Face Book advice

No matter how strict you make the privacy settings on Facebook it still needs to be coupled with education. For example its all very well if no one can see her profile but her friends, but she needs to be aware why it's important to only add people she knows in real life and can trust. Adding everyone who friend requests her will undermine the privacy that has been put in place.

Perhaps you could set yourself up an account and have her as a friend so you can go on to her profile and check no one is doing anything inappropriate, or have a shared account that you can check every so often.

One common tactic I've read about is parents checking, picking a friend at random and asking how they know him/her.

Thanks for the info, my daughter is eleven and uses a laptop on the table where we can see the screen at all times.

It seems all her friends have it as well as a few of her teachers but I have told her not to try to add them, only her friends.

Make sure you have access to it - Know the password ect, and lock it down and monitor it.

Set up a rule wiht her that she'll only invite friends/accept them when your there so you know who she has on it.

this is what a friend of mine did with her 9yr old daughter

I'd suggest your avoid installing 'cool wall' and other similar apps, it's just pure smut and annoying to be honest.

Zynga Poker on the other hand is great. :D

Oh the joys of the 'cyber chat rooms' when i was 12. It used to be amazing that you could actually talk to loads of real people on the other side of the world all at once! 'wanna cyber' 'lol' 'asl'

Before internet, we had CB radios to communicate in social groups.. We had "eyeballs" which were effectively blind dates! Quite frightening looking back. Things haven't really changed.. Only the technology and our perception.

Sorry, not worth creating my own thread - but on Facebook, what is :

XXX has a baby White Tiger separated from its mother. Oh My!
XXX just received a Mom and Baby White Tiger from the Wildlife Care Network. They were rescued from Poachers but the mother had to be released back into the wild to survive. The baby White Tiger is scared and lonely and needs someone to adopt her.

What is that application? Is it like another Farm thing? Or is it a e-birthday card thing? The description, unsurprisingly, is not enough and I don't wanna randomly start adding apps to my account.

Soon her entire life will be broadcast across the internet, at her own choice, for the world to see. She won't even visit the loo without all her friends knowing.

Some zoo thing, you can always just hide the notifications.

A good friend of mine has a 13 year old daughter on facebook and he has become suspicious lately as shes been talking a lot on it. A female colleague at work has his daughter as a friend and she looked through her friends list. there were over 130 people many of which certainly werent her age.

My advice is to get her to show you every friend she has on her list once a week, if she refuses this then ban it, there are groomers and bad people on there preying on young kids. Be vigilant, strict and wary, a clued up parent is a good parent.

That’s kind of what I’m worried about, but I guess it’s the norm with kids these days.

You seem awfully concerned about it. It's not like she's being given a gun or something. Just set her account to private, tell her to not accept anyone she isn't friends with or doesn't know and to tell you if anyone strange is talking to her.

Not really a need to snoop into her business is there?

Do you not think that is scare-mongering? Sure there are weirdo's out there, but you make out like every 12 year old that uses the internet gets hit on by internet paedophiles.

How times have changed, I had free roam on the internet when I was a kid (I'm 27 now), and to be honest I didn't abuse it either.

That was probably because you knew more about it than your parents, remember the world wide web is only about 15 years old.

Grooming is every parent’s nightmare and luckily I’m very computer literate so I will be keeping a very close eye on it.

But on the flip side the Internet is a massive part of kids lives these days and I don’t want to go to over the top.
