EV general discussion

Out of those the only one I'd feel would be a benefit is the HUD.

After a year of no buttons, i don't really see what people miss. How often are you changing the temperature in the car? I've also grown to prefer not having an instrument cluster in front of the wheel so I can see more of the road. But I appreciate not everyone prefers it that way
The whole forward / backward / park is a nightmare IME from driving one

I miss my HUD when I drive our kona, much nicer to always have the Speedo floating in front of me with all the cameras around these days

It auto selects so it's not really an issue now (you do have to keep an eye on it though). I don't really touch the screen that much, and you still have some controls on the wheel for various things. As someone who always liked physical buttons (and I still do), it's something I've quickly adapted to.

Yeah, I think I only have to correct it occasionally. Mostly at work it thinks I should reverse out of a space when I’d prefer to drive out of

But there’s nothing that I think could be easier achieved with a buttons than the touch screen. Which I think is a testament to how well they’ve designed the UI.

Though, putting the glovebox behind a button is silly. Though, I don’t I ever leave things in there.

Agreed once set the climate is forgotten even the defrost setting is redundant with preconditioning. But how is it different in a Tesla without a cluster in front as in the i4 it is slightly below the lower windscreen line anyway. The centre one in a Tesla is actually slightly above, https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_th/GUID-A5F2B9D0-E7C8-40F5-9642-58F3657B123E.html but again it is just about personal preferences and what you've been used to.
But as for a BMW having everything as an option, a argument about german cars as old as the hills, that has always been true if you buy new but who does? Mine was 5 months old when I purchased and has all the options.

The 'First Edition' is £57k, but this has a few options. I've seen the base price mentioned at £53k, which sounds about right.

Would have been great if they could have delivered it under £50k, avoiding the luxury car tax too. That'll be stacked with the 3p per mile tax from April 2028, which will further annoy everyone. Assuming that goes ahead.

Yeah they'll stick a massive 108.7kWh battery in it that you'll need 1% of the time, but you'll have to buy the 'i3 M50 Tech Comfort Sport M Competition Visibility Premium Executive' version if you want indications, air vents, and seats that move backwards and forwards. :p

Idk I adjust mine between 19 and 22 quite often but I guess it depends on solar gain and I don't like it being noisy on the fan sometimes.

Just had the Id.4 1st MoT done after c14 months of ownership. I took a while to warm to this car as the ride was so different to my VW Passat with it's comfy, barge like ride. It's an SUV with a heavy battery and 20" wheels. Fine on the motorway. Lumpy on UK rural roads. However, I'm now appreciative of it and importantly it's very frugal to run.

The economics of it over c14,000 miles are quite compelling. Paid £22k for it when it had 9k miles and Motorway suggests its potentially worth over £19k now which seems slightly unbelievable as you seldom win on residual values. I reckon we've averaged 3.8miles per kwh and 95% home charging so approximately £350 in electricity so it's about 2.8p/mile. When the Mrs had a Qashqai it was more like 16p/mile.

Still on the original set of tyres and they have between 40 and 50% tread so possible to eek out another 10,000 miles maybe which is a relief as 20" tyres aint cheap.
People complain about the software on these cars and it's not without the odd glitch but to be fair we haven't had many issues and certainly nothing that required any remediation. The build quality is not what I expect from a VW. It's cheap in places but importantly the seats are very good and it has a ton of space. It's not a car you could fall in love with but it's pretty good at most things. Went a road trip on Monday Tuesday and full charge showed over 300 miles of range which at 4.4miles/kwh in the summer heat we were easily achieving the range.

Overall, I'd say we are pretty happy with this car. The next wave of EVs will no doubt emerge over the next 2/3 years but the ID.4 is still quite a good proposition in terms of overall value. I'd only swap it for something like an ix3 but they are crazy money and will be for a while.

Trip completed. Managed 3mi/kWh on both legs. Covered a total of 214.

Started with 95% and returned today on 24% and 81 miles remaining.

