Fabrice Muamba collapses on pitch during FA Cup match

From Bolton:

Owen Coyle has today (Tuesday) given an update on the condition of Fabrice Muamba.

Fabrice is in intensive care at the Heart Attack Centre in the London Chest Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Coyle said: "The consultants have stressed to us that it is still incredibly early in the process. They continue to monitor Fabrice's condition.

"His heart is beating without the help of medication but we remain very much at the beginning of a long-term journey for Fabrice and his family.

"He has been visited today by a number of our players. The skipper came down, along with Nigel, Mark and Darren, and we are expecting more of the lads throughout the day.

"I have been in to see Fabrice and we had a brief exchange of words. That will remain private.

"Fabrice is a fighter and his family have shown great strength in this testing time. They have been greatly comforted by the huge amount of support they have received from around the world.

"I'd like to thank all our Wanderers fans who have been in touch, and a special mention must go to our supporters on Saturday who were outstanding, as indeed were Tottenham's."

Anyone else beginning to find the whole emotional outpouring a little OTT and quite frankly silly now?

Not saying I don't wish the guy well and it was certainly handled the right way by officials and fans alike but now? It's like every pundit/player/manager/club are trying to one up the rest on how much they care. I find it slightly cringeworthy and it seems to be becoming more about those who care and how great they are than Muamba himself.

No1newts i kinda feel the same.

the tributes are amazing and its incredibly bad, but you all know that 30,000 african chiolden die each day right, and their lives are just as valuable as anyone elses. But out of sight, out of mind as the saying goes.

i kind of agree too

my brother put on his fb status how he wishes muamba well but found it slightly strange he was getting more media attention than the 6 brit soldiers bodies that were flown back today :(

Soldiers die all the time in war, not very often a PL footballer has a heart attack on the pitch, that's why it's more newsworthy. Sad but true.

It's the circumstances of it that has given it the exposure it's receiving. If it had happened off the pitch it wouldn't be receiving this level of exposure, but because it happened during a match, in front of a full stadium and on television, it's become quite a big thing.

I wish the guy well.

i know. it's terrible, i was watching as it happened and it is bad and a real eye opener, but he hasn't died. i know this doesn't make it any easier on his friends, family and fans and i'm glad the football community has been bought togethor by this but in the context of things, i'm standing by my point.

It wouldn't be newsworthy if it was anyone else having a heart attack on the football pitch. It wasn't for my mate and he wasn't lucky enough to have an army of medics pitch side to save his life.

I guess it is a lot to do with football pundits/presenters whatever being their area of discussion for whatever show they are on and this is the biggest news currently in football hence why it is talked about in pretty much every sports article/show/interview.

That said, Kevin Davies used it as an opportunity to complain that it is 'a sad state' that you have to be carried off on a stretcher to be applauded by opposing fans, which is really completely irrelevant and also completely wrong in a week where Rooney was applauded for his goal vs Bilbao along with Giggs being subbed and Fulham fans also applauded the Swansea team?
(and every single goalie bar bolton's as it happens get applauded at anfield.)

don't know why he said that. why would an opposing teams fans applaud opposition except in exceptional circumstances as an (unwritten) rule? after the game, sure. but during the game, it's about competitiveness.

what happened to muamba was about humanity. every opposing teams fans would've clapped, it wasn't about football.

It did come across as a bit bitter and not the time to bring it up at all, it is standard human behaviour to show some compassion in such situations, you support your team not the others, if you feel they deserve applauded for being exceptionally good then so be it, dumb comment from him.

Liverpool's fans wouldn't. They would have been 'sieg heil'-ing along with Suarez standing over his lifeless body.

i know there's the whole alan smith ambulance thing but i honestly don't think they would

i read an article today about the hillsbrough disaster (over 20 yrs ago, i know) about how 'some' FA officials were scheduling when the replay was to be played whilst bodies were still being identified and how dalglish (rightly) went mad at this.

things really are progressing well (bar the occassional blip which we all know about) but it's strange to think that how something that happened 6 yrs ago (cech head injury - waiting 30 minutes for an ambulance) had to happen for the medical side of things to be shook up.

my stance still remains, i don't think any fans would've reacted differently. i hope we never have to find out though.

Kevin Davies is a total **** though. Everyone has been showering him with praise over what he's said about Muamba and Speed but the way he carries himself on the pitch says far more about him as a person than some stage managed PR piece.

I assumed that I had missed something he had done to be honest. Lots of praise for not being a **** when your mate nearly dies. I would have been a little shocked if he had come out saying "glad to see my friend might not survive".

Someone on the BBC was saying he deserved an MBE for services to football. :o

You can't be serious :o

I wish Muamba well along with everyone else and fantastic work by the medics and Howard Webb conducted himself well.

But MBE and the likes being mentioned? For crying out loud it is standard human behaviour to show compassion and help/support those who are hurt let alone having a heart attack. Considering the crap Davies came out with after he should be slaughtered in the media for using the situation of one of his team mates dying to have a go at every football fan, guarantee if a foreign footballer complained about our fans that way they would.

Haven't really kept up with this thread but it certainly looks like Muamba is on the road to recovery now (dare I say it appears he's over the worst of it). I'm surely not the only one who feared the worst Saturday night/Sunday morning. It would be remarkable if he can return to football for Bolton in a year or so
