EV general discussion

sorry to be job's comforter .. but, at a minimum every child unwrapping their new iphone expects a cable and batteries included.

I guess that precludes you from an iphone too then innit.

How much is a granny charger anyway? I'll get one just to stick under the boot floor.

That doesn't work.... When you buy an EV you get batteries and a charging cable which plugs into an industry recognised standard socket, much like the USB C cable that comes with an iPhone. You have to buy the USB charging plug on top if you want to plug it into a 3 pin socket.......

Can't expect it to make sense all the time... :D

Not sure as my Polestar 2 came with one in 2023 before everyone stopped it. I would also get a heavy duty extension cable of 10m length or so to make it usable.

I’ve used one of these for 3 years now as there’s never a 3 pin plug near enough to the car, and as long as you reduce the current below 10 amps you’ll be fine.

It’s handy when you have a couple of hours free electric but 2 EV’s in the household - every penny counts! :D

Can you tell the car to do this? That was actually another one of my questions - I'd imagine that some older leccy installations would struggle / trip / catch fire with an extended period of EV charging.

I don’t know about Tesla - Polestar allowed you to control all AC charging current from 32 down to 6 amps, and the EQC had set levels to choose from.

The EQE doesn’t let you do anything with it as far as I can tell!

I managed to pick up a genuine Polestar charger on eBay for £80 which I thought was good! Just in case.

Looking at £100 - £150 for a "new" used Tesla charger on ebay. "Up to 10 miles of range an hour" - so let's call it 6 (weather, current limiting, etc). That means for 30 miles of range, I'd need five hours of charging. That's a lot of tea & biscuits, if there's even a charger within 30 miles.

I'm venturing in to jpaul territory with my musing now though, I can feel the fog of decision paralysis settling in.

just saying - but I'd consider an overspecced 20A cable for the lower resistance/drop - that's what I made up for 20M extension lead for 3KW pressure washer,
and internal house extension leads, bought a reel.

Are you thinking about pick up? You'll have enough charge to get to a rapid charger
