EV general discussion

Any recommendations for a 12v battery compact jump pack. If anyone is going to sit and drain the 12v battery while waiting for my son at some sports event it's my wife.

I showed her how to switch to utility mode but I may as well have spoken in Chinese.

As a tesla driver since 2021, correct If if wrong but it doesn't work like that. The main batt will keep the other batts running fine. You wont make the car flat if you are in it using the readio or lights whatever. It's not like the olden days. I've sat waiting at sports fields for hours over the years it's been fine.

I'm going for a couple of M3 test drives this saturday to see if there's upgrade potential from 2021 facelift M3 AWD LR.

I'm in 2 minds about the RWD premium vs the AWD premium. The range, supposed 'nicer driving/steering' of the RWD sounds very appealing. But the AWD and extra speed (plus better sound) may swing it toward this model instead atthe expense of 50 quote miles range. Coming from a AWD LR I'm keen to experience the suspension improvements, handling and judge whether the RWD feels as punchy as the AWD.

anyone done this move before or anything I should check on the test drives . It seems the RWD is more car than I need, but is this a downgrade from current 71 plate AWD LR? who knows.

i've had a highland LR AWD loaner for 48 hours whilst my car (2022 LR AWD) was in for servicing. the highland is a big step up in materials, build quality, noise insulation and ride quality

The ride in my Tesla AWD LR (18") is imo frankly awful. It's so bad I wouldn't actually daily drive it unless I could upgrade the suspension. The missus drives it, she doesn't mind. I use an ioniq SE and its street ahead of the tesla for ride quality. The Tesla is BY FAR the worst riding car I ever driven. My BMW E89 Z4 rides better, by a long shot, I'm not even exaggerating, deadly serious. The tesla is ok on motorway but for 30-40mph local roads it's just shoogly and annoying.

So I am EXTREMELY interested in the ride quality improvements and will be paying close attention to this.

I had a hatch.

In 20 months it spent more than 250 in a garage.

It’s still there. Hasn’t been fixed. They can’t. I gave the keys back and stopped paying.

VW aren’t interested in any way. Last I was told, there are no qualified technicians to diagnose and work on complex EV issues in the UK.

All diagnostics are done online remotely with Germany.

Wouldn’t go near it. It’s the reason for my name :P

Well that's sorted that then, thanks! I'd seen a fair bit of feedback online with plenty of people having software issues but nothing quite as bad as that.

Actually now I think about it I remember reading some of your comments, I should have just used search.. doh. Sorry you've had so many issues.

Will investigate some other options like the Skoda's, Polestar's posted by others. Thanks all.

you said no chinese?

That's not what my manual says for utility mode:

Utility Mode on the Hyundai Kona Electric allows the main high-voltage traction battery to power all electronic accessories, heating, air conditioning, and USB ports while the vehicle is parked, preventing the 12V battery from draining.

I suspect it's similar to my e-niro, where unless the car is on, it WILL drain the 12v battery to the point you get stuck...

Had an amusing one earlier.

Was faffing about on the touchscreen to change music sources and my BMW warned me not to avert my gaze from the road...

Dont put everything behind a bloody touchscreen then!

Why didn't you just use the voice command to change it?

The new Polestar 4 SUV has peaked my interest, decent range and 2000kg towing capacity.

Meh id give owner forums a read. Software sounds very buggy

I'm not sure I can stomach reading an EV forum, this thread is bad enough at times.
I have the facelift(2024) polestar 2 and it’s been excellent, good range and efficiency from it (230wH per mile in summer) and haven’t had any problems with the software

tried a model 3 RWD premium and MYAWD . the model 3 was very nice the ride and comfort was very good indeed. i’m sold. massive massive improvement. also its on 19s might be better still on 18”

felt a little floaty over crests here and there, some mud flap scrapery but overall no headbanging . thumbsup

rwd not as punchy as my awd 3

model Y awd with 20’s

ride better than my 71 M3 but still suffers for some jiggle maybe its the 20’s maybe its just it being a Y . but no good for me . the difference is quite substantial. not a fan over the seat position tall windows or dash the feels for away. its reminiscent of driving a transit custom.

but the power was nice. i think if you are familiar with awd tesla you can go back to 2wd. didnt notice much difference in the sound system.

looks like model 3 wont get swing fan unless they bring an update out.

so the new M3 awd is very decent and clearly better than model y and older m3 awd for al the things that matter to me.

didn’t see/hear much difference in audio capabilities.

and grok is nice too.
