F10 BMW 535D

What are you talking about ? Its a near as damn it a 1.8 tonne car that accelerates as fast as an average hot hatch. No, its not earth shattering performance but there is no arguement that its quite reasonable for the engine size and size of car

It is the amount of torque available from the engine and the 8 speed gearbox allowing short ratios in the first 4/5 gears that gives it good performance. If you compare it to the 528i which has a similar amount of power but less torque even with the autobox on both the 530D is still quicker. The ZF box is excellent it makes a 520d almost bearable.

I have driven a 535D and a 530D, it is quicker but not that noticeable until past 80 ish. I would imagine if you spent a lot of time on the autobahn accelerating between 100-155mph it would be a good bit quicker than the 530D.

In the UK at least I don't think the power upgrade is worth the extra 4.5k over a 530D on a new model. I would happy with the performance of the 530D but on the second hand marker would pick one up a 535D over a 530D if it had the same spec and within 1-2k.

In almost all cases the xx5D variant (top of range) comes with more kit. You're paying for the extra kit as well as the extra tuning/turbo.

The 5-series is a very attractive all-rounder as it's basic spec is very high. Only downside, as i said in my earlier review a few months back is that it is actually a very big vehicle which doesn't handle the ever-shrinking parking space sizes very well. You'll either get idiots banging their car doors into yours, or you won't be able to find a suitable space to park in.

Really? xx5D's come with more kit? And here was me thinking it was the package you chose that determines the kit you get with the machine (Luxury, Modern, M-Sport etc...).

You do get bigger brakes and an extra tailpipe though. As well as the engine tuning.

Personally, I made the compromise on the engine, so I could get the extras I wanted. So went for the 530d. I don't regret it for a second. Now, if the M550d were to get a UK release, that would indeed be a completely different matter. As it is though, I'd need to go for an X5 for that engine in the UK. Maybe next time.

As you go up the engines you get more spec as standard. 530d gets interior lighting and dual zone climate. 535d gets illuminated sills AFAIK. Fox will know for sure.

Get a 535d and then fit a Hartge tuning kit so you have 362 HP and 730 Nm. Will give you 200hp/ton and 0-60 in 4.x seconds.

I don't disagree with you, I just thought that 86JR was inferring the old diesel feels fast because of the torque thing which lots of diesel hatch drivers get taken in by when it's not. I was making the point the 530d is relatively quick its not just a torque thing if that makes sense.

No I was inferring that the difference between his 530i and his 530d is probably more down to the massive increase in torque over the petrol car and not necessarily the gearbox.

Having said that I played with an 8L S3 which are 225hp and my car has 160hp and we were neck and neck into triple figures thanks to my full throttle, DSG gear changes.

Ah sorry for my mis--understanding :o

This is what majorly put me off buying an e39 M5. Manual gearbox. Been spoilt by automatics!

Then you think how much a £10k M5 would break over a 2 year period and suddenly the £1k per month personal lease F10 M5's start to look cheap!

Oh, and the £1k 535i BMW M Performance Power Kit.

Why the 535i and not the 535d? I now do 280 miles a week (the E60 continues to be the work horse), which saves £4k over the price of a new 535d. That's around 28000 miles worth of fuel :)

Lovely, much better than the dag dag tractor versions. Nice options list too :)

Some bizarre spec going on, why the rear heated seats and 4 zone? And why the tv? Looks like one of those fantasy every box ticked for the sake of it spec, i would rather a 640 with less pointless over specifying.
