Failed Console/Media platforms.

My comment of Playstation may seem a trolling one, but the original version of Playstation never made it forward so I guess it suits your requirements.

Plus it's one to make you look uber geeky to your friends who might not know the origins of Playstation.

If you were referring to the Nintendo/Sony collaboration called the Playstation then you are correct - in fact it never even made it past the prototype stage before Nintendo dumped Sony like a hot potato and went to Panasonic instead.

The Sony Playstation however has huge and opened up the console market massively - sold over 100 million units iirc.

The end of the 8 bit era, amstrad and commodore both decided to release console versions of their sucessfull c64 and 464 machines.

Given the market at the time where everybody was looking at the megadrive, it's hard to see what they were thinking.

One of the worst for sure, atleast with the concepts of cdi and amiga cdtv they were trying on something new that might have worked out.

Comodore pretty much did the same again with the cd32, an 1200 with a cd drive, no reason for the fanbase to grab one, and the mass market was too busy tucking into the Huge catalogue of megadrive/snes games.

I thought it failed mainly because of the launch of the PS2 but who cares, I had both of them and loved them both, I was the luckiest 11 year old boy ever. :D

Yeah pretty much. The PS2 steamrollered it. Shame as it was a great console with so many excellent titles. Damn, I might have to dig mine out now!

It did sell about 100,000 units in the year or so before Commodore went bust, it also did a roaring trade in grey imports from Canada in the US and if Commodore hadn't been under a court instated trade embargo in the US probably would have sold many more.

To be honest i had no idea it moved 100 thousand units, not sure what others were shifting at the time, but that'd qualify as a success in the short lifespan of it's production.

Being fair though, commodores internal issues aside, ultimately it's all about the software. The loyal fanbase they had in america and europe probaly wouldn't have held up the organisation alone, given the resources that had and the situation they were in, they needed the cd32 to crack the mass market.

Where the software failed the machine, it wasn't hard to crack the A1200 comment when you consider most cd32 software was nothing more than aga repacks on a cd.

You have no idea how disapointed i was to see frontier was nothing more re release on a cd... non of the pc extras with the textures, one of the reasons why i skipped on the thing.

That is exactly what I was talking about. It does make you wonder if they would have stuck together where we would be today with consoles.

PSP and Dreamcast. I know the PSP might be a controversial one, but it's being aggressively forced through the markets when it should have been laid to rest a long time ago. The recent PSPgo was such a silly thing to do, and Sony is having to release it with 10 free games to justify the purchase. I think we can all agree the UMD is definitely a failed media format.

I don't think there will even be a PSP2 anymore, especially with Nintendo's complete surprise unveiling of the 3DS - Sony would have responded by now (it's a common industry tactic to knock the wind of the competitors' sails about their new consoles) but it's quite clear by now from the absolute complete silence from them that the PSP2 is more than likely shelved. There isn't even any miniscule leaks or any developers going 'watch this space from Sony, we're working on something really cool for it'.
