Even Augustus Gloop ain't safe (Dahl being censored)

If you're reading them the books then yes perhaps they're too young. But also if they can't read I doubt they'll understand the nuances anyway.

If they're 10+ reading these books I don't think there's any issue there at all. At least you're reading your kids books! That's a lot more than many people do. :)
Well then it is an irrelevance. Remove the unnecessary themes and it is job done?

No the current dystopia is continuing because we are far more concerned about ******** like this than facing the real issues in the world. Companies and governments have been manipulating the population for years into looking at the small things so they never look at the bigger ones. Look at all these super important issues but don't look too deeply into the wealth divide or the fact that corporations run the world and are quickly selling the future of the human race for ever more ridiculous shareholder profits.

The reason people get annoyed by this crap is because its entirely unnecessary and supports this dumb idea that language is the root of all evil and that if we can get rid of all the mean words the world will stop being such a ******* horrible place. Its selling the idea that saying the right things and using the right language make you a good person rather than, you know, being a good person who can think for themselves and have a moral code without being spoon fed it.

Its selling the idea that when you don't like something or you disagree with it you should force your views on others.
You think these people who tweak books to represent modern values and trends is more of a time waste than a bunch of gammons whinging on OCUK about people doing the job they're paid for?

No because when they're old enough why shouldn't they understand how literature has evolved and chance, and the society in which they currently live is now very different. Reading through the lens of the 18th/19th/20th century is not a bad thing. Heck Mark Twain had the "n word" riddled in his books - it was part of the time - does it make it right? No. Is it important for it to be read in the context in which it was written? Yes!

I personally feel this piece of work is a solution looking for a problem to solve....

I mean I'm not "upset" or wound up... I just find it a little sad that we've got to this state of affairs.

I think you are focussing in a little hard on this particular example. The issue is that instead of tackling the big issue we are messing about with stupid ones. And I wouldn't say that many of these changes do reflect "modern values". They reflect the thoughts of a very small subset of people who spend a large amount of their time looking at the world through a very distorted lens. As the saying goes, when the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. If you look for racist, bigotry or language that could possibly be negatively interpreted, you will find it everywhere. That doesn't mean you are right, it just means you are looking for it.

Well you are arguing for it to not evolve, so what would there be to understand.

Dunno why they can't just label this the "classic edition" or something and write a new series, with the same / similar character and stories for the newer generation. That way we get the old school version, the new woke version and the kids can decide for themselves which one is better.

Always will get this though. Modern Society knows best right?

I don't think it does in everything - but it seems to be a big enough issue that they want to rewrite classical books.

This is what I suggested - have 2 editions, give people a choice and then everyone is happy.

That's too logical. The only sensible option is to erase all materials that do not comply.

Willy Wonka is now gaslighting people re: how the Oompa-Loompa tribe got to his factory instead of admitting to his crimes, surely that's worse? :D

I guess that even trivial things will be censored these days is a good reason to keep hold of physical media.

I'm not allowed to enjoy chitty chitty bang bang because they won't write out the petrol powered car? Why are you such a monster?
Because I like to scare kids.

I think you get my point, but whilst we may not be on the same POV/perspective on this I get why we need to modernise things but it makes me uncomfortable retrospectively editing literature for a modern agenda. Maybe I'm wrong but I can cope with being wrong on this. :)

In Swifts travels they had the big enders and the little enders. They had a war. All over which end to crack open your boiled egg.

It often reminds me of this forum and human society.

Is it just me or does the new version sound really really like a modern PR bollocksy spin on the first column.

"We don't call them concentration camps, we call them re-education camps".

"Right, but they are just the same thing?".

"Oh yes, very much so but this sounds better".

Which end is correct though?

Personally, I think the edits changes the message considerably.

It's gone from Wonka taking them, to them agreeing to come. It changes this from it being involuntary to voluntary.

I'm probably over-analysing this...
