EVGA Pascal cards hotspot problem

I have to be honest here and say that the "Thermal pad installation guide" looks like a right bodge job. It's actually laughable due to the fact that the pad inbetween the VRM's and the cooler looks like a god damn blanket. And whats the point because there is no pressure from the actual cooler fins. I don't even have words for the other thermal pads...

On a side note we had yet another 1080 SC go up in smoke at my place work today. This was just at the point of switching the system on with no load. Originally the system come back for black screening/Artifacts.

Anyway this 1070 FTW as been my first ever EVGA product and probably my last. Going to to take mine back in to work and see if i can get it swapped out for something else. I was hoping that EVGA was giong to go with the recall all cards as i heard mentioned at work but they decided that some VBios update was the answer and to ramp fans up which defeats the purpose of these later (And previous generation) cards being quiet under lower loads. And then to expect people to bodge their "premium" products (Premium price...) Pfft, i'm out.

agreed the founders edition or reference cards leave this spot uncovered as well maybe there is higher airflow from the blower

i think the problem is with the original pads they should have just used four big memory sized strips instead of tiny strips and squares

The whole thing is a joke!

They won't even admit there is a problem!

Wish i had just bought the cheapo gainward dual fan. It's a better card than these bodged EVGA cards!

I'm a little worried about using my card now.

Wondering if i should suspend using it until i get the thermal pads installed.

May already be damaged, who knows.

I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm not happy either, but I doubt it will blow up. Cards are not catching fire left and right. It was only a couple cards out of the millions sold

I think most folks (me included) ,will agree with you, to one degree of another.

I suppose you could consider it a "virtual" recall anyway. As they have said that they will replace anyone's card with an updated one, at no cost to the customer. Though obviously (like any manufacturer) it would be most likely with a refurbished card. EVGA are not alone in doing this. And "yes" I can appreciate people not wanting their new card replaced with what in effect is a second hand part. Hence why I shall be keeping mine and just doing the numerous  "optional" fixes (sorry... Updates / improvements).

But I don't think a recall and everyone getting a brand new replacement card was ever going to happen. If only because this would have cost EVGA millions of dollars.

TBC

Agree

May i add and in most cases rma will include REPAIRED cards to be sent back to clients ...Use to work in this type of field there is nothing wrong with this as long as the repair work is done right with the right QA...

I have 1 client who has had his 1080 card for over 2 months and has had enough now and wishes to return the card for a full refund to go with another manufacturer.....

on the grounds of out of spec not what was advertised / poor designed product ...He feels that after waiting over a month to get his 1080 and paying over £650+ and having to mess around like this is unacceptable.

I agree

So if you can advise me Ben@Evga i would appreciate it.

I hope evega starts to get more specific information out on each individual card.

The question this raises for me is when things go wrong having a higher end card that sells in limited numbers seems the worst place to be in terms of information.

At the moment I can see no reason to shell out top dollar and get left in the dark in this sort of situation.

If I had gone with a cheaper card from evega I would not have this problem.

Lesson I am learning from this is going high end is a bad idea. For a graphics card manufacturer that is not a good message to send.

Evega are clearly working hard and this is an ongoing processes so I don't expect things to run completly smoothly. It is a learning curve for evega as well in all this.

The lesson I get at the moment is don't buy uber high end, low volume products, go with higher end volume seller, you will get far better support and information in this situation.

I hope my perspective changes as Evega works its way through and out of this mess.

Just found out about this problem and have asked for the thermal pad kit,.
As I have to replace the thermal paste I would like to put a good one on,any idea what I should get.

It comes included in the kit according to Gamers Nexus.

What fan speed in both rpm and percentage does the new bios give at 70c on a 1080 FTW?

On my top EVGA GTX 1080 SC (in SLi) 70°c gives 68~70% fans speed at reportedly 4400RPM  I don't know if that's a bug, but the card is quite loud at that speed.

That seems pretty high to me. The new curve for the 1070 ftw is only running at around 45% (rather than 30% like it did originally) at 70C. At least that's what it looks like to me after installing the new VBIOS. Though EVGA did say that each fan curve for the different models would be unique (ie. Different). Don't know if any other 1080 owners have tried the new VBIOS yet. Failing that, you could always try a re-flash. I found that this time when trying to flash, that both windows and my AV programming objected and that I ended up have to temporarily disable my AV programming to get it to complete the flash correctly. Even then (as someone else encountered) my fans initially, even after a reboot, were not spinning at all! Had to shut down PC an do a cold boot. Things seemed ok then. Never a dull moment.

It gives me 59 percent fan speed at 1900 rpms.

I have mine on a custom fan curve with fan speeds 10 percent higher than that and I still dont notice the fan speeds noise, but then I have a silent case.

Sounds like there may be some difference in what third party programmes are reporting. Did the bios flash effect the custom profile in anyway? Debating as to if bothering with it given there's a small chance of it going wrong.

Nope I havent noticed any change in the custom profile. I'm not sure these fans go up to 4400rpm, gpuz reports the same values as evga precision x.

How do you do a reflash? Earlier bios? I tried re-doing it with the same one but the updater just hangs at "detecting your hardware..."

I flashed it originally in Safe Mode flashing in Windows is risky...

how long did you wait for for the cold boot? I unplugged it from the mains left it for 10 minutes still not working.

Well actually thats not entirely true the fans start spinning on power on, then windows starts to boot they go off never to start again. I removed Afterburner thinking it might be that but nope still the same. DDU'd the old drivers and installed new gfx drivers.. still nothing.

I'm on the secondary bios at present at least that still works

Hi Sipha

Please see my update post #318 about the updates available to UK customers. Return to the UK address is confirmed Free of Charge now also as you would expect.

If you have not had a response from us please mail me with details. [email protected]

Of course guys here to help any of you that need.

Ben

I tried using the links provided on #318 the guest rma says the s/n is not valid, emailing EVGA via the email link provided has resulted in total silence so far, the only other support offered on the site is the EVGA RMA which doesn't appear to do a thing or a call to some number in the USA.

I'll give it another day to see if I get any email response failing that I will be emailing you I think.
