F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Does anyone know how late into the race weekend a team can choose whether they will use KERS?

Given that I expect KERS will use a different floor, gearbox and other components to a non KERS setup, the deadline would be when the cars are actually shipped out to the track, so for Australia, about a week fefore the race?

Oh right. So it's a fairly "all or nothing" type of change. I was thinking they could literally swap in and out the KERS unit in like a couple hours or something. I guess not then!

Are there any rules around this though? From the FIA?

Again, impressive stuff. Surely if they are running low fuel loads, they would be doing short stints. If they are doing similar stints to the other drivers, and still hitting decent times, this is fantastic!
Is that known? Do the timing sites tell you how long each stints are for or is it just the total number of laps they have done in the session?

I am sure they could just remove the KERS unit, but then the weight balance would be completely changed and the handling would be massively affected. They may just be able to turn off the unit without removing it, but then you would have all the disadvantages (weight) without any of the advantages (boost).

I believe that Ross Brawn said something to the effect that the cars are running on race fuel levels, or thereabouts.

To be honest though, the only thing I'd read into the BGP001 performance is that it hasn't fell apart or blown up yet. After Melbourne we'll have an idea how they stack up against the rest of the pack.

I do hope that all the teams are in a position to get up in the points each weekend, rather than BGP and FI as backmarkers all season.

Wow, Buttons over 1 sec quicker as it stands! Fastest time so far I think.

Times are showing the cars all around a second of each other which is promising, but I feel that's been the case at most testing sessions in the past.

Aparently the McLaren team are fustrated with the car at the moment and Spanish fans are giving Hamilton a tough reception as usual.

very good point

I was thinking (on a VERY basic level I admit) that either way there would be ballast &/or KERS....Im wondering if KERS switched off could be considered ballast

Yes I know floor plans change - but from a team's perspective and from saving money only having one floor plan etc , might it have been possible to have engineering the floor plan for 2009 with KERS always in place , while not having so much ballast onboard

I can see there might still be too many disadvantages but if KERS was always there at the design stage - these could be lessened considerably - no?

Even if they are in sponsor-catching mode that is still amazing, he'll be in the 1:18s at this rate.

On a full tank though, according to that dutch site.
"According to the press officer of McLaren runs the team today with full tanks and the team tries not fast time clocks."

remember guys - the new Honda car is meant to be an absolute dog according to earlier ......wisdom in this thread :)

Whatever they are doing - I think that its safe to say that is definitely not the case (with the pace set with 70/80 laps of fuel on board yesterday and today)

They can't be running a back of the grid car, that's almost for certain. Its now just a test as to whether the team can get onto the podeum against some very keen younger drivers in bigger budgeted teams.

just put a bet on button to win the championship each way, i thought it maybe worth a pop at 80/1.

dons flameproof suit.

Good odds, don't blame you.

They're looking good, but they have had a lot longer to try bits out on this new spec, plus Button seems fast when the car is set up right, but his driving style doesnt seem very adaptable since he often drops right off the pace in races after tyre changes etc.

Hope i'm wrong and it's all RBs (both of them?!) wisdom shining through.

That was the problem with their previous cars, they couldn't get heat into the tyres.

I don't want to be branded the typical underdog supporter by the greasy spanish or pizza loving fanboiz, I've always liked Button since he was with BAR.
