All comments regarding the movable rear wing and overtaking are based on speculation and nothing else.

Captain ****ing obvious.

Alonso said..

Fernando Alonso thinks overtaking in Formula 1 is going to be just as hard in 2011 as it was in previous seasons - despite the introduction of the moveable rear wing. Alonso believes, however, that irrespective of the length of that overtaking zone, the competitiveness of cars at the front of the field is still not going to make things easy for drivers.

"If the car ahead of you runs only one tenth slower than you, then the moveable wing is not enough," Alonso told Gazzetta dello

Irrespective of the length of the overtaking zone?

That's BS, lets say they make the OT zone the length of the start finish straight at Barcelona, there's no way a car won't easily get passed if the respective paces are 0.1 apart when he trims off the wing.

The engineers are saying the wing is returning about 70bhp. If you can't pass down the straight at barcelona with 70bhp difference, you should perhaps consider a different job.

Obviously this is all speculation as is 99% of everything in pre season threads. No one knows where they will draw the lines, but IF they are getting 70bhp extra they should pass a car easily enough.

Not necessarily.

Consider that in the final GP of 2010 Alonso must've been at least 1s/lap faster than Petrov, yet he couldn't get passed him. What Alonso is saying is that now that in 2011, that time gap has been reduced, so where before you would probably have to be about 1-2s/lap faster than the car in front, now you can probably do the overtake even if you only say, 0.5s/lap faster.

I think you are assuming that the car behind can exit the last corner, right behind the car in front (nose to tail). As we saw in 2010, this is not the case and in general the car behind is usually about 0.5s - 1.0s behind the car in front. This means that in a single straight, the car behind has to make up this (0.5s-1.0s) gap and then proceed to outbrake the guy in front. In 2010, as we saw (for most drivers), this was not easy.

IMO, what Alonso is saying/predicting makes complete sense.

Has anyone got a calendar for this years season set up yet that can be imported into Google Calendar? Preferably with the practise sessions and qualification dates and times on there too!

A quick Google search turned up this: link

Any good?

F1Fanatic.co.uk has one as well, and it's more up-to-date than the first one I linked to.

First thoughts, YAY! Multiple pitstops and a definate difference in strategy between going all out and stoppign more, or taking it easy and stopping less.

However, thinking about it, that means 4 sets of tyres for the race, which will mean 3 for Q3, a couple for Q2 and 1 or 2 for Q1, so 10 sets gone in Qualifying and the Race. Dont the teams only have about 11 for the weekend?

End result, there isnt enough tyres to go around. Teams will do no running on a Friday and almost none on a Saturday morning to save as many fresh sets as they can for Quali and the race.

The FIA need to up the tyre allowance or its going to ruin things.

I thoguth Jackie actually lived in Geneva?

Hope he gets well soon (I know he is awake and talking - hopefuly dr's find the issue and its nothing major, even though I suspect everything is at his age when you go unconcious for little reason)

Those are somewhat exagerrated numbers, methinks. Firstly, drivers who qualify in the top 10 use the same tyres for the first stint as they qualify with. Secondly, I'd expect some re-use of tyres. Faster teams will likely use only one set for Q1, or do Q1 on the harder compound which can then be used for the race. Thirdly, I'd be surprised if drivers are getting through three sets in Q3, two is more probable, IMO.

They gets sets of tyres they can only use in practice, though.

He may well do, just habit of anyone coming back here coming "home."

Pre-season show on tonight on 5 Live at 8pm with Jake Humphrey, Anthony Davidson, Mike Gascoyne and Murray Walker.

Edit: show has been moved forward to 7.45pm to fit everything in.

BBC are also recording a pre season race show in the place of the Bahrain GP, so I'd imagine that would air next weekend.

And here's some technical analysis of all the cars so far in testing:

They gets sets of tyres they can only use in practice, though.

Either way, its an increase of 2 sets to up to 4 in the race, which is more than they used last season, and they have less tyres alocated to them this season than last season (anyone have the exact numbers).

I forgot they had dedicated tyres for Friday, but either way, it is going to have some effect.

But at least we wont have the joke situation like last year where a driver could easily do an entire race on one set at some tracks if they didn't have to use both compounds.

At the end of the day, every team/driver has the same number of tyres allocated. It is a level playing field. If drivers have to learn to look after their tyres better, then so be it.

The changing rules and driving styles, are all part of being a top class racing driver - something these men are highly paid for.

One of the reasons why I rate MSc so highly is that his career at the top spanned several generations of F1 car and various rules and regulation changes. Some drivers were unable to adapt, but MSc adapted to every change, successfully.
