F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Something strange is going on - Bernie supposedly offering "£100m" and getting refused (the legalities of this would be questionable admittedly), - no serious offers, blah blah blah

As its not sorted now - I think they have run out of time to be ready for Aus anyway, would have loved to see the car with a Mercedes engine in the back though

For sure, he's great at getting headlines and even TV spots. He did the same with Northern Rock. Free publicity.

Exactly free publicity as the knight in shining armour without actually doing anything. Sure If F1 was able to run a team with no profit or a small profit on a set budget including driver wages he would be in like a shot. Hundreds would want in.

The reality is you stand still on $200 million and he wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

As I said it's looking very likely there could be huge layoff's with the airline. I cannot see him being involved in an F1 team while at the same time laying off hundreds of workers. That's not the kind of publicity he will like to be involved in.

Honda did the right thing. They couldn't do the same without cutting the F1 project.

I actually want to see another team go. So that teams like Mclaren and Ferrari that for years haven't cared about the sport they are in apart from taking, can run third cars or watch a sport they dominate without protecting fall apart.

Narrow minded greed has got them to the position F1 is in.

I heard on BBC radio 1 news this morning that Honda have officially said they have ‘No serious buyers’ lined up, and that they sincerely hoped to get Branson on board, but which has obviously failed.
I do hope something can come of this in time for the new season start. Any one else have any other news on this?

he was on breakfast news this saturday, and wouldnt (or couldnt ) confirm they were in talks, but said that if they were, it would have to have some sort of environmental guarantee to be eco friendly for them to undertake it.

i cant see F1 running a race with Hydrogen Fuel Cell or Electric cars anytime soon, so im guessing that was the sticking point.

I can understand the cost cutting measures (to a degree) but making F1 green, thats like saying sorry lads no more supersonic jetfighters are going to be developed since they burn too much fuel, total madness.

just read the previous page of comments, think they may be right that the "eco" thing was an excuse to back out, while still getting them great publicity. Just like the northern rock fiasco ...

Is this a sign that some of McLaren's engineers are admitting guilt in the Spygate affair? They did get a "no contest" plea in rather than get found guilty, of course. Still....."no contest" doesn't mean "not guilty" ;)

Link.
Another link.

And just before anyone chirps up, I'll restate my position on Spygate:

By all means, cheat. Steal technical data (or accept it when someone else steals it and hands it to you). Break into a rival team garage one night on a race weekend and photograph their car in minute detail.

Just don't bloody well get caught doing it!!!!

I'm absolutely certain that McLaren got slapped down the way they did for the simple fact that they got caught rather than the 'crime' they committed in the first place. I'm sure sunama doesn't agree (after all, it's just yet another example to him of how Ferrari International Assistance operates), but that argument is probably best left in the locked threads from last season....

definition of stealing : To take (the property of another) without right or permission.

Nothing about being GIVEN information by A N Other's employer

Thats why the charges where a crock of **** - but hey anything to try and gift a particular team an advantage in the future

The only thing McLaren should have been charged with is dodgy morals (and I would laugh if MM could charge them with that!!!)

Ferrari engineer didnt even steal the data either - as he had rightful access to it, however without doubt he broke his contract by handing them over to rival team/company , but that in itself is an internal Ferrari matter - should never have got to the FIA at all, but thats Ferrari's influence all over again

(even making use of stolen property - from McLaren's point of view - is a stretch of the truth imo, because it was never stolen in the first place)

They knew what they were doing. They didn't have to take the data and should have reported it straight away. Not when your arse of a driver starts blackmailing the team for leverage.

It's obvious the cheating went all the way to the top at mclaren. As I've said all along proof of that is the fact that Pedro kept his job for so long after being one of the main men doing things he shouldn't.

Anyway It's history and been done to death.

Well... of course! There wasn't actually any doubt about this was there?

I must say I had a niggling doubt that the BBC would actually bring it back. I'm very glad that they're going to!

We-e-ell, your definition of "stealing" fits what happened, doesn't it? To take the property of a person/group without their permission. Stepney took that data from Ferrari without their permission and handed it to McLaren, who were retarded enough to get caught in possession of it. So a case could certainly be made for possession/making use of stolen property. Though I guess industrial espionage charges would be closer to the mark.

Not that it matters anyway, McLaren admitted guilt, the engineers have used a plea-bargain to avoid admitting guilt by the skin of their teeth, and only Nigel Stepney is left facing court action in Italy now.
