Everquest the Original

Makes me wonder if we're mildly masochistic for enjoying such suffering :D For me though, I think it helped the level of satisfaction when achieving something though :)

I'm tempted to restart my subscription for a bit but I bet it's not the same :(

Don't do it, save the memories! I started playing when they released the two new servers a year or two ago where you all started from level 1 with the original game only and until the content was unlocked (ie Vox and Nagafen were killed) you couldn't move onto the next expansion, ended up stopping at about level 25 as I couldn't keep up with everyone else and just got left behind, would have been magical to go do all the end game content again once more but sadly Real Life does not allow. Wonder how far they got.

My real life gets in the way more than it used to :(
Guess it was all a matter of good timing with EQ1.

Funnily enough I went onto Bristlebane server around year 2000, the guild recruiter for UK on their was a Barbarian female I remember that, they just didnt seem interested enough in wanting me as a member, so I thought right! I'll go create United Kingdoms elsewhere - guild still running on Antonius Bayle. :)
Nice Pics. I recognise a lot of the names.

My 'Chanter was Ginja & Beasty was Dyoneseus. Getting to Plane of Earth was one of the last things I remember doing.
I remember you, well this is Carnivac - Iksar Beastlord. :)

a lot of retired members still frequent the new forums, check out: http://uk-ab.net/forums/index.php - United Kingdoms - Antonius Bayle Server. :)

I was on Cazic Thule - way back in the days. I remember taking my time levelling my ranger and only hit 50 the night before Kunark was released :D by then I had an enchanter only a couple of levels behind. I foolishly decided to stick with the Ranger for Kunark and beyond. I left EQ a couple of months after Velious came out and came back for a couple months about two years later. I still know some folk who raid in EQ now.

OMG the hate I have for Lower Guk after camping there for my Dark Elf illusion mask :)

Hehe, yeah.

Loot was one of the coolest things about eq (besides the dreadful spawn times on rare mobs). Illusion masks, clicky invis/lev/sow etc. And ever gear upgrade meant something. You really lusted after fbss/schw, jboots, gbs, amulet of necropotence etc. Not only that, but you could tell just by looking at someone the name of the items they were wearing, and what zone they dropped in. Cobalt ***!

And what about having a full set of blue diamond resist gear especially for raiding? I always thought that was cool, that you had to selectively have a seperate set of equipment in the bank.

There was no 70ac, 150hp and 250 to all resists gear dropping at lvl10. Gear was a slow ascension, starting off with crafted cloth, bronze, fine steel and then the stat stuff started dropping with +25hp. And because the stats on EQ items were relatively small, they were easily memorised. I could reel off nearly every gear upgrade I got my Druid from lvl10 to 50. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of even one item I ever wore in EQ2 and WoW, much less tell you the stats.

In EQ1, your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries. In recent games, you're virtually born into royalty (wearing the finest leather, with magic weapons out the wazoo). So at lvl 50, when you look back to when you were a newbie, you really felt like you'd been on a journey.

I always loved the scale of the game. Travelling from Freeport to Qeynos was a long and dangerous walk & it got even longer if you needed to wait for the boat to visit butherblock. a lot of MMO's these days make travel too fast, which makes the game worlds seem so much smaller :(

Yeah, it's a valid point.

A lot of people complain if they can't meet up with their friends within 15mins or so. And while I understand this need, sometimes when a game panders to a majority, the core of the game is diminished a little.

If I were to use a music analogy, think Nirvana, then think Creed. There are better examples, but you get my drift.

I like EQ1's way of handling travel. Wizzy and Druid ports meant that not many had access to fast travel, but you could have access to it if you wanted. Again, like so many of EQ1's mechanics, you needed to rely on the help of others. Which was a great thing. Nowadays, nobody stands at a dock and yells "hurry up, boat's here!". They don't need to, they just click on an npc and off they go. The sense of community is lost because you put in a mechanic that makes the player self sufficient.

That's progress. But I think we've lost more than we've gained.

EQ1 was my first MMO experience, i loved how difficult it was. Simple things like needing a torch to see in the dark, needing to bring food and drink with you, getting encumbered from carrying too much, having to level your sense direction just so you know which direction you are looking in, dying and spending hours trying to find your corpse while not getting owned by another mob, mobs that don't stop chasing you and trains like you've never seen.

I played on the progression server when it came out a year or 2 ago which basically starts with just 1 expansion and new ones gradually get unlocked. Had to stop as at the time i couldn't put the time in, its a shame as i then lost out on all the good bits.

As much as i loved it though DAoC still holds my heart ;).

I miss the market square in north freeport. Auction houses were the worst thing ever to happen to an mmo, just another mechanism to separate the the players from each other.

I used to love hanging around in front of the bank, listening to people shouting out what they had for sale. You got to haggle with people, and more importantly got to know people.

I remember Planes of Power era being my favourite expansion. Even if the major targets were already claimed, you could still raid previous expansions for semi-decent gear.

Planes of Power era is the first time I got in a decentish guild that was able to raid properly. So I was able to climb the gear to success ratio ladder.

The contested raid mob races were great fun. I never took it too seriously if we lost a race, as there was always other content available. But it was also fun beating some of the less liked rival guilds, e.g. Tight Underpants and D'****** (Antonius Bayle server)

Later expansions started to destroyed the game for me. Played Gates of Discord, but didn't progress that far in. Also brought Omens of War, but my Everquest days were number by then.

Anyone still got their Magelo profile links?

Edit: Seems Magelo have got rid of user background images. Linky

To be fair with that sort of ego and attitude they were probably doing their job right....

I am a nice person honest. :) I was polite etc, but I didnt get a positive welcome attitude, didnt feel as though anyone was interested in having a new member to their european guild on a U.S server for people in the UK.

I do think you need somewhat of an ego & attitude, ambition towards EQ otherwise you wont get anywhere & guilds eventually disapear, my UK on AB Server been going strong for around 8 years now, so it all worked out for the best.

Starting AoC brought back allot of memories of EQ, not knowing where to go, not knowing the best route to level up and having a ton of sites and maps out there to go by. Which I think was the worst thing to MMO gaming out there really.

I played a Shaman (Walliss) and Rogue (ghiest) in Everquest, was on the Cazic thule server till AB opened up but really didn't like what EQ became when SoL was released really, Scars of velious was it's prime for me. I played in a few guilds on AB but it just wasn't the same as the old days, everyone was obsessed with winning at any costs rather than having a laugh.

And hello Ben (shador) how's university going mate?

I installed/patched the 'play the Fae' trail. If i want to reopen one of my old accounts do i have to reinstall my original disks or can i just go straight in via the trail?
