Failed Console/Media platforms.

My comment of Playstation may seem a trolling one, but the original version of Playstation never made it forward so I guess it suits your requirements.

Plus it's one to make you look uber geeky to your friends who might not know the origins of Playstation.

totally understand where you are coming from - but I still disagree, only because its a brandname from one company coupled with a product from another

ie an inhouse project is always going to get much more support than something from a 3rd party you yourself are going to market

Plus it wasnt really a console in its own right - it was really just an updated package (not unlike a spectrum & spectrum +2) , cant even really compare it to something like the repackaging of PS2's /PS3's and Xboxs etc simply because the latter dont really change their ability as such

Just my call on the subject :)

I'm the proud owner of a 60-movie strong collection of Laserdiscs, along with a Pioneer player (I can't remember the model number, but it reads both sides of the disc ;)). Not that it was a failed format, it was hugely successful in parts of Asia, but it was constantly overshadowed by VHS in the West.

Something like the LD 2950? I believe it was something like that which could play both sides

A bit like MS, Sony has changed the depts involved in the entertainment division and now include the R&D costs. This has happened since the PS3 so all numbers previous didnt include R&D cost so they look far better and the PS3 looks far worse. It still doesnt hide the fact that the PS3 has been a money pit for SCE, i guess we wont know how much of the BD "win" over HDDVD has increased sales of BD disks and Sony royalties to help offset this. Now the PS3 is making a profit at its less than halfway point I wonder how long (if at all) it will take SCE to make the money they lost back.

As far as I understand it (and the company I work for studies these figures for investment purposes - and with a £15bn fund, are pretty good at it) - Sony are in over all profit from the PS3 including R&D, and not requiring the gargantuan profits from the PS and PS2 to "cook" the books

While originally the PS3 was costing Sony a handful with each sold unit, they are now making a profit on each one (and I believe have been for about 6 months or more)

No way in the world can anyone classify the PSP as a failure - incl R&D it has easily earnt more than it cost to develope and market, UMD is/was a huge disaster and PSPgo was a drastic mistake but PSP in generall was alright (although I would agree that it was a let down ) certainly no disaster/failure

Everything I've read indicates the PS3 is still about $3.5b down. Sony had to sell their Cell and Insurance divisions to raise cash and whilst they're just breaking into profit now the PS3 has been far from a profitable venture.

Relative to the DS it is.

i wouldnt say dreamcast was a failure anyway it had some truly awesome games , it was well ahead of its time when it came to dreamarena.

what other console let you surf the internet? play multiplayer games online? had chatrooms and an infastructure all paid for by sega etc.

if it were microsoft they would have made you pay a subscription

when you think about it really its amazing it lost out to the playstation

Yeah, when you look at what it offered for the time, it was a real shame, a large part of the reason it failed; aside marketing; was that in a way it was too far ahead of its time, especially for the UK.
In the UK at the time, the vast majority of households were still using 56Kb modem connections, with the costs that came with it, it wasn't until a few years later that broadband and 'unlimited' usage/much lower costs came about in the west. In that sense it was too far ahead of it's time; if it had arrived a few years later when broadband was taking off, and had supported that out of the box, it probably would have done much better.

Unfortunately the Xbox came along and tapped that market; Sega saw it taking off in Japan, and moved too far for the rest of the world.

right so because the wii is undoubtedly the current champion - the X360 is a failure!!!

sorry it just doesnt work like that

The PSP is a huge success

Indeed, the PSP is the most successful non-Nintendo handheld console ever to-date, as all others before have failed.

Sega's Game Gear "could" have been as successful if not for it's clunky design and massive 6 battery power drain.

If you were referring to the Nintendo/Sony collaboration called the Playstation then you are correct - in fact it never even made it past the prototype stage before Nintendo dumped Sony like a hot potato and went to Panasonic instead.

I read it was because sony wanted to use CD's and nintendo wanted to stick with cartridges. Way to go nintendo!

Out of all the failed consoles, I did actually own a Jaguar... Played Tempest 2000 like a mad man for a few months and then sold it to a Pakistani fella, who was buying it for his sons birthday at more or less the same price i paid for it when new????.. I distinctively remember thinking to myself 'sucker' as he handed over the cash !
