Excessive packaging

It's so that the warehouse workers can't steal things. It's too big to hide in your shirt or whatever.

If you were going to steal something would you take the time to wrap it up in a box first? "I cant possibly steal this tiny thing as the box i plan on putting it in is too big! Oh no!"

When working in a distribution warehouse the only thing that matters is how many packages you can get out the door. On a packing line everything is done as efficiently as possible and this also means using the same sized box. They'll use bigger boxes because that'll increase the amount of orders that will fit into one. A one size fits all if you will. It saves time if you're sending out thousands of packages everyday. Someone doesn't look at your £1 USB cable and think 'Hmm, what box would be best for this?'. It gets thrown in a box, stuffed with padding and sent through the sealing machine without a second thought.

Amazon has machines which make boxes, seals them and packs them. So it is quicker and easier for them. Size of the product that goes inside doesn't bother them.

Also as well as this lots of smaller products end up in bigger packaging to make it harder for couriers to lose.

We were sending out 100s of small products out a day and many were getting lost by the courier, we upgraded the packaging to be slightly bigger and do not have this problem anymore.

I once ordered a foldable MTB tyre from Germany, and the box it came in was so big, I could sit inside and close the lid. The tyre folded for reference, is about the size of 2 super noodles packets.

It's like the HP servers we have here. They send everything in separate boxes - everything. The paper licence agreements come in packaging big enough to fit another server in.

@Russinating how do you find the battery life on the GoPro? Have been considering one myself.

Many years back I bought a VFD for an early HCPC - but they sent the mains version instead of the 12v one (from Canada). Rather than send it back for replacement, and as I worked in a soldering company at the time I just said to send me the missing components and I'd do the mod.

So they sent 3 surface mount components in a box not much smaller than what reams of A4 come in. The componets were in a tiny bag. Took ages to find them!

We haven't had it long and haven't used it fully but it seems ok. Worse than the Hero and Hero 2 though, hence buying the spare battery for skiing in a week.

Other than that it's an epic piece of kit. The mobile app has completely changed the way you operate it and that alone is worth buying it ahead of the Hero 2.

This is now a 'post pics of small stuff you've got through the post in big boxes'

This was from chain reaction cyces, they have a 'state-of-the-art' packaging system which must only have a certain number of different box sizes. At least the cardboard can be recycled.
