Everquest the Original

Well here is my EQ story anyway. . .

Bought EverQuest in July 1999, started off on Rallos Zek where I stayed over a year got fed up of the PK side of things, found a few british players & we moved to Morell-Thule server in year 2000 in which I created a guild called "United Kingdoms" & combined with a guild called "Legions of Valhalla".

Upon the creation of Antonius Bayle Server in 2001, 4 of us moved there & I created U.K there gathering a few low levels & started from scratch, the guild is still running now with well over 70 members, I still play the game as a Level 80 Iksar Beastlord which I created in 2002 when the Beastlord class was made available with Shadows of Luclin Expansion.

I have tried EQ II, WoW, Vanguard for about a month each & they are all too easy compared to the original EverQuest, people who tried Lord of the Rings Online have said the same thing.

Age of Conan does look appealing especially the combat system but I wont be trying it as it lacks orcs, elves, trolls, dwarves etc.

My best days were in UK. I played as an Enchanter then as a Beastlord. 72 people raids were awesome. :p

Cazic Thule I was in Hawk Lords and played with an Enchanter I got to 59, Necro to 51 and a Druid to 45?

Then on AB I was in "Innit" lol and mostly played my Wizard Murdokio who was 60 ... . Raging Fury oooo how I had agro with them....thought they were all frenchies? We always seemed to be in direct competition with them.

You guys are right the the best thing about it was how it was an "adventure" where there were real risks and no one held your hand. Grrrr

EQ was a continual adventure of discovery. It's staggering how many layers there were to it.

You might prefer another MMO because it does XYZ better than EQ1, and that's fair enough, EQ wasn't perfect. But there's one unrefutable, undeniable fact about EQ1 that puts it leagues above other MMO's.

EQ1 has the best dungeons in any game, MMO or otherwise.

Sebilis, Guk, Plane of Mischief, Crystal Caverns, Blackburrow, Temple of Veeshan, Plane of Fear, Howling Stones, The Hole, Veksar, Kaesora (and i haven't even scratched the surface).

These dungeons were not designed to accomodate players. They were desgined to be areas where mobs lived their lives. YOU were an intruder. YOU were not welcome. These were real dungeons, with traps and false walls, where the entrance was not always the exit, where some rooms were topsey turvey, where you couldn't always evac from, where multiple species of lifeforms existed and you could level 30 times. Mini-communities existed in these dungeons, and you'd see familiar faces every night.

How cool was it to see upon entering Plane of Fear the message: "It begins to rain blood".

 Oh yeah.

You knew you were getting into something that perhaps was a little over your head. If you and your raid didn't bring your A-game to Fear you were gonna get owned, big time. But if you DID bring your A-game, then you not only reaped the rewards, you were the talk of the server. Never has a dungeon been so aptly named as the Plane of Fear.

Then on AB I was in "Innit" lol and mostly played my Wizard Murdokio who was 60 ... . Raging Fury oooo how I had agro with them....thought they were all frenchies? We always seemed to be in direct competition with them.

You thinking of Justice Divine?

I was only a lowbie when JD were on the server but I remember the amount of hate they got from everyone else on the server :p

Ah yeah my mistake it was JD....argh how I literally HATED them - they did not play by the rules at all.

Spirity: your so right and your post makes me miss it even more. :( It really was about community in EQ and thats definatly something that lacks in the new MMO's :(

I do miss the raiding, something always happened when they turn up :p, they would never worry about rotation and that was before POP as i cannot remember them that much after.

I never knew there was another United Kingdoms Guild on a different server! We had a United Kingdoms guild on Bristlebane since the game was released which went on till 4-5 expansions down the road.

I played with the UK guild till Kunark and the joined a raiding guild called Arch Overseers. Many good memories and lost hours of sleep and social life, still good friends and casual game with both guilds now and then so we can remember the good old days.

Sadly I'd never have enough time to play like that again and I'm not sure I'd want to, no game has come close to giving me the experiances EQ has (and I played UO for 2 years before EQ)

Few screen shots of the good-o-days for memories.....

Our first Avatar of War kill

First time we cleared....some zone I can't remember the name of! Took about 6months to get to the zone and the amount of keys needed, you won't find a game that takes that long again!

The famous Ogre Wall for killing Tunare! I've never seen such a stupid idea work so well.

Likewise, played for as part of United Kingdoms on Bristlebane for a few years having started originaly as part of Unseen University on the same server from April 99 (and yes, we had approval from TP allowing us to use the name believe it or not).

Even dabbled with the Beta before they switched from low res software only graphics to the new fangled 3D accelerated graphics using Glide and the Voodoo cards....

Some of the best and worst gaming days ever....

Vex Thal, as a wizard I loved that zone because you went out of mana after before the mobs got to 70% health and you got to annoy the necros for taps. I was on the Venril Sathir then AB server, I wish I had the time to commit to go back to the game but I worry it wouldn't have the same sense of wonder and nostalgia.

I remember UK and AO. I was in Black Thorn and we used to have a regular duelling night with AO in Lake Rathe arena. Was just for fun, our guilds had a good relationship but AO usually creamed us.

Vex Thall :)

I miss the EQ1 days too. I was on Tallon Zek. Only ever reached 63 so my fond memories of raids were mainly Kael and ToV but I still loved it. It really felt like an accomplishment to level up, and it took real devotion to get through the hell levels. I'd be desperately hoping for a good group to help me along the way, as the blue line slowly increased to another yellow bub.
Some great mini communities there, often meet up with the same people, always in the same dungeons.
The annoyance at dying (especially if it was someone in the group's fault) and losing exp.

I miss it :( Got no regrets for how much time it took up.
I play WoW every now and then and it's really not the same for me, far too easy to level and lacking in community. Probably because it's so easy to solo and there's no real punishment for dying.

Vex Thall, thats it!

I agree Haly, everything since EQ has just seemed so easy. I do kind of miss the 3 hour corpse recovery effort or being killed by Trakkanon and having to work you're way down to him again to recover you're corpse and have another shot.

Sadly with the amount of games out at the moment and the obvious need for casual gaming I don't think we will ever come across another EQ or if we do I can’t see the same amount of people ever starting it with the choice out there.

Played on Erollisi Marr, was a Rogue in a european end game guild called Divine Grace and we always compeated with the top american guild for contested spawns. No MMO I have played compares to EQ. They are all geared for casual players with so much focus on soloable content that it makes the fact it is MMO pointless. I miss shouting for groups and getting the best camp spots in Bastion of Thunder and Plane of Fire quad kiting :)

I played from Kunark to Gates of Discord and loved every minute, had to stop playing eventually cos it was my life and I had a girlfriend and studies to focus on instead.

Started playing EQ1 the day it came out and thereon for yrs. Dark Elf Necro, Sarnak Monk, and a Conjuror, how I loved those little pets.

It totally took my life away.

Yes as stated in a previous post the Dungeons were amazing, I particually hated Lower Guk.

Anyone remember camping for JBoots, what a nightmare:D

Still playing EQ1 here, tried pretty much every other mmorpg thats been released since and I cant find anything that gives me the same buzz.

Started on Tunare in March 2000 (Ronin --> Tide --> Aurora Polaris --> Anthem)

Now living on AB in Ancient Dominion.

Makes me wonder if we're mildly masochistic for enjoying such suffering :D For me though, I think it helped the level of satisfaction when achieving something though :)

I'm tempted to restart my subscription for a bit but I bet it's not the same :(
