Failing Samsung F1 - Need Some Help

My Samsung F1 HDD is failing. i have run the manufacturers diag CD and it shows a few error.

I have imaged the Disk using Acronis True Image.

I plan to have another HDD here before this one fails completely.

The F1 has been superseded by the F3 will this hamper my restore of an image? my plan was to install the new drive, put vista on it, then the Acronis software. Slave the dying drive of off the new one and restore the image?

Does that make sense? Will it work? Or do i need to do something different?
 
You can create a boot disk from within Acronis and use that to boot your system with the new HDD installed and then restore your image to the new HDD. The fact the image was taken from a F1 and is being restored to a F3 will not cause any problems.
 
So how will i connect the drives up Phil? Should I slave the new one from the old one or vis-versa? I don't have a means of copying the 325GB file to any other device unfortunately.


*A thought* Given that the drive is still working, could I install the new drive and hang it off this one, then use Acronis to make a copy of the faulty drive to the new HDD? somehow?

You don't have master / slave settings with SATA drives. Plug them into any free SATA ports and they'll happily see one another.

Excellent - I also see that Acronis has a clone option - so it should just be a case of plugging new drive in and using that facility I guess?
 
I have just done this when replacing my old 500gb drive with a 1tb.

If you have both drives available, Acronis can clone the drives exactly including the MBR. It is then a simple case of unplugging one and installing the other.
 
Was there anything in particular you had to do Shah? Can you give a quick overview as i dont want to muck this up :)
 
Nothing in particular mate.

Assuming you want both drives exactly the same with regards to partitions and data, then it is really just a case of cloning one to the other.

You need to leave the new drive unpartitioned so that acronis can take care of that for you as well.

Other than that, acronis will reboot the system and a screen like the Windows installer will appear on bootup which will go through the copying process automatically.

Once it is done, another reboot should see you done.
 
As for the cloning, all you have to do is select the source then destination drives and pick automatic if you don't want to change anything.
 
Brilliant - So you choose the cloning option within the software - Choose target and destination and let Acronis do the rest. Sounds perfect.

You could bag yourself an extra Hard Drive if that is the case.

... and if you are lucky you might receive another F3 in return since the F1 is discontinued. RAID springs to mind! :D
 
I suspect you'll also have a better chance of an upgrade if you return it to Samsung. Maybe worth shooting OCUK a webnote and asking what you are likely to get back from them.
