F1

All good jobs in F1 require you start at the bottom - Formula Renault, BMW etc and work your way up and then only if you are the best in your field will you progress into F1.

Good luck ;)

Dont do it, crap hours and crap pay. :)

Define crap hours and pay ... i bet i can beat it :P

Not really always the case. A friend of mine recently started working for one of the top F1 teams as a vehicle dynamics analyst (or something like that), and he just has a good degree in engineering. Wasn't even really a mad F1 fan.

Hours are usually as many as it takes to get the cars ready for the next race, then you have testing parts,R&D parts etc etc. Money depends on how skilled you are (note the word skilled and not qualified).

F1 sounds great but in reality it's not as glamorous as it appears on TV. This is based on my friends who went to uni with me and have worked in the industry. The race crews are a tiny part of the team.

For a F1 designer you will never go to a race, be worked silly hard (Asking to go for toilet breaks) and not be paid that great when you first start.

A lot of posters don't seem to realise that being an F1 driver isn't the only job in F1

Read the book The Pits: The Real World of Formula 1 before wanting to work in F1 circus, it opens an insight into the goings on behind the glitz and the glamour.

I know a few folk who have done it, a couple of mechanics loved it, but you need to have nothing in your life as you spend 90% of the year away working 18hour days with poor pay in comparrison and poor respect. However once you come out the circus you have lots of job prospects everyone wants an ex f1 mechanic. I also know a woman who used to be a engine component designer for mclaren, she said it was the hardest job of her life just constant preasure constant stress etc. she now works in public sector housing.

My brother started doing an aerodynamics course at farnborough, he couldnt hack it but it does sound an awesome course, not sure if they still do but they used to do work on the beneton f1 cars in their wind tunnel, could be a very good foot in.

wasnt there something on this last week on the F!, about becoming a steward?

volenteering at local racing etc working up to bigger and bigger races

It's this: http://www.gomotorsport.net/ isn't it?

Marshalling sounds like the worst (voluntary) job ever. Come rain or shine you stand out waving a flag every so often and legging it to a scene of a crash hoping that the driver isn't seriously injured. Get up at the crack of sparrows every Sunday and the only perk of the day is probably a free hamburger and coke!

and closer to the action than anybody

As i stated previously,it is not a 9-5 job, most jobs are salaried so you earn the same regardless of working 30 hours or 60 hours.

On the other hand you do get very well paid and the working conditions are awesome. As for pay the lowest paid person in my dept. earns in excess of 50k p/a.

What is your department out of interest? Do you do the aerodynamics stuff or was I dreaming?

What sort of races do you/have you marshalled? I'm semi-interested at the moment and was going to send off for more information. But every time I've been to Brands Hatch the marshals seem well, a bit isolated in their sheds/areas?

Obviously it goes without saying that it can be incredibly dangerous as well!

if your not on radio duty wear some ear plugs lol, its stupidly noisy, well on the bike ones ive marshalled anyway.

I work in F1 and almost all people that come through are friends of friends and have great uni background.
Technical/Software is the 2 main sectors.
People think F1 = £££ but 99.5% are on the usual wages of designers and techs etc.
