EVGA Pascal cards hotspot problem

I've gone ahead and ordered the thermal pads anyway.

Not decided if i will fit them or not yet though. I'll watch a few videos to judge how tricky it is first.

Looks dead easy.

I'm pretty good at this sort of thing anyway, so I'll probably end up doing it when i have some spare time.

I really don't want a toasted video card and there is no way I'm sending it back to end up with a manky refurb.

This whole scenario is an absolute joke to be honest. I have lost all faith in EVGA. My next card will be a different brand.

The way they are claiming there is no issue and that this is just an option for people who want improved cooling is just offensive.

Quick question here. The problem here is about the VRM temps. Do the temps get 95c+ only when having high sustained usage? Or just in any scenario?

So if I game (not benchmark) normally, without really utilising 99% of the GPU, will that still result in out of spec temps? Or have the reports that we have seen only been under intense load scenarios?

I know the VRMs can get that hot - trying to ascertain the use cases in which they do.

Thanks
JP

I think they only get up to 95c under severe stress tests.

But they are still 30c higher than most other brands even when gaming.

Absolutely no doubt about it theres an issue. And i suspect it will reduce the life span of the card.

Uh oh. Just had my first black screen on my FTW, lasted a good 5 seconds before it came back with a "driver has recovered from an error" etc.

Wonder if the card is about to detonate any time soon.

edit: ok so decide to update the BIOS to the latest. Went to the EVGA site, found the bios revision... check. Check against the s/n on the side of the box (which I still have thank goodness)... check.

Flash the Bios as the instructions say... no errors. Reboot. Oh joy. No fans. Yep they're not spinning at all.

Was the card set to master bios... yes. Did I download update for master bios.. yes, its the only one available for that revision. Its aint working. Check the BIOS revision number in Nvidia CP and GPU Z... yep identifying itself fine. Still not working. Had to switch to slave bios to get the fans spinning again as Afterburner was the only thing stopping my card from frying.

You couldn't make it up.

Hi. Had a similar issue when I tried to flash the new VBIOS. Did not happen when I flashed the first update for Micron memory.

What I found, was my anti-virus programme was blocking the update. as I say, this did not happen with the previous update. So I had to temporarily disable my AV, then run the flash app. Even after a reboot, while the VBIOS showed as having been flashed to the latest. My fans were not spinning at all. After completely shutting down the PC and doing a clean boot, everything appeared fine.

Might be worthwhile trying it again with your AV disabled. Only a suggestion:)

under very good air cooling, VRMs temps can be measured at 63c under Furmark with a vendor or two. not sure what temperature under water though.

maybe this will encourage nvidia to monitor vrm temps like amd

+1

If EVGA admitted there was a issue early on and did a recall then sent everyone a new GPU. I would have been like WOW! EVGA get my money forever, but they didn't so now they last me as a customer. Not happy tbh and wished I went with MSI.

I think most folks (me included) ,will agree with you, to one degree of another.

I suppose you could consider it a "virtual" recall anyway. As they have said that they will replace anyone's card with an updated one, at no cost to the customer. Though obviously (like any manufacturer) it would be most likely with a refurbished card. EVGA are not alone in doing this. And "yes" I can appreciate people not wanting their new card replaced with what in effect is a second hand part. Hence why I shall be keeping mine and just doing the numerous  "optional" fixes (sorry... Updates / improvements).

But I don't think a recall and everyone getting a brand new replacement card was ever going to happen. If only because this would have cost EVGA millions of dollars.

TBC

I have just watched a video on applying the thermal pads and it looks pretty easy.

I will do the install as soon as i get them.

Will hopefully bring the vrm temps down to a slightly safer temperature along with the bios update.

Still not happy with the whole fiasco.

They have lost my custom for sure.

I dont think any company has the balls to do a samsung and take the hit as if its nothing and carry on teasing Note 8 specs with offering discount if they buy it next time around.

having watched the video of pads, might try this with my 900 series card lol

Losing customers will cost them even more money in the long run....

Not too sure about that myself. You may be right. Only time will tell I suppose :)
In my experience, people in general tend to have very short memories.

Let's just hope, that one way or another, everyone can come up with a solution that satisfies them.

I'm a little worried about using my card now.

Wondering if i should suspend using it until i get the thermal pads installed.

May already be damaged, who knows.

Really i dont wish to be without a gpu for weeks exchanging it ( no cross shipping option for me where i live). So i'll probably apply the mod since mine has no whine and i cant be bothered faffing about for a refund and another brand of card. I sure wont be buying a EVGA gpu again however

Sorry for asking a dumb question, is this problem including the GTX 980 EVGA Classified or any GTX EVGA 980?
