Fallout: New Vegas

Still haven't made it to the Strip yet, after 40hrs. Just completed vault 34 - has to be the most challanging place I've found yet (and the most confusing). Have an appreciation of RAD management now, but did find some great loot down there.

Was there any point to the reactor room?

Afaik there is two quests where you have to visit Vault 34. One for the the reactor room and one optional one for a machine manual in one of the first rooms on 3rd floor down.

But at least it's cleared now until when you have to go back there :)

I agree... Vault 34 was a poorly designed map, and very buggy. The door that "warps" you to another part of the same level was the real kicker. It's a pity, as I quite liked the "radioactive vault infested with ghouls" idea. It's easy to lose companions in Vault 34, as they warp into rooms that are locked and filled with enemies, and are unable to get back out.

As for the reactor room - that's part of another quest. You investigate what is causing radiation to leak into the water supply.

I was in Vault 34 last night, after an hour or so of frustration I gave it up and reloaded an older save meaning to come back when I have better rad protection! It was by far the biggest challenge I have seen in the game so far, not helped at all be a very confusing layout as said before.

I was then thining of doing a bit and then getting more radaway before going back in. Will the ghouls respawn?

oh, and for anyone that knows... should i kill house or not? i dont know what to do..

Without trying to spoil it too much, both cause you to work against the NCR and Legion, but killing House allows you to sort of take his place. Upto you which you decide, I saved and then killed him, did that storyline and then did the one where you work for him, both quite fun.

I don't think that the ghouls respawn.

Partway through the first "level" of vault34 is a med-box on the wall with 10+ radaway in it, as well as some rad-x and some stimpacks.

What you really need more than radaway is lots of rad-x. And a good radiation suit. If you've done the repcon test site mission (the ghouls into space mission) then you will have found a space-suit. The space suit has the same rad protection as an advanced radiation suit (+40 rad resistance), and has a reasonable damage threshold (DT=10). Using the space suit and rad-x you will only take a small fraction of a rad point every second (though it will still show up as +1 rad/s), and only in the really heavy radiation areas (the vault and the overseers office) will you see more than +1 rad.

Thanks for the reply, must have not been looking well during the Repcon explore as I only found a space helmet!

I found the medic box with the goodies in but it was soon after that when things started to fall apart with more different types of ghoul. Plus the old standby of unopenable doors which only opened to release a couple of nasty ghouls when you really didn't want any more!

I often wondered about the +1 RAD thing when I shouldn't be getting that much. I suppose it has to show something if you are getting something.

Finally have the game, I will start playing tonight.

What are your experiences, is VATS still a viable playing style and should I pick VATS related perks or should I look at other perks?

Depends really on how you like to play, short range weapons then yes VATs is very useful, but for snipers and other long range shooters it is a waste imho.

My first play through was as a packrat sniper, so I didn't get any Vat perks, just ones that allowed me to carry more and fast travel overburdened as well as improve my criticals.

Anyone have an issue with vats seriously lowering frame rates, say 1-3fps. Didn't have the same problem in fallout 3, but with new vegas the game becomes almost unplayable once I've entered vats. After I've left vats I have to wait for 15 seconds or so for it to return to normal?

edit: unchecking HDR seems to have sorted it.

VATS is still very useful, but not nearly as essential as it was in Fallout 3. Long range non-VATS combat is now very effective as well.

VATS perks / traits are useful, although perks are rarer than fallout 3 (one perk for every two levels rather than every level), so you will need to choose carefully.

FYI, it's an issue with the game running out of VRAM. I have the same on my triple-screen (7680*1600) setup, when I enable any kind of AA and try to use VATS. Without AA I can run just fine. Monitoring GPU memory usage in Afterburner shows that I'm reaching the 1.5Gb memory limit of my cards in these cases.

Removing HDR will reduce memory use certainly. You could also try reducing / disabling AA.

this is a good mod to have, tried it last night and its sweet, no more shooting someone a dozen times in the face :)

I LOVE this mod, been running it for a while now, it makes playing a sneak focused build so much more rewarded and honestly getting a perfect head shot only to find it removed about a 1/4 of the enemies health got a little dull. What's great is that it takes into account if the target is wearing head armour, also it doesn't work on some enemies, robots, death claws, stuff like that.

Anyone who hasn't already check out this guy's weapon retextures, they are absolutely stunning.

yeha gives the game a touch of realism i think :)

Wow, I am hooked straight away.

Started the game, after the character creation went on a long walk to get the intelligence implant and it was great, killed a few guys, looted some weapons from them, found Veronica who joined me without trouble and reached Freeside :)

What is a good gun I can get early on?
Something like a M4 or another machinegun.

It's hard to find good weapons early on... The gun runners don't start selling the really good stuff until you reach level 12, 14 or 16. You can probably find a 9mm or perhaps 10mm SMG though... Make sure you buy ammo for it from every trader you find as ammo is fairly hard to come by and the SMGs will really chew through it!

Okay, I have a 9mm pistol which works fairly good, I also looted a shotgun and rifle from dead people that were fighting but I don't remember the names.

It is annoying though that I have some guns but hardly any ammo for them.

I found a gun runner near Freeside, is that the best way to get ammo?
