F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Shame then that the greasy pizzas are outperforming them every season so far. I don't think anyone can read too much into testing times, however exciting the prospect of having a thoroughly competitive brawn gp is.

Yeh same, would love to see him do well.

I'm sure you would!

They're looking good, but they have had a lot longer to try bits out on this new spec

Why have they had longer - everyone had the same amount of time since the changes where announced for this season

While Honda scrapped dev of last season's car pretty early - Im sure all the teams where developing new parts for this season long before they where tested, not too dis-similarly

Im already on record supporting Button around here - and got shouted down on numerous occasions lol

My point is they scrapped the 08 car pretty quickly and so were focussed on interpreting, developing and testing the 09 pretty early on, resulting in more time than they normally would have. To their credit, i'm sure the team have a lot less resources and people to do this than the big boys have.

Im also going support Button. :)

If he supplies some good fights in the upper mid pack then ill be happy. Be even better if Mclaren aren't that fast and Hamilton and Button have a fight. It may solve the whole "Hamilton would crush Button if they raced for the same team" topic.
Looks like redbull still dont have a great reliability atm. Hopefully that can change.
But yer go Brawn GP. ;):p

Hamilton crashed earlier but is going again now. Look at Schuy taking a look!!

Are there any sponsors lined up for Brawn GP yet? The testing is going so well they're hard to ignore, and although RB has deep pockets they're not that deep surely?

Excuse my ignorance if this has been answered.

afaik they haven't got any sponsors, rumours are the bwin (dutch? betting company) will be a sponsor though...

Testing is usually a decent indication on the most part tbh, and even if the Brawn GP times (especially todays) are low fuel runs they're still impressive, and indicate that they won't be right at the back at least.

McLaren are beginning to worry me now though, consistantly poor on the timesheets and making updates to the rear area that either aren't making a difference or not enough to fix something fundamentally wrong with that car...

Agreed, but things can change so much in a season as you know. McLaren have problems with tyre wear and rear grip it seems. Should be a very interesting season, things do seem to have closed up a bit.

Normally, teams are permitted to test right throughout the season. In 2009, its all change.

Now more than ever, if a team has an advantage at the start of the season, they are likely to keep it over the full course of the season.

McLaren are DEFINITELY struggling. Hamilton wont like being consistently in last place. I also presume his "off" was due to him pushing hard to post a fast time?

Ferrari are consistently at or near the top. Renault (Alonso) and BMW are drifting in and out, but are hovering in the top 3.

Team Brawn aren't looking half bad. ;)

How much do you think no testing through the season will change development?

I have no idea how much testing goes on for each part and don't know the intricacies of the new rules for this, can anyone elaborate?

It would seem Brawn GP are indeed still looking good, can't wait until they're all on the grid, not long now!

I don't expect McLaren to be struggling so badly in Australia but it is worrying at this time with how far off the pace they are.
Based on the testing times this week, the championship is wide open which would be great to see :)

It was the intention of the new rules in the first place. Time will tell how it shapes up.

It won't be a huge issue. New parts are tested in wind tunnels and simulators, track testing is really just to confirm that the results are correct. If someone is struggling with setup issues, especially with the new tyres, then the limited testing will be a problem, but that's not a development issue.

So it's limited to on track testing in season, fair enough. Could teams still use free practice for this though, it's not a testing session as such.

Yes, friday will become the time when new additions are tested. I believe they can still do straight-line tests during the season, but I may be mistaken on that point.

This year will be about how well each teams CFD and wind tunnel are calibrated.
