Failed Console/Media platforms.

Can we do pre-emptive failures? :p

Agreed.

Thought that this 'could' work, though I was and still am, sceptical that the current infrastructure is ready for such tech. I am still not sure the public is ready for it though.

However the recent annoucements that in all likelihood ISP's will not be able to realistically run/offer an 'Unlimited Broad band' service soon, then this is absolutely doomed to failure. In this country anyway.

Can someone explain why some people are saying Playstation ?

Am i missing something? When i was young everyone I knew had a PS1.

A quick scan of wiki tells me nothing of " the true origins of Playstation "

And it tells me

"The original PlayStation was the first "computer entertainment platform" to ship 100 million units, which it had reached 9 years and 6 months after its initial launch."

They're being clever by referring to the SNES CD which was going to be an add on for the SNES made in part by SONY. Nintendo went with Panasonic in the end and SONY made the Playstation.

I was really looking forward to this machine as well ! Can you imagine what the games would have been like with Nintendo and Sony working together

You laugh but the PS3 has lost Sony more money than the PS2 made; it's lost more than the Xbox 1 lost.

That being said, it's future is safe and it has some of the generations best exclusives.

It all depends how you define failure. Xbox 1 was a financial failure but sowed the seeds for the Xbox 360 and was a good console with some great games.

Surely not a greater loss then Micro$ofts xbox 360 RROD problems?

Sega Game Gear
That "Phantom" console thing

Game Gear was quite successful in a way. I mean it was virtually a portable Master System, had colour, some decent games, and was a good rival to Nintendo's old GameBoy. But clearly, the clunky design and the ridiculous draining of 6 batteries are some of it's major downfalls.

Anyone remember the "Phantom" console, where it was supposiviely just a PC and being able to download and play games? It was pretty much second in line to the likes of Duke Nukem Forever in the vaporware area.

ah ..now memories

phillips cd-i - ( who rememebers flashback on that ? )
dreamcast - i actually have 2 both fully working and i play time to time , and i'll still kick anyones arse playing quake 3 arena with keybaord and mouse :P ( lol and rollerball )

I would say that the Playstaion was a fail, but not for Sony. Nintendo by doing one over Sony (kinda) made Ken and Co. develop the original idea a bit further and eventually Create the Playstation which has possibly been the biggest selling game consoles in history. I wonder if Nintendo had kept to the Sony CD upgrade if there ever would have been a Playstation, then the N64 and GC would have not been the relative flops for Nintendo.

Heh, way more. Haven't got the figures to hand but the PS3 has so far lost Sony about $4b+ and is just breaking even now; this figure doesn't include R&D before it was launched or profits from the PS2 since 2006,

MS lost about $1.5b from the RROD debacle but have made a profit this last few years.

MS are still down the most if we count every year since they entered the market though.

If I remember the chart right Nintendo have never had a negative year and are about $12b over all.

A bit like MS, Sony has changed the depts involved in the entertainment division and now include the R&D costs. This has happened since the PS3 so all numbers previous didnt include R&D cost so they look far better and the PS3 looks far worse. It still doesnt hide the fact that the PS3 has been a money pit for SCE, i guess we wont know how much of the BD "win" over HDDVD has increased sales of BD disks and Sony royalties to help offset this. Now the PS3 is making a profit at its less than halfway point I wonder how long (if at all) it will take SCE to make the money they lost back.

Also I'd have to add the PC Engine/Turbografx

Blimey we've got some funny answers here. PC Engine, Neo Geo....really??

These have played host to some classic games and commercially were successful (odd variants of the PCE aside; i.e. the GT/Turbo Express).

Stinkers are going to be include the likes of the Commodore 64GS, Amstrad GX4000, Atari 5200/7800, Game.com, CD32, CDi, 3DO, (even though I liked this machine's games), Jaguar, NUON etc.

Another info source too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars

3DO, (even though I liked this machine's games)

Yep.

It was where I first got to play Super Street Fighter II Turbo with the arranged soundtrack and the first Need For Speed game.

I remember it was also possible to use the 6-button Mega Drive gamepad, so it made things like SSFIIT much easier.

Agreed. Of all the duds I listed it actually had a good line up of games - including a couple of exclusives.

Owned and loved; Road Rash, SSF2X, Need For Speed, Space Hulk and Return Fire all spring to mind.
