Looking at £100 - £150 for a "new" used Tesla charger on ebay. "Up to 10 miles of range an hour" - so let's call it 6 (weather, current limiting, etc). That means for 30 miles of range, I'd need five hours of charging. That's a lot of tea & biscuits, if there's even a charger within 30 miles.

I'm venturing in to jpaul territory with my musing now though, I can feel the fog of decision paralysis settling in.

Where would you plug that in though? Plug rapid far easier. Beyond the native Tesla nav/charging Download Zap Map as a starter point for charging, super useful.

just saying - but I'd consider an overspecced 20A cable for the lower resistance/drop - that's what I made up for 20M extension lead for 3KW pressure washer,
and internal house extension leads, bought a reel.
The mechanical link between plug socket is the issue, nothing to do with the cable size.

I think I'm getting closer to 2 in the Abarth :D

It's a lot of fun though.

I think that's part of my problem.
You don't buy a performance car to worry about fuel consumption no matter the fuel type, it does affect how you drive it though when a tank full costs near £100, but with a charge costing less than a pint the poor little Abarth is getting used and abused :D

Yup mine was 3-4 when it was warmer now seeing 1.5-2 absolutely terrible terrible drop off in the Abarth, I'm not even having much fun in it as roads are grim :( though it does have good ability in these conditions.

Came in the morning full Eco mode and just nudged over 2.... it is still cheap to run of course so it doesn't really matter but the range drop off is tragic particularly when I can't always get the charger. Fortunately I do very little miles.

I was thinking I could pick up a Super N which has half the range for the potter about car but if it has similar issues is heavy traffic etc its range would not do for more than a potter to the shops.

Doesn't it just, the grip in the wet is quite something. It's probably going to end up in a hedge at some point.
The brakes are ludicrous, I'm sure I detatched a retina the first time I used them in anger :D

Conversely I find the brakes a bit of a weak point on the road, they work but feedback is a bit wooly especially cold, it did improve after a track stint just not very good cold, which is where they are most of the time, I jump in my Volvo and almost cause an injury with the amount of braking on inital bite that can do with same pedal pressure.

A pad change would likely improve things.

I’ve never had to use it in anger because im low on charge - it’s there should I be staying at my parents house for a few days and I can plug in there for example, or when I was staying at a work-funded property during the week…

It’s just nice to have - like a jerry can of fuel for extreme emergencies.

I'd assumed diddums would sign up for IOG to get cheaper electricity for the rest of the house, so running a granny out to the car on the drive was useful
(remembering pictures he'd show of garage but maybe that was previous place)

I suppose it depends on what you're coming from.
The car the Abarth has replaced was a worn out 20 year old 150k+ x type diesel estate, a shopping trolley with four good wheels would have seemed like an improvement :D

Tbh I don't even keep my granny charger (now in the loft) and my type 2 cable (under the stairs) in the car anymore. More weight for zero use lol.

Not sure as my Polestar 2 came with one in 2023 before everyone stopped it. I would also get a heavy duty extension cable of 10m length or so to make it usable.

I’ve used one of these for 3 years now as there’s never a 3 pin plug near enough to the car, and as long as you reduce the current below 10 amps you’ll be fine.

It’s handy when you have a couple of hours free electric but 2 EV’s in the household - every penny counts! :D

My 2023 p2 came with one….

BMW lets you configure from 6-32A, my granny charger lets me set 6, 10 or 13A i usually set mine at 6A. Has only been used a few times when we moved house in August and we could leave the cars plugged in for a long period of time, even overnight was enough to give you an ok charge for local travel. The car should come charged enough to easily get you to a fast charging location if you check on ZapMap.

My 2024/25 BMW i5 didn't come with a granny charger (3P>T2) just a T2/T2 cable for untethered chargers, my bro-in-law got me one as a present from "Ring" where he works.

Before I got mine I was genuinely annoyed about the lack of included granny charger, 4 months on there has not been one time I would have found a use for it. I wouldn't bother unless you dont or cant have a home charger installed!

That bottom sentence is me. We only ordered an EV because my wife can charge for free at work.

Plus I'd rather just have one tbh. The amount of space it takes up vs the amount of faff I could be in without one is absolutely worth it.

Luckily we get free charging at the wife's work as well, they have 3phase 11kw chargers which sweetens it even more!

I wonder how much longer they will exist though as they have 12 of them and they are all in use all day :)
