Familiarity with the mod team?

What do you think, is it better to be open the way we are or to keep that sort of thing quiet like a lot of other forums?

For this forum where things can sometimes be in a grey area I think it's better to keep things open... like a moderator can post in a thread and point out that it's getting too heated or that it needs to be back on topic and further posts deleted etc.. that's all discretionary stuff and sometimes no further action required (other times well, there was a warning) it's useful to see a post from a mod in that case. (unless there were a generic placeholder mod account that could post a similar message).

In the case of anonymous moderation, I think that's perhaps for other types of forums, maybe better where there is either less moderation and/or there are just basic rules with less discretion*... in that sort of case it's a bit more robotic/mundane and may as well just take the case of stuff disappearing (obvious spam) and/or stuff being edited "by a moderator" for X obvious rule breach. One example might be the imageboards with fewer rules/more anarchy and threads that don't last long, in that case there are so many users and they're anonymous too that a large team of anonymous moderators performing basic tasks and adhering to a fixed rule set with limited (if any discretion) perhaps makes more sense.

I guess another example could be members' market, quite rigid rules and perhaps less room for discretion... it's a bit more procedure-oriented and needs to be for good reasons.

Mods being open, approachable, visible and also posting is the best thing

On the banned posters point, Something Awful lets you see each poster's rap sheet with moderateror comments explaining why idiots got probes or banned and it is almost always hilarious/terrifying.

Nexus Mods has a subforum like that where they list bans and why for transparencies' sake which isn't a bad idea. Also its fun to grab some popcorn and read all the reasons for the bans its quite entertaining the majority are teenage edgelords who think they're being clever but infact just manage to look like idiots. The rest are spammers salted with the odd bigot. (At least this place is free from kids mouthing off and the ones that do don't last long)
I think shadow banning would be a funny way to deal with people, don't tell them they're banned, let them keep on posting, but their posts are invisible to everybody, so you just end up wondering why nobody talks to you

Imagine being a mod, committing your entire internet persona to being a decent person and not calling a spade a spade, no thanks. I take my hat off to the chaps and chappettes who keep this place in check, we really do have some unruly customers.

Heh.

I wanted to become a mod once so just started my own forum and made all the rules myself. It's just past its 10 year anniversary so something must be right. I only ban bots though, when people join for self promotion or are dicks to each other we just force them to wear embarrassing sigs and avatars for a week so everyone knows they were a tit.

Magnolia for mod?

Only if this becomes his avatar.
