F1 Testing 2010

Lotus engine runs hot

14:03 - The Lotus team has been able to ride 46 laps. The Cosworth engine is now almost two minutes stationary toasty.

Tweet from Tony Fernandes

50 laps done. Without power steering FAUZY has done an awesome job. 1.31 2 seconds behind williams and 3 ahead of virgin

No power steering? Thats going to be hard over a race distance if they don't get it fitted soon.

Lewis Hamilton - 52 starts, 3 fastest laps (5.77%)
Sebastian Vettel - 43 starts, 3 fastest laps (6.98%)
Fernando Alonso - 139 starts, 13 fastest laps (9.35%)
Felipe Massa - 114 starts, 12 fastest laps (10.53%)
Michael Schumacher - 249 starts, 76 fastest laps (30.52%)
.

Or on the other hand Massa could only be getting 80% of what his car is capable of doing on those fastest laps - where as any other driver could be getting 99.9% of that cars capabilities

No one knows without being able to have two top drivers in the same identical car (with same tyres and updates) in the same track conditions, which rarely if ever happens, so its impossible to say

Personally think the car flattered Massa rather than the other way round but I dont particually like either very much

Love the look of the Lotus in low light - although my fav is still Virgin

Frank, Massa isn't as bad as you think.

I think Massa is a very good No.2 driver and had Button not joined McLaren, I'd have said that Ferrari had the strongest driver pairing for 2010. What I like about Massa is that he is an extremely intense driver, who always tries his hardest and doesnt give up.

Also, if you look at his points totals over the last few years, he has shown that he can be very consistent.

1 Vettel-Red Bull 1m22.593s
2 Hamilton-McLaren 1m23.017s +0.424
3 Massa-Ferrari 1m23.204s +0.611
4 Buemi-Toro Rosso 1m23.322s +0.729
5 De la Rosa-Sauber 1m23.367s +0.774
6 Schumacher-Mercedes 1m23.803s +1.210
7 Sutil-Force India 1m24.272s +1.679
8 Di Resta-Force India 1m25.088s +2.495
9 Petrov-Renault 1m26.237s +3.644
10 Barrichello-Williams 1m27.320s +4.727
11 Fauzy-Lotus 1m31.848s +9.255
12 Glock-Virgin 1m34.453s +11.860

All looking good so far roll on tomorrow :)

Was reading through the live timing and I think its more of a case of it not working than it not being fitted. Then again given the hilarious translations who knows what the issue could be. I will +1 the great looking car comments, the studio shots are all well and good but seeing it in proper conditions it looks even better. Not sure what to make of the times yet, 9 seconds off the pace but faster than Virgin with more laps completed and a fairly happy sounding Fernandes. Also noticed that Mike Gascoyne appears to be rather tiny, with a longer beard and pointy ears he could almost pass for an imp :D

Are Virgin still struggling with pace? they seem a long way off

Only managed 10 laps today.
There is no sensible reason other than mechanical issues why they shouldn't have been out there from the off today. They need time on track to find out whats going on with the car and work out how close to the CFD the actual car behaves.

Renault managed 55 laps
Everyone else did over 70
Mercedes, Force India and Williams managed over 100.

Supplier issues according to Gascoyne - may be fitted but not connected or not fitted at all.
And yes, Mike Gascoyne is kinda short. :D

Good set of laps for the new lotus, bit concerning see Virgin only do 10 laps total, hopefully they will get any mechanical issues sorted quickly, and get some laps under their belts.

Good solid stuff from the Lotus team. Their main objective from today would have been to get the car back in one piece with a hard drive full of data so job done in that respect. Lap times will have been pretty far down the order for them on the 1st test for sure. I expect the car to be a lot quicker once they hand it over to the 'proper' drivers.

I'd be suprised if Heikki & Trulli aren't at least half a sec per lap quicker than Fauzy. Possibly more.
