F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

I still say, wait for Hamilton to arrive. Only then will we get a better representation of what the new McLaren is actually capable of.

Oh man, and we just got done saying how we were all getting fed up of hearing honda rumours, well it's not even the first race and I'm getting annoyed at the Hamilton fanboys. Its like a school boys "my dads faster than yours" carry on. You "fanboys" better hope that McLaren have one of the best cars this year, as we have seen what happens when the pressure is on Lewis. Maybe we need McLaren to have a bad year and a poor car, then we will see how good Lewis Hamilton really is. I still say if Vettel gets a good car under him, he will be the man to beat this year, and i'll be cheering him on all the way, dispite being a Kimi fan.

Its not a case of being a fan-boy.

The facts clearly state that in the joint fastest car (with Ferrari), over the last 2 years, Hamilton has scored more points than Kimi and Massa. What was really impressive was when he was able to match Alonso's points total in 2007, which is something that no driver has been able to do for a while. Even Alonso himself, was shocked how just how good Hamilton was.

My gut feeling is that Vettel would be unable to match Alonso's points total, were he in the same team. Especially when you consider that for many (me, included), Alonso is currently the best overall driver in F1.

Don't get me wrong - Vettel is good, but Hamilton is more accomplished/complete and in 2009 is a more bankable driver, who also happens to be the reigning World Champ.

I think having won the world championship hamilton may have improved a bit, still gonna make mistakes but hopefully less of them.

As for vettel, unsure on him, he seems reasonable, but he's yet to really put in a stellar drive (imo, leading from the front in the wet when the only real rivals (Massa and Hamilton) are either a bit poor in the rain or way back in 15th place doesn't count...) But we'll see, looks like the Red Bull is quick, as is the Renault (with alonso), Ferrari and possibly/probably the McLaren, so should be a good season at least :p

Don't get me wrong here though - I am English so don't get to hung up on what I'm about to say - I can't help but feel that Massa was somewhat spectacularly robbed of the crown having driven a perfect weekend at home for the final race, yes there were hiccups for almost everyone last season we all know.

I have to agree with you on this one, good and not in the best of cars, lets see if he can build upon last year...

I'm still not sure about this, he is still young in the sport, raised by "Uncle Ron" for most of his life - granted it helped - and gifted with the best car.

Im a firm beliver that this year is more wide open than it has been since way before Mr Michael Schumacer ever turned a wheel in the Jordan...and with the new aero package it's looking my old school an akin to the F1 I loved as a kid...

Its quite possible that it could be wide open, but I wouldnt bet against the usual teams dominating the top positions (ie. Ferrari and McLaren).

Its too early to tell who is on top, as Ferrari always seem to avoid the other teams. Furthermore, McLaren keep testing their 2009 car, in non-2009 specification, on top of which Hamilton doesnt seem to turn up to many of the tests.

To sum things up, as of now, test sessions so far this year, have given us very little indication of who will go into 2009 as favourites.

i never understood the idea of no refueling. surely carrying around 200litres of fuel is dam right dangerous..... even if the tanks are really strong there's still a risk during a massive crash that the cell will leak and burn for hours on end while fire Marshall's try and put it out with small 10litre fire extinguishers

It's not much more dangerous than carrying around 100 litters. Anyway, when was the last crash + fuel fire you remember?

Second anyway - maybe they won't carry twice as much fuel, they will make the engines more efficient and race pace faster by not needing to carry so much fuel.

over time the engines will get more efficient - but as yet they are frozen arent they for another year or so (arent they frozen for three years?)

Surely race pace will be slower - same fuel during last 1/3 or so (as dry as possible), but much more during the 1st section of the race (ie no fast running just prior to 1st and or 2nd stop), but maybe Ive worked it out wrong lol

Banning refueling would be a big mistake, I like the variation in performance you get because cars are on different fuel loads. Surely not refueling, there fore possibly less pitstops (depending on tyres) is only just going to take away even more overtaking.

There's always a risk, but fires have been put out quite quickly in the past even when circuit safety was very poor by todays standards. Obviously Lauda was bad in the 70's and Pryce who was killed by a fire extinguisher. Since then we have far far better safety all round.

Cars will also vary on performance according to tyre wear, and when combined with the clearer racing that should come out of it, i fail to see a negative :)

(Except for not getting a chance to see ferrari screw up more fuel stops :p)
