Far Cry 3 Thread

Reading through this thread is making me smile at how simple it used to be to play a game back in the Quake 2/Half life days.. Buy a big box with game on CD in it.. install from CD and play..

Very true, and they try to sell the instant download as covenient. Not seen one person posting about running down to Game, bought a copy and ran hope and installed it like in the good old days :).

Steam seems to be pretty painless. I prefer the DVD's but can't beat the Steam sales. Any full price games I'd rather buy the disk personally.
Uplay seem to now be charging £5 more than you can get the disk for - £34.99 vs £29.99 for one version unless you can get some kind of special offer.

The number one way to get high FPS is to switch to Direct X 9 mode. It won't be as pretty, but it'll work.

The following apply to DX11 mode:

  • A big performance hit: Post FX. Set it to Medium and you'll see big gains and only lose a bit of lens flare.
  • Shadows have a huge effect on performance. I've now got mine on Medium and everything else on Very High, and am getting a steady 60fps.
  • Switch to SSAO from HBAO. You can't really see the difference and performance is much improved.
  • Set GPU Max Buffered Frames to 5.
  • Set v-sync off (limit frame rate to 58fps on a 60hz monitor to avoid tearing).
  • If you're on Nvidia, install these drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win8-wi...ta-driver.html
  • Set Alpha to Coverage to Standard or Off - I don't notice much difference.
  • Switch MSAA off and force FXAA in the control panel - looks as good as 2x without the performance hit.

AMD BETA DRIVERS "Includes single GPU performance updates for Far Cry 3"

Thanks for the tips re. graphics.

I've done all of that and the game does look pretty good. But, I have a couple of noob questions:
- how do I limit framerate to 58fps for my 60hz monitor?
- how do I force fxaa in the control panel?

I suspect those comments relate to NVidia cards, but can I do something similar with my 7870?

I just statrted playing, now nothing really makes me jump in films/games etc..
I was swimming along about to dive down to get a blue flower from underwater and as i dove down a massive croc attacked me lol i litterally jumped out my skin!! really didnt expect it lol never played the first 2.

Finally got my Order Confirmation email only 4 days after purchasing

Now another 4 days for the CD key? I've downloaded it using the link about 15 pages back (the one to Ubisoft Download Manager).

On the Orders page on the Ubishop site it says Order Complete but there's not even a download link here so I'm not sure how they think I'm going to download the game had it not been for the link provided here to the DM.

Once you open up a few areas after clearing outposts this game really comes in to its own. There seem to be a fair few side quests. I still really don't like the restrictive nature of the quests, but that is just the way it is.

Does anyone know what the 'story quests' are? ...because it says I have done 0/14.

PS. The bow is quality!

So far, some bits enjoyable, theres something odd about seemingly having all the weapons available very very quickly, too easy to get money or, I dunno. Then again as you get them free you feel a bit stupid buying them so I'm mostly spending money on accessories for weapons I have.

A new wallet, really, crafting a new wallet to hold more money? I'm also getting just a teeny bit pee'd off with the Far Cry 2 esque patrols, get spotted, kill two guys who get out of car, loot them, before I've even finished looting another patrol car comes up and I kill them, loot and before I've finished looting another car has shown up.... rinse repeat.

Why do they think gameplay = doing the same thing over and over, the constant patrols in FC2 are what led to me not finishing it, actually the checkpoints I think, been so long since I played it. Travelling off road its basically not a problem but getting any distance via car is irritatingly tiresome in terms of hitting patrol after patrol. Isn't that basically the number one problem everyone had with the first game.... and they've kept it in the second game?

The missions I've done so far have been fairly varied feel to the camps/attacks and going after animals is quite good, a quite dynamic world.

Also was attacked by a croc, in almost certainly the same spot, looks pretty in general, the feel of the world is quite nice.

I prefer a silenced sniper with a upgraded scope for further sniping. So much satisfaction from it! Not really given the bow a chance yet. But don't see the point if I'm using a sniper?

You get the arrow back when you loot or run over the body, meaning if you don't miss much, unlimited ammo... ish. Also it seems to one hit kill for me no matter where they are hit, only just got a sniper free myself so not sure but assuming if its not a head shot its not a kill. So the bow is more powerful, but harder to aim, ammo/money doesn't seem to be a particularly big issue yet, though I've not even seen how much sniper ammo I have... so maybe it is.

The bow is the best weapon in this game by far! I haven't used a gun for more than like 5-10 minutes :p

Once you get good with it, you really feel like Rambo/green arrow  :D :p

EDIT:

As said above, you get your arrows back when you go over to where it landed/impaled, one hit kill from pretty much any distance.

I will give it a shot later then :) Maybe it will be a mid range weapon for me. As I often snipe from the furthest distance possible haha.

I started using the sniper rifle. but it was far too loud, and as DM said, you will pretty much be in a constant cycle of enemies if you attract too much attention.

The poker is quite well done. The biggest disappointment by far is the UI, in particular the map for me. The FC2 ingame map was brilliant! ...that kind of set-up would suit the game so much more(pull out an actual map to look at)

A friend of mine bought it from that Russian Website.

He reckons the game is in Russian and he cannot see how to change it to English.

Any suggestions guys? ;)

I agree about the UI, I am using a controller for this though so I can sit back and play it on the big screen with all the PC goodness. Have to say it, the menu works MUCH better with a controller.

But the map is still ****. However, tiny disappointment compared to the game its self!
