.

Or another colleague at work who thinks I am lying when I tell him our iX2 xDrive 30 gets 270 miles of range currently. Because his previous iX1 xDrive 30 had in his words “never got over 220 miles”.

Both of these EV owners dismiss EVDB as BS because it isn’t even close to their perception of reality.

Getting the mini serviced this week. You just know I’m going to get screwed over, despite it barely needing anything done.

Can’t you shop around? You don’t need to go to the official garage. Plenty of EV specialist garages can do it a lot cheaper and it doesn’t affect the warranty (if it still has one).
 
I booked mine in with the local hevra garage the other day. £230 for service/brake fluid change. £370+ for the same thing at VW
 
Question for the old timers here, back when Tesla first started installing Superchargers in the UK how long did it take before they became pretty common? (as in say one every 50 miles).

I've seen that BYD are bringing 1500kw chargers to the UK which will add 250 miles to compatible EVs in 5 minutes, which means after all these years of waiting buying an EV will finally be viable for me as long as I can find these chargers :D (I know I will be limited to new BYD and compatible models).
It’s all about where they can get grid capacity these days. Back when Tesla first started, grid was less of an issue, it was convincing hosts to hand over areas of their carpark for a decade plus.

All UK CPOs already struggle to get grid capacity where drivers want it. BYD will be no different.

These chargers need to the buffered out with batteries because they’ll not get the grid to support them. They will not be cheap unless they choose to run it on a subsidised basis.

Anyone who has charged at Cornwall services will know that once the buffer is gone, they’ll be capped by whatever grid speed they have at that location.

It's a pipe dream tbh, I doubt it will amount to anything just like Nio and their battery swap stations

Why are chargers a pipe dream? Nio have zero presence in the UK so not really comparable. BYD already have the best part of 7,000 deployed across China, and the technology is proven.

Special double chargers only for a specific model range of BYD which require massive grid connections - the economics simply doesn't work

And a typical 800V car only needs 15 minutes anyway, you're only saving a few minutes
 
I thought the byd flash chargers had a battery system connected to reduce the grid peak power demand?
Big battery = more expense

These big Chinese firms might just stick a load of capex into it and not care about making money but from a commercial perspective it wouldn't wash its face.

It will drive sales towards BYD from the people who see 5 mins charging, and can't figure out just how little time a normal 800v charger would add, because they think stopping for toliet break in a service s takes 3.457 milliseconds, not sure what the 800 miles without stopping crew will do still.

1500kW chargers are crazy on paper - that's equal to the same power around 200 houses would use, yes it's only for 5 mins to charge the car but it's like 200 houses turning on everything they have at once, it's a big impact on the grid that's what they need batteries, even a rich country like China isn't letting them connect the chargers without batteries

Back on topic of a 400+km RWD EV shorter than 4.4m for NZ. For @Grim5

MG.4 Long range with 74kWh useable battery fits the bill. A 61kWh version will get nowhere near that if you aren’t prepared to compromise on a quick top up at a rapid.


Thanks, unfortunately that model is no longer for sale in this part of the world, it's been replaced with the facelift MG4 and MG4 Xpower, both with the 64kWh battery

What do you guys think of the Volvo EX30?

When did you last fast charge then.

Drives a cheap ass Niro with a 150 mile range then preaches to others about what they should drive

Theyre both made by geely and have the same base architecture....so...
You're basically buying the same car, but one has the MG badge, the other has a Volvo badge.
One is more expensive than the other...
It's just like buying an Audi Vs a Skoda :cry:
 
to each their own but if I am planning a long journey we'll beyond the range of my car I always look for DC charging with a good amount of chargers rather than a small handful of super fast ones anyway. admittedly I am biased as my car only chargers at 100kw anyway (and 100kw is about as genuine as the alleged range of it as well)

but even if my car supported the fastest charging available personally I would still look for large numbers of charge points rather than a couple of mega fast ones.
choice is good I guess but the really big numbers sounds almost like willy waving to me .
