F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

Banning refueling would be a big mistake, I like the variation in performance you get because cars are on different fuel loads. Surely not refueling, there fore possibly less pitstops (depending on tyres) is only just going to take away even more overtaking.

It would enhance overtaking, drivers would have to take more risks, and the cars would have to be designed in such a way that made overtaking as 'easily' as possible. 'Overtaking' in the pit lane as we've had for the past few years is dull tbh.

This is probubly the 3rd or 4th time the ban on refuling has been discussed in this thread, and it always end up at the same conclusion.

Baning refueling is a good idea, but only AFTER they have introduced other measures to make variations, such as brining back low fuel qualifying, and variations in engines (Turbo vs NA), and more differentiation between tyres.

When the 2009 rules were first presented they planned for narrower front tyres to counteract the move in the centre of gravity and extra grip at the front compaired to the rear. All the teams decided against this and kept the current wide fronts. Unsurprisingly they are now finding that the 2009 cars care practically nailed to the floor at the front end with a much less grippy rear end. TBH, even an idiot could tell you that improving front downforce while reducing rear would cause this, but hey ho, looks like they have finally twigged and the fronts will get narrowed next year.

I still say, wait for Hamilton to arrive. Only then will we get a better representation of what the new McLaren is actually capable of.

And today we did :D

Pos Driver Team Time Laps
1. Alonso Renault (B) 1:19.945 129
2. Raikkonen Ferrari (B) 1:20.250 104
3. Heidfeld BMW Sauber (B) 1:20.520 98
4. Trulli Toyota (B) 1:20.540 131
5. Webber Red Bull-Renault (B) 1:20.894 107
6. Nakajima Williams-Toyota (B) 1:20.948 83
7. Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes (B) 1:21.302 70
8. Sutil Force India-Mercedes (B) 1:21.411 79

Were those all running 09 spec now (tyres/wings etc)?

Lewis Hamilton was seventh fastest in his McLaren Mercedes as the Woking-based team again opted to run with the higher downforce 2008 specification rear wing.

The team has not made clear what difficulties they are encountering with their aerodynamic setup, but as they continue to evaluate the 2009 wing and subsequently switch back to the older model, it is clear that they have a problem with the start of the season looming large.

OK OK. :D
Lets see if he can improve things tomorrow.

;)

The bigger problem for McLaren though, is with the rear wing. To think that McLaren donot have a 2009 spec wing available for testing is a serious worry. We must assume that whatever 2009-spec rear wing they have is making the car slow/unstable, otherwise, they would've run with it and began developing it, incrementally. This bodes badly for McLaren, where they will be forced to run with some sort of 2009-spec wing, regardless of how slow/unstable it makes the car.

But its great to see Alonso put in some fast times. Tomorrow shall be Hamilton's 2nd day so there shouldnt be any excuses.

I believe he did 70 laps.

JRS, if the car was a known quantity that had been used all season, then it might be possible to put up a decent lap time from the word go. But when you take a brand spanking new car that is being patch-worked to allow it to function (ie. no 2009 rear wing), then you are asking a bit too much for Hamilton to push the car to the limit immediately. In any event, he did more than 7 laps.

But he's supposed to be The Almighty Great And Glorious Messiah, Our Lord And Saviour™! Surely he should be on the pace on his first lap?

;)

Im sure he would be if he didnt have to get used to a different rear wing setup every time he left the garage :)

They've run with the 2008 wing before today.

they have done most of there testing with the 08 wing. and a very sizable chunk of testing with 2010's tyres.

either there very confident and dont want to show there hand early or 08's celebrations have yet to work there way through the teams livers.

This is quite interesting

apparently only 1 engine passed QC for the last test (out of the 4 they wanted to take) and they had to dial it down. Perhaps something similar has happened here.

I'm still 50/50 about whether they are doing as Kovi said and running the numbers on both to better understand things and then ensure their wind-tunnel is as accurate as possible (so they can take stuff straight from computer to track without in-season tests) or have a serious problem. Their sidepods seem beefier than the other teams, and this was a problem for them in 2002 I remember (the f2002 had very narrow sidepods which allowed better airflow IIRC).

Just watching that, is it me or does the action get more boring once the year reaches 2000.

The early stuff 70's till late 90's is epic however!

I know what your saying, they were real characters then, senna kicking that steward piquet punching that bloke. Its not a contact sport anymore:D

Well, the site is pretty amateur by the looks of things. Much btter 3rd party sites out there.
