F1 2014 regs

Not a lot - from what I've read, the 15krpm rev limit may well be fairly academic, as many people are expecting peak rpm a couple/few thousand rpm under this.

It limits power and also places a theoretical limit on the materials required. Any higher and you start needing to use unobtanium or other expensive exotic materials to make sure the engine won't self destruct. 15k is doable with 'normal' materials.

I'm no mechanic (and still learning F1 really). But won't doubling the amount of KERS power mean a heavier battery resulting in a slower car?

Its not that simple, but yes I imagine the batteries will be bigger. However the engines are a lot smaller so its swings and roundabouts.

like most things - year on year capacity improves for given weight /size

It may not be double, so they might become a little heavier/larger but the designers have to start (if they havent already) building the KERS into the basic parts of the car's design as its becoming more and more integrated within the rules.

This also potentially means less ballast to play around with

Interesting considering Mercedes ties to Force India. I assume this means the 'free engines' deal they have expires at the end of 2013?

Interesting also from a who will drive where point of view as well. Part of the presumption of Paul being at FI from my view was that he has good ties to Mercedes...

Can totally understand TR's move, but FI 's change does look a little strange.

(Unless Merc are forcing their hand with restricted amounts of engines for the 1st few years, after all I think there were rumours that Merc wanted to do this anyway after buying their own team)

Hope Paul doesnt get caught out in the shuffle - I really like him, but without really concerntrating on his season, he seems to have gone a little backwards in relative performances)

I don't see the point in manufacturers wanting to limit the number of teams they supply?

If we do drop to only 3 suppliers then they need to to be supplying 4 teams each. Assuming no other established teams switch:

RBR, TR, Lotus, Williams and Caterham running Renault engines.
Ferrari, Sauber and FI running Ferrari
McLaren and Mercedes running Mercedes
HRT and Virgin running ????

Mercedes need to pick up the slack, tbh, and possibly try poaching a Renault customer.

Yeah sounds like as the engines are more expensive (at least for the first few years?), Ferrari are offering a better deal.

I know there was talk about the engines being offered at a fixed price by all manufacturers, but no idea if that actually happened?

Anyone else hearing anything about the aero changes for 2014 being scrapped?

Scarbs has suggested on Twitter that someone on the autosport forums has picked up on it in the latest regs to be published?

2014 F1 Technical Regulations

A new draft with numerous changes was discussed and agreed by the F1 Technical Working Group and Powertrain Working Group.

The requirement for cars to be driven exclusively under electric power in the pit lane has been postponed until 2017.

A number of changes have been made to the power unit regulations with the aim of limiting technology in some areas in order to reduce development costs.

Changes made to bodywork design, originally aimed at reducing downforce and drag for increased efficiency, have reverted to 2012 specification.

The minimum weight limit has been raised to compensate for additional power unit weight.

Well that's pretty crap. The all F1 fans wanted is scrapped, and the bit we aren't overly bothered about is kept :(

It's not like they can even really say it's for cost saving now that most of the teams have probably spent a lot of cash developing for the new spec.

I'm assuming this is the smaller front and rear wings scrapped. What about the lower noses, as they were safety changes.

Seems it includes the lower nose and tub height too, perhaps the FIA have deemed this years adjustments satisfactory? I think it's a real shame, I love to see F1 get mixed up every so often.

Hamilton will be praying the engine change remains relatively untouched. I can seriously see him back at McLaren sooner rather than later if Merc don't deliver in the next couple of seasons, especially if Perez fails to develop.
