Fake outrage..

By your existence you contribute to the nations GDP, sad but true as it seems we cannot exclude growth from the economy (or even create it).

And you are right, in the mid nineteen sixties, i remember my parents concluding that to be born british was a very lucky thing. After spending a decade living and working in Africa.

Yeah I contribute in a money sense.. But for me that isn't something to be proud of. That's just living. If I moved to the USA and paid tax there.. I wouldn't suddenly be proud of the USA

If the UK split in two.. I wouldn't suddenly not be proud of the half I wasn't in. It's just lines on a map.

That's an overly simplistic way of looking at a multifaceted issue.

It's easy enough indulge in some populist patriotism, but that can be a slippery slope to full on nationalism, bigotry and conflict. It's not just the obvious examples from WWII that demonstrate what can happen one group of people believe they are "better" and more entitled than others.

Anyway, how can someone really be proud of things that were nothing to do with them and happened before they existed? If your ancestors lived in (say) Germany for the last thousand years but your parents moved to England just before you were born, should you be proud of Germany or the UK?

That's without getting into the massive issue of history being written by the victors and the sanitised stories that become the publicly accepted version of historical truth. Should a person be proud of something that's a myth, or even an outright lie?

It does seem more logical to have pride in what you actually contribute and the causes you actively support.

Exactly this.
Its just arbitrary lines on a map. Would I be proud to be Russian right now? Or ashamed? No. Because I have no contribution to the war in Ukraine.

Where would I be proud of if my parents had me in France, but one was born in Germany and one on Spain and I moved to Norway?

I'm only proud of things I have significant influence in and over. I was proud of getting my bike to the top of snowdon for example. It was me. It was hard. I could have quit.
But I'm not proud of brexit, nor ashamed of it. I was 1 vote.

u know why they are rmoving him right. he doesnt have the same reputation in countries where most of our migration is coming from.
hes a genocidal freak to them

They are removing him because they change the theme every so often

It does seem to have potentially been "triggered" by comments that Churchill was elitist or other "things"

IMO its like stamps, its nice to see some change over time, although rare to see a real stamp nowadays.

inventors of things are way cooler

Sure inventors, people who made medical breakthroughs etc

There are plenty of themes and if the BOE changed the pictures often then they could cover many things and avoid the OMH shock horror of a change like this as people would be used to it
Its odd the notes are so "stodgy" when the coinage has new themes refreshed frequently.
I collect the silver coins and there have been boats/ships, war stuff like VE day anniversaries, bands, harry potter, railways etc over the last few years (although not all go into general circulation)

Seems like just another non issue that's being grabbed by the right as "woke" or whatever.

As you say, the theme changes all the time. And nature is essential for our survival too.

Storm in a tea cup all this. But people love a froth. Especially if it can be whipped up into anti immigration. And that's what it is.

Its being attacked as its
-change
-can be twisted into "anti British"
-- and anti British will be seen as pandering to immigrants = anti immigration

I bet if you asked many of these patriots would they fight for the UK? I bet they wouldn't.

Indeed Churchill has only been on the notes since 2017, its not like we are changing hundreds of years of history here with something completely unprecedented
The previous person was Elizabeth Fry and I bet 95%+ of Brits have no idea who she was

I does feel to me that its yet another attack on civil cohesion by those who seek to cause more disruption and division between the general populace.

How you can't be proud for the history that led you to these moments is beyond me.

People have fundamentally different interpretations of what pride means to them and what you can be proud of - many take it as something much more personal that requires personal involvement or action to feel like they can identify with taking pride in it.

For these people they don't really identify with feeling proud of something that they had no control over - they wouldn't feel proud of being British any more than they would feel proud of having brown hair for example or feeling proud that a local sports team won a competition.

That's not to say they're not thankful, appreciative or any number of other adjectives.

Some people have to discuss politics where they can as they've been banned from SC for having a view that goes against the OCUK overlords .
Nobody was ever removed from SC for having a view that differs from the mods.

Nobody.

Ever.

I need to say that twice, because it's absolutely true.

Suggesting other members have a mental illness, accusing members of various things, repeatedly taking threads off topic, yes, absolutely. Those sort of posts are the reasons people lose their SC access, but not for having a viewpoint that's different from the mods.

TIL. I remember her being on the note, but had no clue who she was.

Elizabeth Fry (née Gurney; 21 May 1780 – 12 October 1845), sometimes referred to as Betsy Fry, was an English prison reformer, social reformer, philanthropist and Quaker. Fry was a major driving force behind new legislation to improve the treatment of prisoners, especially female inmates, and as such has been called the "Angel of Prisons".
Well that explains the lack of outrage when she was removed, she was part of the tofu eating deep state wokerati!

'A fanatic is someone who [when presented with facts] won't change their mind, and can't change the topic' - Winston Churchill

A decent enough fella to put (or keep) on a banknote.

The real issue/debate here is that having historical figures on banknotes is now thought to be "divisive" - divisive to who exactly ? Have there been any complaints at all about this - has anyone had their feelings hurt ?

Who is pushing this agenda and why ?
The real question is why people who've never paid any attention to what is on the back side of a bank note are suddenly outraged when the design changes and the back side gets a new picture of something different, when they've never cared about it in the past.

It's absolute nonsense the way some people have got their knickers in a twist with some imagined slight to British history when it comes time to change the bank notes, as normal, and suddenly the note has to keep the same politician on it forever or it's hating British history, when the reality is that we've always changed the notes every few years.

"empty barrels make the most noise"

Generally the time-rich folks who wouldn't know what to do with a brain cell if it hit them in the face are also the ones who whine the loudest.

It's a bank note, as long as it's not got Hitler or some **** on it, nobody cares.

{[One could argue that the thread turned from opportunism to useful debate, albeit in the wrong section.

(I would however as a critical point of fact), warn that Gateshead is (par one or two places) an [awful place].}

Tell me Obi-Angus, you're my only hope.
You’ve got your bracketing all wrong here fella. Did you not read Angus’s opening post?

I mean, say what you like about the guy but at least we'd have had none of this HS2 nonsense with him sorting the trains. Am I right? Guys? Guuuuys?

That was Mussolini wasn't it? I don't care who's face is on my banknotes, if they are worth what they say they are that's good enough for me.

People looking for “woke leftism” to be out raged about when there wasn’t any.
