Familiarity with the mod team?

Actually a drink up at Christmas with the mods sounds great.. at the end there should be a special treat.

All the mods drag out the one mod that decided to turn the forum green on a night out so we can throw things at them.

One mod?

I'm not sayin nuffin!

I'm a member of a few other forums, a couple of them are much larger than OcUK and the rest are far smaller.

It occurred to me the other day that I have no idea who any of the moderators and administrators are on the other forums. I looked on a couple to see if I could find out who they were but it really wasn't obvious. I find this a bit odd and wonder why they do that. I was approached a few months ago to be a moderator on one of the larger ones but that approach was from a generic account, not an actual user account. I use the report function a fair bit there and the responses to reports (whether accepted or not) are always a standard reply with no indication who's dealt with it.

We're very open here about who's an Underboss, Don or Commisario. The entire team is listed in the forum rules and we don't hide. It's just how we've always done it.

What do you think, is it better to be open the way we are or to keep that sort of thing quiet like a lot of other forums?

Of the forums i've been on OCUK seems to be one of the "open" about moderators, there are some where it's nearly impossible to find out who they are, or they simply don't say they just have things like "forum moderator" as an account, some didn't necessarily hide it, but didn't really say outright but you learned fairly fast, and others like here are quite open about it (Stratics for example) and have the moderators posting and moderating using their one account.

I like the openness and transparency, as well as having the go contact points if required. Plus you can flaunt your fancy invite only titles

So the 2 others forums I am familiar with (one of which no longer exists) the Mods have clearly labelled accounts, and while they don't list who all the mods on one page are I've always had the feeling that if I asked they would probably tell me.
Generally the mods do engage with the community.

Interestingly the other forum that is still around have started publishing posts informing users that user xyz has been banned, stating the reason and duration.

It's a double edged sword, you get additional attention both negative and positive purely due to the perception of authority, even if it's not even close to being wielded at the time. Not everyone handles this well, some get inside their own heads a bit and see authority challenges every time someone disagrees.

I would like this forum to have a post graveyard, where if you wish you can choose to be an adult and not find offense in menial words on an internet forum so you can then have a chuckle to yourself for the reason why posters are banned

This other forum, they have a feature were a post can be hidden from public view but a signed in user can unhide it for themselves. It has been a while since I've seen it so I could be misremembering.

That seems like a good idea, quite often on here ppl ask why someone was banned.
They could have a note when you hover over someone username stating the reason why.

I see that increasingly on larger company forums like game publishers, etc. which have a mix of community volunteers and staff, though increasingly those kind of companies seem to be retiring forums and moving to Discord lately.

I've fallen foul of the forum rules a number of times but I think the balance is about right. The private section (where you can post a query for the Dons to see) is a great little addition to the open-forum threads like this one.

The only thing I can think of to add to this is maybe make a list in the sticky rules thread on why certain things are banned. E.g. Jesus.jpg is banned but I'm not sure why, and also we can't mention that Welsh town beginning with an R but again I'm not sure why. So if that could be added into the sticky, then I think that will save from the readership asking about this. There is also "that brown bear". I think I know what the sticky meant regarding that but again a confirmation would clear it up for the readership.

It’s basically because people were over using them in almost every thread. It grew tiresome, so putting a blanket ban on them was the only solution.

It's all really just through overuse, which causes a downward trend in overall discourse. Also some such as jesus.jpg just made people very very mad if I recall, even if "cool story bro" is technically the same thing. Some of these kinds of things remain, but they tend to be tolerated as they're not yet overused (subjective, I appreciate) and are to my knowledge more home grown, for example boxing stance, letterbox, etc.

The specific banning of Rhyl is due to people recommending it any time anyone asked a question to which the answer should (or even could) be a location. Got tiresome, got in the bin.

Errrrrm the jury in this forum (which is definitely a democracy not an autocratic dysutopia) have unanimously agreed to let me off on technicality due to fair use.

:edit: Or you're all super woke lefties/power tripping literal Nazis and i've spent thousands with the shop, let's see what they think about this etc etc.

Nexus Mods has a subforum like that where they list bans and why for transparencies' sake which isn't a bad idea. Also its fun to grab some popcorn and read all the reasons for the bans its quite entertaining the majority are teenage edgelords who think they're being clever but infact just manage to look like idiots. The rest are spammers salted with the odd bigot. (At least this place is free from kids mouthing off and the ones that do don't last long)
