I’m looking for some parental advice on Face book, I have heard of it but never used it myself.

My daughter wants to start using it as all her friends are on there and I thought I would ask you guys if there are any privacy settings etc I need to set.

How old is your daughter? My neighbour set up an account for her daughter that she shared with her for 6 months or so until she was satisfied it'd be ok to leave her to it.

Facebook has lots of built in privacy settings and is good about things like this.To start as I'm guessing she's under 18 someone would have to add her as a friend to see her full profile.

It's fine. Just make sure her profile isn't set to public (default setting I think), and only her friends will be able to see her info.

How times have changed, I had free roam on the internet when I was a kid (I'm 27 now), and to be honest I didn't abuse it either.

But as people have said here, security can be made tight enough, you can even stop people asking to be friends so the profile is completely private.

Indeed, however if was you i would moniter who she is talking to for around 6 months until you feel comfortable with how things are going...

Facebook is safer than most network sites, most people have their profile set to private so only friends can see your profile.

Which means unless you just add random people you can't really communicate with anyone you don't accept as a friend.

Check her friends list periodically. Make sure she knows not to go and meet anyone, sorted.

the internet is a sick sick place

Well I don't think that's limited to just the internet.

Both my kids are on facebook. I wasn't keen but kids are taught internet safety at school and there are plenty of privacy setting too. If you are worried, then make sure they are aware of the dangers and your concerns. If they have mobile devices that are connected to a wireless router, make sure the router settings are set to block traffic say after a certain time.

You could set yourself your own account so you can keep an eye on what's going on.

Same here, lucky for us the Daily Mail only invented pedos the last few years.

Just look in the privacy settings, you can really lock down everything, so if someone isn't a 'friend' all they'll see is a name and the main photo

Why wouldn't he, he's a concerned parent.

because its not a public chatroom? aslong as the kid uses some common sense there is no danger.

only add real friends not just any old random person from your school/area , set your profile to friends not "friend of friends"

all will be fine.

its not as if facebook is full of pedo's trying to find the profiles of young girls
