Everyone is Baldrick now - environment secretary suggests we eat turnips

Whilst I despise Coffey, eating in season fruit and veg is not a terrible idea.
I was going to poke holes in this but in reality you could eat a pretty balanced and mixed diet including only U.K. winter veg: usual root veg, broccoli, kale, sprouts, leek, chard etc. It’s not as limited as I thought it might be.

Just a shame the government has decimated the U.K. farming industry and made it impossible to get temporary workers in.

Turnips and carrots in a beef casserole with potatoes and dumplings. The whole cooked in a slow cooker for little more than the power usage of a light bulb.

What is not to like?
It's the 21st century man, we shouldn't be boiling our vegetables and eating stews like our peasant ancestors!!!! "pitchfork.jpg"

It is the height of culinary laziness, a one pot meal that in other cultures may be called a bourgignon. No boiling necessary just a low simmer for about six hours, the meat melts in the mouth and the vegetables are infused with the juices of the meat. Just open the door after work, heat a bowl, cut some bread and grab a fork.

more worrying thing is she could only come up with turnips as an example of a nice/polyvalent UK vegetables ... another minister like the party chairman who makes 19p meals.

People complain they cant get certain veg. The governments response?

Let them eat turnips.

The revolution cant come soon enough.

There is a reason people eat "peasant foods", root vegetables and some meat in the winter months. They have a high calorific value with sugars and fats, keeping the body warm. They are relatively cheap and easy to make. Many European diets comprise winter vegetables, pulses etc., in warm meaty sauces.

Cold meats and salads are for the warm months of the year. Or you can always call Just Eat.

I mean in the winter we make a fair bit of soup that has suede in it which is just a Swedish turnip.

Is that allowed or is that unpatriotic?
