F1 2019 - News & Rumours

Wonder if Leclerc could be a decent bet for the WDC? 9/1 on bet365 & 10/1 on William Hill. I reckon he'll give Vettel a run for his money and Ferrari know he's their future so likely won't cede to Vettel too much on track or when it comes to parts or pit stops.
I'm a little surprised they're that short to be honest. For that money it's not worth it IMO. If they were odds on taking a win this season, they yes definitely take it. As much as I want Leclerc to do well I think Vettel will thoroughly take the shine of his star by the end of the year.

Who gets 2018 ferrari parts next year?.. If someone does they may leap to best of the rest
Haas and Sauber.

Renault will likely go backwards if Honda have improved as much as they say
Honda promised that last year and had the most component failures of any engine supplier. The year before that they promised a power upgrade and reliability. And the year before that they promised a power upgrade and reliability... Still waiting on all of those.

Mclaren will make no ground with the Renault engine

Riccardo believed he would get beaten by max, so has probably lost 6+ places in the WDC
.. And he might get beaten by hulk
Those two I agree with, at least in the short term. I'd back Renault to replace Red Bull in the top three in the next 2 or 3 years. If that happens Ric's switch will look like 'Hamilton to Mercedes' level genius.

They were, and they weren't any more powerful or reliable...

As far as you know, it's impossible to tell, every car except Mclaren had updates throughout the year. On top of that cars had different strengths so could finish 5th at one track and would be 15th at another, as such it's impossible to say if they gained power or not

As for Renault replacing RBR in the next few years, zero signs they can right now. Their new president quit his job before ever actually starting the job and Renault only announced it almost 3 weeks after he was supposed to have started.... which in general just means problems going on at higher levels. The Chief executive of the F1 team's parent company is also being detained over potential financial irregularities in Tokyo. The whole organisation is having problems which rarely bodes well for the company involved. We'll see but Renault haven't made many significant performance setups in years compared to the rest while RBR themselves are still doing magic with their chassis to be competitive with that engine. RBR is in a completely different class chassis wise to everyone frankly, even Merc now. Renault have to have an engine drastically better than Honda to even attempt to overturn the monumental chassis deficit they have to RBR.

All signs i see from Renault are they are no where near competing and no signs of building into a truly top team either. The signs they make are of building into an easy best of the rest, but they needed to have been stealing more top RBR/Merc engineers in the last few years to have a real shot at catching up to them.

Renault have been hiring like crazy and are also expanding at Enstone. It could also be said this years car is the first one to really benefit from the Renault investment. They may surprise a few people.

Hiring and investment without great management doesn't get you anywhere but wasting money. Think Toyota, or Mclaren with a huge team and no rudder steering it well. See Mercedes with the right guys at the top getting the best out of the other hundreds of employees.

The main guy who has overseen engine development since what, 2012, is still overseeing the engine today. Ferrari's guys who made their dire 2014 engine was cut within a couple months, new major players at the top of the division and by 2015 the engine was dramatically improved.

Renault just tried to take a huge step changing the head of the racing division and he quit before he ever set foot in the office.

Hiring, expanding and investing is all well and good, but we've seen loads of teams throw money at a problem which really need the right people instead. I've seen very few signs of Renault poaching the best of the best in the sport and without that you get nowhere.

They also just did what I regard as the worst thing possible, where they did need to authorise a higher budget for the right management to take the company forward, they just instead blew their load on making Ricciardo one of the best paid drivers in F1, rumoured to be in the $30-35mi a year range, that puts him at higher than what Hamilton had when he joined Mercedes iirc and frankly this year has only shown that he's a step down from verstappen in speed and that's with multiple years extra experience. They just threw championship level money at a driver who isn't good enough. As mental as if Ferrari went over to RBR and then handed Webber a $30mil a year contract.

Where Mclaren could have been doing with paying a different driver $5mil a year and putting the other $35mil into the car instead they gave it all to Alonso and Renault look to be doing the same thing. Who was more likely to win a title, Alonso in a Mclaren or Leclerc in a Sauber.

This is very good for the brand Alfa Romeo. They make cars if you remember.

I'm not quite sure why you're saying "if you remember"? What are you actually trying to say?

I've scratched by Alfa owner itch with a 159 Ti. I will never buy another Alfa Romeo again. Looked beautiful. Was engineered by a madman, who was also largely incompetent and was helped by his mate Dave who once read a book on electronics. Ok, he didn't read it, he picked the book up once.

Same. The 159 is a lovely and rare motor. Owner of a late 147; We have a love/hate relationship. The list of fixes/parts goes on. Still own, I tell myself it will become a future classic so refuse to part - its worth nowt - so selling is a bit pointless.

I nearly bought a 159/Brea; Having experienced a baby Alfa was sadly enough to put me off.

Still, I do love Alfa and will be (via highlights) rooting for the 'team' next year.

I don't think I love them but there is something endearing about the uncompromising Italian refusal to try and improve things other than the styling, and just shrug the rest off.

I'm still looking for the ever decreasing number of reasons to continue supporting McLaren, but I'll enjoy watching Alfa too.