I like the iX and the way electric is effortlessly smooth. For a lot of the journey I used ACC which did a really good job. My only sticking point is the seat comfort level - when I'm sat in the seat it feels like the weight is in my lower back. Previously in my A4 (and in my current Z4) I feel a lot more weight is taken by my mid/upper back which spares my lower back. It's not the worst, but it's a fly in the ointment.

So after a few weeks and a longer drive under the belt, here are some of my thoughts.

The good:
  • Lovely spacious and airy interior. My wife commented on having quite a bit more space around her and being able to sit in various positions not possible in our previous car. My son loves the rear space all to himself.
  • The drive is effortless with so much torque and power available. No gear box makes for a very smooth experience.
  • Tech is at a good level and not left me wanting for anything extra. ACC is very good and makes longer drives a breeze.
  • With the higher seating position and plenty of space, visibility of the road is excellent.
  • Loving the EVness. Being able to run the aircon anytime, charge at home for 5p/kWh and a fan of the regen braking.
  • Colour combination is spot on. Most seem to be black with black interior.
The okay:
  • Boot space is obviously a downgrade from the A4 avant, but we managed to fit everything in for our annual centre Parcs trip.
  • Ride quality is a mixed bag. It feels comfortable the majority of the time but at times it can get a bit jiggly, which I've put down to the weight being a bit much for the suspension over undulating surfaces. Unfortunately I messed up with the spec here, I assumed it had rear steering and air suspension, certainly it was listed as having the Dynamic Pro Pack. However after getting the car and checking it more thoroughly it appears at this age, due to parts shortages, some of the components of the pack were deleted by BMW.
  • Looks. I'm fond of how it looks, except the side profile which doesn't do anything for me.
  • Can't turn off comfort access for the steering wheel (I think it can be coded out). I don't need to get into the car and wait for the steering wheel to come out to my saved position. You can turn off the seat but not the steering wheel from the settings.
The not so good:
  • Seat comfort. Still struggling with this one. The lack of thigh bolsters means my leg goes a bit wider than I'm used to, making my back less stable. They fixed this in the LCI it seems. Also due to being an SUV the seating position requires you to be more upright, whereas I'm used to sitting back more with weight onto my mid/upper back. This results in more weight on my lower back. The adjustable lumbar hasn't helped so far.
  • Insurance. Group 50, enough said.
  • Without rear steering the turning circle and manoeuvrability is pants at low speeds.
  • A rattle from behind the driving position, which I've not be able to find yet. The drivers footrest creaks loudly if you put too much pressure on it.

Update. It wouldn't be a LiE purchase without a little complication.

The seat comfort is unfortunately a deal breaker for me and the wife. This being our first SUV we thought it was something that was just an adjustment period. The seats in the iX combined with the driving position cause me a lot of lower back discomfort which I cannot push through. So we went back to the drawing board.

We like a lot about the car but decided an SUV isn't for us, we wanted some more familiar. So sticking with BMW since we really like a lot about their EVs and excluding their SUVs we found ourselves looking at the i5. Similar in many ways to the iX but in a different package.

Finding an i5 that had the spec was little tricky, as most are clearly ex company cars with very little options. There also aren't that many close by and traveling too far wasn't an option.

Yesterday we visited North Oxford BMW to take out an i5 M60 in Oxide Grey. After an extended test drive we both agreed it was the replacement for the iX. Seating position was more traditional and it has thigh bolsters along with extending under thigh support, which the iX doesn't have either. The car itself has all the options we want, except pano roof, but that we decided was an acceptable compromise.

The drive was excellent. The power and acceleration was something else, with 600bhp and that EV torque. Handling was leagues better than the iX and the suspension made for a more comfortable ride. The iX really needs that air suspension. A much more handsome car compared to the iX.

Hoping to pick it up next week after they sort a few bits.

Assuming you couldn't reject the iX then if just uncomfortable, or did you make something up to allow them to take it back?

Only 4 packs, it'll be missing those indicators again! :p

I couldn't reject it no, but I did start the ball rolling quite quickly with them so the hit wasn't too bad.
