Fabrice Muamba collapses on pitch during FA Cup match

Bolton club doctor who treated Muamba on the pitch has said that he had 15 seperate shocks from a defib. 1 on the pitch, 2 in the tunnel and 12 in the ambulance. He also said his heart stopped for 78 minutes!!!!!! He's said early signs of recovery look good.

a big shout must go to Dr andrew deaner, a heart specialist and spurs fan who essentially acted as a consultant during the pitch treatment

Probably would have been perfectly ok and ready to play again if it was a Bolton fan though :D:p.

Just kidding. One of the partners of my firm is over from the US at the moment and got taken to the London chest hospital where Muamba is last night due to chest pains!

How is it possible to survive that long?

I thought brain damage kicked in much sooner.

I would guess the CPR is what kept his brain intact, iirc they were even doing it whilst he was stretchered off the field. Although 78mins without a heart beat does seem a long time.

Those involved with saving him should get a medal tbh these guys are the real unsung heroes in our society, they probably save lives daily and you don't see them getting knighthoods or £2m bonuses.

Anyone else beginning to find the whole emotional outpouring a little OTT and quite frankly silly now?

Not saying I don't wish the guy well and it was certainly handled the right way by officials and fans alike but now? It's like every pundit/player/manager/club are trying to one up the rest on how much they care. I find it slightly cringeworthy and it seems to be becoming more about those who care and how great they are than Muamba himself.

I couldn't agree more tbh and whilst you might be right, sometimes we cling on to things that remind us who we are, what we have and that we are indeed human after all.

Whilst its partially like RIP threads in GD, where everyone HAS to say something about how sad it is that some random person they've never met has died, in large part I think because people consciously or unconsciously want to look "good", as in nice, kind and doing what everyone else does.

Muamba gets around a bit, he's played with so many players already, and you get the very genuine impression from a LOT of players that they know and deeply respect him. While on the outside "smart" footballers are looked down on, I wouldn't be surprised if many within the sport greatly respect those who didn't pee their education away, especially older players. Likewise Muamba wasn't gifted his life, he had a bad start to life, escaped, and everyone says has worked exceptionally hard, worked hard to achieve well at school while training hard in football which many other players(maybe most) all but ignore school while getting into football.

He seems to work hard, still likes to learn, isn't someone who goes around banging hookers/getting smashed, he's simply well known amongst players playing in England and Europe as many European players would have come across him at international competitions.

You can go out on the pitch and try and kick everyone, cheat, foul and injure and gain hate amongst players of other teams, and there are those players that players at all clubs respect greatly.

Basically in this case I think its genuine, you'll have players at Barca and Real who have either played with him, trained daily like Cesc, or those who played against him in international competition, or those at those clubs who simply feel badly for players who knew him.

I mean this stuff does happen to a lot of people, its not surprising the biggest reactions end up being for people everyone unanimously agree is a genuinely really nice guy in football.

Remember DM, with side's in Spain they had a couple of players suffer with this in recent times without the happy ending.

I agree.

I also think that this happened while it was watched by a huge audience too, has had an effect, it was a genuinely horrible image and a lot of people saw and witnessed it, and effected by it.

Muamba has been discharged from hospital today! :)

Is Fabrice Muamba the second coming of christ? He dies, is ressurected, and comes out of hospital 7 days after Easter? ;)

Not sure why I had this in the transfer thread, whoops!

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba to retire from football on doctors' advice.

Sky News Break

And also BBC now too and now Boltons Official twitter too.

A shame, hopefully Bolton find something else within the club for him.

Muamba on his retirement:

"Since suffering my heart attack I have remained utterly positive in the belief I could one day resume playing..."

"Last week I travelled to Belgium to seek further medical advice from a leading cardiologist, the news I received was obviously not what I had hoped it would be and it means I am now announcing my retirement"

"While the news is devastating, I have much to be thankful for, I thank God that I am alive and I pay tribute once again to the members of the medical team who never gave up on me."

More coming on BBC.
